  1. Glad to see the Twins didn't totally waste the men on base. Now 4-1, entering the bottom of the fourth. CBU.
  2. Forcing it when it's just not there is the way to the doghouse. But putting the other team in the position of having to make the perfect play? Most often that's just good baseball.
  3. Approves: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JVd0ntnU4B4/UZCi-EapfnI/AAAAAAAAB8o/vOZhOsnYtEM/s320/grinds+my+gears.jpg You hit on my peeve about shaving cream, and nothing else is presently coming to mind. Maybe later on I'll think of a gear being ground.
  4. Saturday's game starting time moved up to accommodate national TV. The Twins matter!
  5. Sweet called third strike for Milone to end the inning.
  6. Prompted me to watch the entire at-bat again on YouTube tonight. Seven minutes of riveting baseball - a high level of play on nearly every pitch, including a snap throw from catcher to first (shades of Laudner in 87). I hated the Dodgers then, still basically do, but what a game, what an outcome.

  8. Yesterday late in the game thread, a question arose about whether a player could have more than 3 assists in an inning. We concluded the answer was clearly Yes, because of the way the rule is constructed (you get credit for an assist even if a subsequent error results in no out being recorded). But I couldn't quickly locate any documented instances. Well, SABR colleagues to the rescue. Here are three such instances: 4 for second base Jason Kipnis CLE 6/22/2014 (5th inning) http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CLE/CLE201406220.shtml 4 for third base Craig Grebeck White Sox, 5/2/1995 (5th inning); http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/TOR/TOR199505020.shtml 4 for shortstop Juan Uribe COL, 5/21 2002 (4th inning) http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/COL/COL200205210.shtml
  9. On the contrary. Earth is and always shall be an Exceptional planet. A shining planet on a hill, and exempt from historical forces that have affected other planets. Love it or leave it!
  10. According to Ashbury's Other Law ("I take what I want") I shall steal that corollary as my very own.
  11. Ashbury's Law of Teh Internets: Everybody posts, nobody reads.
  12. Someone should think to dig some canals to get this water distributed usefully.
  13. Orthogonality being completely out of the question most days, I presume.
  14. I dunno. Germany Schaefer hit 48 triples in his career, yet never achieved the feat. If he couldn't, hard to think of who else could.
  15. You and I, of course, being the transcendental exceptions.
  16. I know it's not done with bad intention, but this is one classic form of "cherry picking" of statistics, to make the very best possible case for one player but for no other (or at most, few others). A good player whose career happened to start just a little after 1993 will not tally up as many games during this span. Derek Jeter played in only 936 games, versus Meares's 982. A good player whose career happened to end just a little before 2001 will not run up his numbers, either. Alan Trammel played only 328. And Honus Wagner played 0, the bum. It's a very specific span that coincides with the one player's career. And if he only ranks 11th in this manner, at any given point within this time span he likely ranked much much lower among his peers. Side note, I don't have any particular quarrel with using games-played as a metric, among many that could be chosen. No bad player is ever going to get put in the lineup by a manager, for a long enough span of time.
  17. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyLiiI_VocQ Team chemistry is a tricky thing.
  18. Every single extremist believes him or herself to be the rational one in the discussion.
  19. "Pleased to meet you too, Mr Stohs. Let's plan to never chat again, OK?"
  20. It's hard for me to rank the various aspects of managing - several are of the nature "if you mess this up, it doesn't matter how great you are at the rest of it." Keeping a good clubhouse, year after year, is one of these.
  21. Next best thing, though... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbbYx_FqtHU
  22. Cool side note: in a rundown, you can get an assist on your own putout!
  23. OK, OK, we don't all have the rules memorized word-for-word. Me included. Here is the wording. (I had a little trouble with the PDF, so I just typed it by hand, hopefully without too many tpyoes.) The official scorer shall credit an assist to each fielder who throws or deflects a batted or thrown ball in such a way that a putout results, or would have resulted except for a subsequent error by any fielder. Only one assist and no more shall be credited to each fielder who throws or deflects the ball in a run-down play that results in a putout, or would have resulted in a putout, except for a subsequent error; ... So, I would have guessed wrong. I'd have said that only one assist would be credited no matter how long the run-down. Aside from putouts and assists, the official scorecard will show the exact sequence of throws, e.g. 9-3-4-1-3-1-4-2, or whatever. There's more, so have a look if you want more of this good stuff. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2015/official_baseball_rules.pdf
  24. Official MLB Rule 9.10(a)(1) covers this adequately, don't you think?
  25. No. Unanimity is pretty rare.
