  1. Wow. He wrote that nicely. Guess he's found the right job to be in. His reasons echo mine when I retired, but I didn't expect that from a 24 year old. A very surprising choice but I can see why, now that he's explained.
  2. Sounds like a technique that would make a catcher a little vulnerable to the passed ball. And when I looked, sure enough, he led the league in passed balls with 12. In 2014. Whereas this season he had only 1. Somehow he's found the magic combination.
  3. Give me one too, but I don't think guys with an ERA of 1.00 are available.
  4. Sounds almost as if TR is helping ghost-write for you today.
  5. A useful link I like to keep bookmarked: http://www.forbes.com/mlb-valuations/list/ Sortable by franchise value, revenue, operating income.
  6. When in doubt, insert "IMO" anyplace you see a statement you think is a little too strong. Makes the site much more readable, for me at least.
  7. Agreed. The AFL is among the last places I care about official stats; I want to know what my guys did against live (and advanced) competition, and that's what that was. Particularly as it was all good news.
  8. Agreed on the #1 goal, and since the word "classic" is vague at best, it's not worth getting too worked up over - but for me a classic leadoff hitter does include speed, because you can aim for more than just one goal in a player for that slot.
  9. For those who believe the process is more important than the outcome, the rebuttal still stands.
  10. Especially because this particular toolshed has room for exactly 25 tools, about 12-13 of which can be devoted directly to this part of the overall project. Of course everybody else has 25-tool toolsheds as well, somewhat accounting for the low/nonexistent bid price on eBay for your unwanted extras. / what would be cool are some 25-tool players, instead of just the traditional 5-tool. Imagine their potential. Hit, hit for power, do the dizzy bat race, sell hot dogs, negotiate trades...
  11. At least three of the bullet items he listed are negatively impacted if you have a losing team. The other three are part of building a winning team. Nobody is forgetting about winning games. There is disagreement on the marginal cost of improving the odds of winning a World Series, given that 29 other teams to varying degrees are also trying and no amount of investment can insure a ring.
  12. I believe editing is possible for the first hour after posting.
  13. I missed a step here. Obviously, though, what comes next is 4) Profit! / I know, I know, you mean to trade Gibson, right?
  14. We'll find out, as Duensing hits free agency this winter.
  15. That was meant to be me. Pink's always been a flattering color for my complexion.
  16. Yeah, it was a disguised spelling flame. Shoot me.
  17. She may get to reprise that performance repeatedly, after the convention. Bernie has put the S-word in play for the Democrats, in a way that the Republicans tried but never succeeded in doing on their own, despite attempts to pin the word on Obama. If I were the Republicans every ad on TV would find a way to include the word, suggesting for example that her administration will be filled with socialist also-rans who couldn't find their way in via the front door through elective office in order to take away your hard-won* freedoms. The socialist wing of the Democratic party has now united behind Hillary. Etc. Socialists. Democrats. Socialists. Democrats. Freedom. It's very hard to fight a constant drumbeat with measured answers. Remember how John Kerry's military service somehow became a negative for him? * While you lie on the couch watching the ad
  18. Better than the other interpretation of the review, which would be that you highly recommend taking Mrs Chief to the show.
  19. The survey mechanism itself worked fine. You have a misspelled word in the instructions, in case you are looking for that kind of feedback. Who is Gregg Bird? baseball-reference.com comes up empty.
  20. I have yet to hear how Democrats plan to deal with the onslaught of Republican ads that will start *before* the Democratic convention, if Bernie looks like the favorite to win the nomination, that hammer the phrase "Socialist Bernie Sanders wants to...". Indeed if he gets a lot of convention votes, the ads will tar Hillary (or whoever) with things like "Socialist Democrats who now throw their support to Clinton want to..." Bernie's responses here on the show represent the start of a very long education process, that won't nearly have time to complete a year from now. People will hear individual points, but still hold the general view that "Socialism doesn't work". The Republicans will make it Socialism vs. Freedom, and it will work.
  21. OK so far... Hey, come on! Spoiler alert, please. Now I'm going to go into this movie expecting a good time. Ruins it for me. Sheesh.
  22. .280 is a fine result in real-world baseball. I was talking about a rookie hypothetically being disrespected and thrown nothing but pitches over the plate, fastballs in fact. You would think the league would have a lot more .300 hitters if that was the style, and I believe Polanco in particular would take advantage. That was all I was saying. And Ben has in the meantime clarified a bit, so I was hitting at somewhat of a strawman it turns out, although he and I continue to differ on what Polanco's ceiling looks like at age 21.
  23. If you think .280 would be the outcome of non stop fastballs to him, then your opinion of Polanco's hit tool isn't very high after all. Nick Punto or (heaven help us) Drew Butera might even achieve that. I do agree with your scenario if .280 is all he can muster. If instead it's more like a professional hitter and is .350 (fastballs only, remember), then the pitchers will adjust, the batter will adjust, and we'll be back to a more interesting mix of walks. Add in some scouts' projection of decent power, and the pitchers have to adjust some more, and, well, there ya go. I don't want Polanco force-fed at the MLB level in 2016. But if he forces his way up from AAA, mid-season, or waits until 2017, I think he can be pretty good. The jury is still (a little bit) out on whether he can improve his throwing to keep a SS job, with probably a majority opinion by now that he can't, but he might arrive just in time to replace a fading or (one would hope) traded Dozier at second.
  24. Also, didn't Back To The Future 2 predict a 2015 Cubs world series sweep? / over Miami, which is pretty long-odds at this point. / or at any point, come to think of it
