  1. The day needs to get back to its roots. Strike a little fear into shoppers' hearts and they won't be mobbing the malls quite so much, innit?
  2. Well, I like Kepler about as much as anyone does, but #1 is too high. When I look at stats, every player is entitled to one out-of-sight good year, and one shrug-your-shoulders bad year, each of which I want to reduce in importance to the overall picture I'm forming of his chances as he moves up in difficulty of opponents faced, and in the fullness of time Kepler's 2015 is likely to look very much like the former. A stats-only based approach is likely to weight the most recent season heavily, so I suppose I'm not surprised to see him fare well in this listing. But #1? Phew, that's pretty rare air up there.
  3. That was kind of the theme of his remarks on Saturday, too.
  4. Not Stanford. I met my wife there so I'll always root for them. But this year's team would have only a "puncher's chance" against a top team, as their defense is so deficient. And against a better defense than Notre Dame's, their chance of landing enough killing blows would be very small.
  5. I'm only quoting Terry Ryan. And I'm more concerned about # 260 lbs hitting a center fielder or landing on one.
  6. I would just add that if there is any time pressure, it is on the player and not the team. The Twins get their posting fee back if negotiations fall through, and can apply the money to some different purpose, while the player loses his chance for an 8-figure contract for another 12 months.
  7. Not sure where to put this (or even if it's worth putting anywhere). We need a "For What It's Worth" department here. Yesterday at the Rhode Island chapter meeting of SABR, area scout Steve Payne of the Marlins was a guest speaker. Afterward I got a chance to chat with him and I mentioned I was a Twins fan. "Great organization to work for" was his response. I took it to mean from his perspective as a scout. He didn't have to say that, so I take it to be a genuine opinion from a knowledgeable outsider looking in. Maybe you can interpret it negatively ("country club atmosphere"?) but I don't.
  8. I don't see how Ryan will be able to entice anyone who is good to sign a one year deal with a likelihood of being flipped. And at this stage of the rebuild I'm not ready anymore for AAAA placeholders like Sugar Shane.
  9. There is a stat, Win Probability Added, that attempts to factor in the leverage of each game situation, and the fractional credit thus gained is added up over the entire season. The illustrious Gilmartin earned a 2015 season total of negative 0.4 wins. Good catch. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYM/2015-pitching.shtml
  10. Plus cash. Don't forget the cash. 1999 was when cash was paramount to the Twins. They gambled and took the guy the Marlins wanted and made 'em pay, plus getting a usable spare part in return.
  11. If we send just to your teachers, maybe you can apply for a refund.
  12. As is the meme, I suppose. Swap the order on that one, please.
  13. This election season is still young, but 1968 is a pretty high bar to exceed. We'll have to consult with Chief if we want insights on 1860. As you said, *your* lifetime.
  14. The thing that bugs me about Dean is that he spent his age-26 year at AAA, yet wasn't deemed by the Twins worthy of a September look-see in mopup duty, which would only have cost them the unusable Aaron Thompson being dropped from the 40-man (I think), but now they don't want him snapped up by some other team.
  15. Soon as I scrolled down and saw "Hard-Throwing Relievers With Control Trouble" I said, here we are.
  16. Papa Jack, AKA Poppa Up? He was hitting coach for the Sox at the time? I don't remember that - I don't even remember forgetting it. He's kind of an ironic guru for a power hitter. He did have that 56 homer season - oh wait that was his 10 year career.
  17. Molitor did try Sano in the 3rd spot, and was rewarded with a .587 OPS. Anybody else he might have tried, taking their full season stats at face value, among those with enough PA to qualify, would have raised our ranking in the above list to... next to last. Escobar at .754. There just weren't enough good options to cause Molitor's hand to be forced. One can argue that Sano should have been moved up from 4th to 3rd more often. Not a game changer. The problem was the roster itself. This is not yet a good hitting team.
  18. Just a rip-off of Archer.
  19. Yeah, catching and multiple stints on the DL for concussions are such a favorite combo for the Twins FO.
  20. Hicks was not traded for AAA depth. Unless and until Park is signed, we won't know if any further trades that depend on this event, such as Plouffe, are in the offing. While relief pitching is what's rumored for Plouffe, a third string decent/veteran catcher could also be involved.
  21. It may be true that major league pitchers don't serve up fat pitches very often, but when Park sees one he seems to know what to do with it.
  22. Yeah, what threw me off was that the cartoonist was sloppy and made the two symbols look the same.
  23. There is an active thread on Fernandez in TD's Other Baseball forum.
