  1. If it appears anywhere on the list of things you want, you have it ranked too high.
  2. Moderator note: I amended the title while moving the thread over to the Twins forum area.
  3. I'll pretend it's the day after tomorrow and skip the holiday.
  4. The human brain, and especially hand-eye coordination, already is a miracle. He suffered that concussion a year ago, and it's at least a mystery whether it has contributed to slightly degraded vision at the plate, and whether it will mend any further on its own given time. Healing's another kind of miracle. I don't think anybody has questioned Buxton's work ethic. So if repetition was the solution, the problem would already be solved. My prescription for the young fella is to relax this winter, maybe play a lot of video games to unwind, keep the mind off of sliders and curveballs, go fishing and let the batteries recharge, and then come to camp and see what happens. I think I read somewhere that there's a correlation between playing baseball and being good at certain video games, so my prescription is only partly tongue in cheek.
  5. I don't think he has to do anything miraculous, conversely the position shouldn't be just handed to him. What it should come down to next Spring is not his numbers, but the eyeball test: is he laying off the breaking pitches in the dirt, and is he giving a good whack to pitches in his zone? Pitch recognition was THE problem, even against AA pitchers last spring, and until that's not the problem or he has no more minor league options he should spend time in AAA correcting it. And because CF is a crucial position on any team, the roster will look like a jumble until a more viable Plan B is in place.
  6. A typical team, yes. But this is Oakland. I don't know what the new TV money does for their budget, but the past couple of seasons their major league player expenses have been in the neighborhood of $90M. Maybe they are pocketing huge profits, but I think that one is just a market that's highly constrained financially.
  7. What is all this fuss I hear about the Twins giving Casey Fien a Qualifying Offer? http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/video/video.snl.com/SNL_0007_13_Update_2_Emily_Latella.png
  8. It's in the article. Cubs are one of the three teams listed as having interest.
  9. Actually I believe that is the dilemma with Sano and third base: he's quite good at some things requiring athleticism. In my SSS of watching him, I've seen very fine work when coming in fast on a slow roller and getting the throw off with some mustard on it despite the awkward throwing position. It's more mundane third base issues like tracking foul popups and dealing with hard smashes toward him that I've seen trouble with - plays we've come (after time) to expect Plouffe to make. And those things seem correctable. The question for the GM and on-field staff is whether they can live with the current below-par performance while he learns. If you believe the talk about the outfield, the answer apparently is no for the time being. But I think it to be a close decision and they are probably on the fence about it - a good trade offer for Plouffe could swing the decision the other way, for instance.
  10. The Sicily Tysons, as I recall.
  11. I Don't Give A Darn what you were thinking.
  12. I have no idea what the exact number. But the guy is fit.
  13. Wow, somebody's mind got changed on an issue? This never would have happened, on Facebook.
  14. I have seen Sano have difficulty tracking down a foul popup at third. The two skills aren't identical but I would think there's some overlap. I don't expect him to be better at it in the outfield than at third. The working theory the team's apparently going with is that it will hurt the team less in the outfield than at third, while not relegating him to DH at such a young age and with first base still occupado.
  15. What's blocking Sano at third is Sano's current defense at the position. By my own eye, and apparently by the on-field staff as well if they would consider moving the guy to the outfield.
  16. What you are describing are the Three True Outcomes. http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Three_True_Outcomes I think All Or Nothing batters overlap this, but it usually implies low batting average and high home run power. I think you could find cases on either side of the walk spectrum, and the case of doubles power would be a gray area. But even a guy like Rob Deer had more singles in his career than home runs - it would be tough to find a pro player who truly was all or nothing.
  17. I didn't realize the Daily News was a leftist rag.
  18. If that's the deciding factor then I'd be content having him sitting on some other team's AAA roster.
  19. A meaningful insight. What bothers me is that by this view, for a marginal reliever like Fien, dollars are a scarcer resource in the team's eyes than spots on the 25 man roster. It's easy for me to tell other people how to spend their money, of course. But if they save $1M by signing Fien for $1.5M instead of $2.5M, does that really tip the balance toward assigning him that spot on the roster? For a team that wants to contend in 2016, it seems to me that finding room for good players is the constraint that limits them. I can't believe that applying the $1M to another purpose is what's going to put them over the top. For me, at this stage, if Fien isn't good enough to be on the team at $2.5M, he isn't good enough even at $0.
  20. The author ends the article discussing Plouffe's chances of being re-signed for 2018, without even mentioning the looming presence of Miguel Sano by name. Instead he chalks up Plouffe's likely departure to a continued "anonymous strategy" by the team. I don't get it.
  21. Utility is a good way to look at him for 2016, and it will let him establish whether he should be more, or less, going forward.
  22. For the record, the moderation team has taken, and will continue to take, a dim view at attempts at jokes in this vein.
  23. The more I read this discussion, the more surprised I'll be if Revere is non-tendered. Somebody put him on a list, discussion ensues.
  24. Bit of trivia re: Joe Benson: He was my Adopt-A-Prospect in 2013. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/5627-joe-benson/ I don't know whether to call dibs on him now for 2016, or encourage someone else to claim him as their adoptee in hopes of bringing better luck.
  25. I'm a little bored with the farewell tours. I'm a little bored with the outrage too, since it's easy enough ignore the farewell tours.
