  1. This game has been a showcase for the two guys (Pelfrey and Burton) that should be pitching in the independent leagues right now. Burton is 10 for 10 (10 appearances, 10 runs allowed) ...
  2. After a while, you run out of things to say about how bad Pelfrey has pitched this year.
  3. . . . it's like reading a terrible book and hoping it will get better.
  4. Is there some strange Target Field magic this season in which opposing teams throw the ball all over the field? Keep an eye out for Christopher Lloyd in an umpire uniform (and wings).
  5. now if Donny Baseball would just cut those sideburns... http://37.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m1jruk7Pyf1qg0rnuo1_500.png
  6. Right - Pelfrey is not the guy the fans or the Twins wanted him to be - the point I was getting at is that kind of production (roughly 200 innings of league average pitching) is the reason the Twins offered that contract - their gamble was that Pelfrey could reach that level of production after Tommy John and the encouraging starts at the end of last year, but this month at least it doesn't seem to be the case. Someone else mentioned that he had a slow April last year as well - is that a career long trend, or just last year? If he gets better as the season goes on, does it change anything?
  7. I think the ceiling for a guy like Pelfrey would be a season like a poor-man's Carl Pavano, Kenny Rogers, or Rick Reed - lots of innings, with an ERA at or slightly above league average. The fear is that what you get is more like Sidney Ponson, Livan Hernandez, etc. etc. you know the guys I mean. Hope he gets on track today.
  8. Yeah - based on the month of April, I expect that the Twins can hang in there with all of those teams. It would not shock me if they find a way to stay above .500 in May, I just think they will have a tough time doing so.
  9. The May schedule has 2 more vs. Dodgers 3 vs. Baltimore 4 at Cleveland 3 at Detroit 3 v. Boston 3 v. Seattle 2 at San Diego 3 at San Fran 4 v. Texas and finish the month with 2 at Yankee Stadium (a 3 game series). Since there's 29 games there, I will say it will not be a push. I'll say under, because I think they'll have trouble with LAD, BAL, BOS, NYY, and Texas. I don't think they'll get swept by any of those teams, but I do think they'll have trouble winning series against those 5. I predict they'll win 10 or more games, though.
  10. It seems like Gardy wants Tonkin to pitch when the Twins are doing a mid-inning pitching change. 6 of his 9 appearances so far this year have come with runners on base. He's been used in higher leverage situations this past month than he ever has before. Compare him to Burton, who has the same number of appearances, but has yet to enter the game this season with a runner on base. Burton has managed to allow more runners to score (9) even if you charge all of Tonkin's inherited runs allowed to Tonkin's line. I think the numbers should look better as the season progresses. Tonkin has been in some unenviable situations so far and has done ok. Duensing and Swarzak both have a better strand rate so far, but I think Tonkin has shown that he handles being thrown into the fire about as well as anyone in the bullpen. Last night he only faced two batters because the following inning Gardy wanted a lefty-lefty matchup to start (Duensing v. Carl Crawford). If a righty was up first, Gardy may have elected to leave Tonkin in longer.
  11. It's more about my personal comfort in my seat at TF that I am anxious for the temperatures to rise, though I do see that I implied in my last comment there's a link between weather and performance. It's not really a supportable argument, I agree, I don't mean to suggest that warmer weather will improve the pitching at all.
  12. For some reason no one has mentioned that this is also the return of Drew Butera . . . With the Doubleheader on Thursday, I'm guessing he's going to see some action either tonight or tomorrow.
  13. When I first saw that Kris Johnson was getting a start I wondered if Pelfrey was going to have his turn skipped, but I think it makes sense to run him out there at least couple more times before calling it a failed experiment to extend his contract. I Can't wait for warmer temperatures at Target Field. The weather has been awful, and may have a little something to do with the rotation's slow start. Then again, Pelfrey's performance so far has seemingly had more to do with diminished velocity and poor command.
  14. So, Gibson tonight (if the weather lets up) Pelfrey for the 1st game Tomorrow Kris Johnson for the 2nd Game Tomorrow Ricky Nolasco on Friday Looks like Dodgers are starting Grienke tonight, then Haren and Josh Beckett for the doubleheader. Kershaw still rehabbing, so fans won't get to see him pitch this time around. http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/dodger-report/post/_/id/9626/rain-out-doubleheader-create-scheduling-issues
  15. I wonder if all the postponements are going to be a net positive or a net negative for the starting rotation. Is extra rest going to make them sharper, or does all the cold/rainy weather cancel out any benefit? Will being off schedule, even if it means more rest, throw them off? Maybe that's a good think for Pelfrey, though.
  16. How many games will they actually play this week at Target Field ? Seems like it will be rainy until Saturday according to the most recent forecast I saw. I'm sure they will try to get as many games in as possible. I had this series circled as one to see (Puig, the Dodger pitching, etc.), but with the days and days of rain, I might skip trying to go to the games until the weekend.
  17. This was an interesting tidbit on MLB Trade Rumors : The Twins were called this weekend about the prospects of signing right-hander Scott Baker, but have no interest, tweets Darren Wolfson of 1500ESPN.com. Baker is currently pitching for the Rangers‘ Triple-A affiliate (2.77 ERA, 7.3 K/9, and 2.1 BB/9 in 26 innings covering four starts), but has a May 1st opt-out date. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/04/al-notes-cano-tigers-as-baker.html#disqus_thread They shouldn't have interest, should they? Baker would be an upgrade over _____ ? Would you rather have Baker or Pelfrey at this point? Probably just shuffling deck chairs to take on another contract for a 30+ year old starter.
  18. Maybe instead of retiring numbers they could just carve faces into the limestone? ... Maybe not. I think the people worth consideration for a Twins Mt. Rushmore have to be: Killebrew Puckett Carew Tony O Walter Johnson Tom Kelly The Metrodome's Right Field Baggy (kidding ?) The only thing keeping Mauer from my personal list is that he is still active. The not-quite-there guys would be all the Twins' own hall of famers like Hrbek, Blyleven, etc. etc.
  19. Here are the free agents for 2015 (this will be a smaller list by the time free agents are available for the Twins to sign, players may be re-signed or have contract extensions prior to becoming a free agent. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/league-info/potential-free-agents-for-2015/ Do any of these guys look like the answer long term? I don't think the free agent route will solve the problem, maybe the Twins could shell out a big contract for Hanley Ramirez (past his prime years?)? Or Ben Zobrist, who is not primarily a Short Stop, but seems to play there enough to be worth a look? I think Jed Lowrie is worth considering too. Ultimately, though, it's more likely that the Twins will roll the dice with developing an internal option.
  20. Arcia a few days earlier than Willingham, but PiPress tweeted that it would be another 10-14 days and both should be back on the 25-Man roster (assuming that's how the Twins want to do it - they could send Arcia to AAA to make sure he still plays everyday with all the guys on the ML roster that play LF/RF/DH right now) the tweet: Arcia remains ahead of Willingham in wrist rehab, but Rob Antony said both could be back in majors w/in 10-14 days. #MNTwins — Mike Berardino (@MikeBerardino) April 22, 2014
  21. Willingham adds a wrinkle (or two) to the Twins Roster. I agree that trading him at some point last year or in the offseason would have prevented a bit of the roster crunch the Twins seem to be facing at any moment. I don't know that the Twins would have tried to sign Kubel if they didn't already have Willingham - they were sort of mutual insurance policies. "If Willingham gets hurt, we'll have Kubel" or "If Kubel is truly washed up, we'll have Willingham." When Willingham is healthy, I think he is worth having in the lineup against lefties instead of Kubel - I think the ideal world would have a better defender in LF/RF and Willingham/Kubel/Colabello being one player that is a primary DH. If any of these guys were good/great outfielders, it would be a pretty easy decision to take that guy over the rest. I think the bigger crunch will be RF/DH - I suppose Arcia could be sent down to AAA so he gets to play everyday and Colabello can continue to ride his hot streak, but I would be a little surprised if the Twins did that. Pinto will deserve some of those DH at bats too. I guess it's an ok problem to have too many guys that you want to be hitting in your lineup.
  22. I'm curious if the Twins will try to DFA Wilson right away, or wait for another player to come across the waiver wire first. I agree that a marginal guy like this is not worth using up a 40-Man spot, but the Twins don't have many alternatives within the organization at the moment. It's probably a safe bet that Wilson is the first guy that will be DFA'd when the Twins make their next move.
