  1. oh, the shame! I remembered "High pockets Kelly" and Turkey Stearnes but somehow managed to omit Rod Carew? I must have been typing too fast.
  2. they'd be available for pinch hitting duties...
  3. or someone learning to be the 3rd catcher . . .
  4. Anyone on the site a collector? I recently started becoming interested again in collecting and I'm curious if anyone on the site still collects cards. There is (I think) a card show this weekend in Mounds View that I'm debating checking out. Anyone gone to it before? I guess there's also a semi-regular one in Bloomington as well.

  6. Correia has 3 quality starts out of 7 - that's bad. He's averaging a little under 6 innings per start, and has been yo-yoing between decent and dreadful each time out. The Good news? He was terrible last time out, he should be on schedule for a good start next time! Burton has had a decent string of appearances as well, at least compared to how he started the season. If the Twins do go to 12 pitchers, however, I think it should be Burton or Guerrier that gets sent down (or DFA'd / released) before anyone else.
  7. I couldn't find a specific study showing the frequency of rotator cuff injuries, but some recent notable players that had the operation: Jessie Crain Mark Mulder (twice!) Johan Santana Roy Halladay Here's an interesting article on Rotator cuff injuries from January of this year- Tommy John surgery seems to be the bigger headline right now, but Shoulder injuries that require surgery are still plaguing pitchers: http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/Rotator_cuff_surgery_still_a_turn-off_for_MLB_teams.html
  8. My dad grew up in Western Ohio in the 50's and 60's, so the Cincinnati Redlegs (Reds) would be my "new" team. I already half-heartedly cheer for the Reds since they are in the National League and are not one of the Twins' rivals. I could never be a Sox fan (either shade), or Detroit, or the Yankees. When there was a threat of contraction, I did briefly entertain the idea of becoming a Giants fan, but fortunately it never came to that.
  9. Man, Joe Mays. I wonder if Joe had had the benefit of today's understanding of Tommy John Surgery and rehab if he would have lasted longer in the majors post surgery. He was pretty much done after (though the season leading up to the procedure was not going all that well, either).
  10. KielMohr II ?
  11. My guess is that Colabello will not get sent down, even after everyone is healthy again. Parmelee is as good off the bench, but he's a lefty like Kubel and Mauer and Arcia. Colabello being a right-handed hitter works in his favor in this case - my guess is that Gardy would want a bench bat / pinch hitter that would be batting from the opposite side of the starter. Parmelee could have a pretty good rest of May and it might not matter.
  12. It is kind of silly for the Twins (or any team) to claim a guy for their 40-man that they don't think could crack their 25-man roster. Kenny Wilson in particular since the Twins had -1 healthy outfielders and DFA'd Wilson so they could add Parmelee to the 40 man. They didn't want to play Wilson to fill the injury need (and based on Wilson's AA stats, that is reasonable). I get the reasoning behind picking Wilson up (I even jokingly suggested that they do it to spite the Blue Jays), the Twins need OF depth. It still seems odd that they would have claimed specifically him in the first place given that they needed a player to fill a hole created by injury on the 25 man roster. He's years away from the Majors, so putting a claim on him was just filling a space on the 40 man that would need to be cleared when they had the next injury.
  13. He's (Willingham) been taking flips and hitting off a tee the last few days with no issues and is ready to give BP on the field another shot. He seems likely to require a rehab assignment before returning. May 9 - 4:41 PM Source: Rhett Bollinger on Twitter
  14. Incompetence is a two-way street, though, so I do have to give the Twins credit for not giving away as many games as their opposition has. Especially last week when the Twins were fielding injury-necessitated lineups that had no business being competitive. The fact that they won any of those games is impressive to me.
  15. I guess moves like Santana to CF depend on how Gardy wants to approach the season. I would agree with the argument that Hicks is not the answer at the position either long term or short term. I think Santana's development as a shortstop would be hurt by having him in center. Again, I think it depends on what the Twins want long term for him and for the team. If they really want him to be the guy at SS, they probably won't play him regularly in center in hopes of winning a few more games this year. I think it would be fine to have Fuld in center regularly this year since the team is not going to the playoffs this season - it would be better to give Santana starts at SS, either on the Twins or in Rochester. Hicks, geez, I dunno. Is starting in AAA going to help him?
  16. The team seems to me to be right on the edge of being great. They've got several players that overperformed in the early going, but are now showing their age (both versions - old age for guys like Kubel and inexperience for some of the young players). The old guys are just getting older, and the young guys aren't there yet. They've been fun (if a bit frustrating) to watch this year. It's not ideal to be stuck in a holding pattern, waiting for the prospects to develop and fielding a roster of spare parts, but compared to the last few seasons, it's been an encouraging season.
  17. The Twins are currently #6 in the Majors in terms of Runs Scored per Game, at 4.82 R/G. Unfortunately, they are #4 in the Majors in terms of Runs Allowed at 4.97 R/G There's always room for a little optimism, Nolasco has been much better his last two starts, Hughes is settling into a groove, Deduno should be better than Pelfrey, so the starting pitching overall is trending up. The injury bug bit really hard (one could argue that was inevitable given the age / injury history of the guys on the shelf, but I think it was still worse than expected.) , and some of those players should be back very soon, the nightmare week that was is almost over.
  18. ok - so right now the Twins have the following active position players Suzuki and Pinto - C Colabello and Mauer (Day to Day) - 1B Dozier - 2B Escobar and Santana - SS Plouffe - 3B Kubel - LF Nuñez - UTIL Any word yet on Hicks and Arcia for this weekend series? Looking back at this week, obviously this was a huge mess. Even a team with a great contingency plan in place would be hard pressed to field a team when Arcia/Hicks/Fuld/Mauer/Willingham are all unable to play at the same time. I sincerely hope that Guerrier and Burton are pitted against one another for the next week or so and the Twins take one (or both!) off the 40-Man and replace them with some younger talent. The outfield depth throughout the organization is stronger than it looks; the problem is that it is all too young to help the big league club at the moment. The options are not great - the Twins could potentially seek a trade to move some spare parts from their AAA team for someone elses spare part outfielders. Would any team trade an AAA (or even AAAA) outfielder for Bernier? or Fryer (blasphemy, I know)?
  19. . . . and there was much rejoicing in Twins Territory! At least, until we find out who is replacing them . . .
  20. Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in... I have to say that these games are all very close - they are figuring out how to compete despite the rube goldberg roster
  21. any word on Nuñez ? Did he get pulled over for speeding? "Officer, I have to get to the stadium, we've only got 2 active outfielders!" "That looks like a infielder's glove to me, son. Step out of the car please."
  22. Hey, the Twins' starters have been less terrible at striking out batters lately! this has been a silver lining moment
  23. if Correia can just strike out the next 25 guys, it won't matter who's in center.
