  1. I have not read anything since his surgery to hint at the option being considered by the team - coming off surgery, he may be willing to stick with the Twins on a one-year deal, though in my opinion he's probably going to be offered more money to sign with another team. The Twins would benefit from having Baker as depth, but given how thin their rotation has been the last few years, it would not be a good investment to offer Baker the kind of deal he'll get elsewhere. Other teams can afford to offer something around 5 million to Baker and still not have to rely on him to give 25-30 starts for that money. For the Twins to spend 3 to 5 million on a starter next season, they will need that player to pitch more innings and make more starts than can be reasonable expected for a guy their first year coming off TJ surgery. I think at his best health, Baker is a great asset - the Twins probably can't afford that risk given their needs next season.
  2. Oh! he'd been throwing with his left hand while he was here - no wonder he was so bad.
  3. Pavano, Thome (from his time with the Dodgers), Jared Burton are some recent examples. The fact that the Twins are rarely aggressive buyers on the free agent market means they don't get many surprises.
  4. Is Bard still unsigned? Is there any reason to think he won't sign?
  5. That makes sense. It's probably a good idea to still give Morneau some at bats against lefty pitching - maybe there's a compromise to allow him to find his batting stroke against back-end the rotation lefties and bench him against guys like Hamels, Sabathia, etc. etc.
  6. Well, this is probably the closest the Twins will be to deciding the outcome of this year's World Series winner. It doesn't really matter who is in the game or not. It is a nice honor, though, to be recognized by the fans as the best at your position. Most guys (if they've been selected to the team before) probably would prefer the extra day off, anyway. I seem to recall Mauer being quoted as enjoying the All-Star Break by going fishing the whole time last year.
  7. Well, if they need an excuse to put Mauer at first more often... here's as good a reason as any - start Mauer at first against lefties?
  8. I wonder if the less-than-casual fan is also voting for players other than Mauer at Catcher. He's played almost as many games away from the position as he has played behind the plate this year. While I think he is a good choice to be an All-Star again this year, he's not playing as much at the position as the other guys on the ballot. A.J. is doing better this year than I would have guessed... I forget, does Ron Washington have the sole vote for the reserves, or do all the managers have input? I bet Napoli has an edge if it comes down to Wash picking the backup (assuming he doesn't win outright) . The Rangers' players are getting a ton of votes this year -a winning team sure is a big deal in All-Star selections. Here's an article from yesterday on SB Nation about why people might be voting for a particular player - http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2012/6/14/3083200/what-tools-do-fans-look-for-in-mlb-all-star-voting
  9. Span is a player with whom the Twins have a win-win situation. If you keep him, he's got a good contract and he fills several needs (speed, leadoff, CF defense). If you trade him, he should bring back good pieces. It was noted in a few other threads what similar trades have yielded recently (Michael Bourn, Nate McLouth, Hunter Pence). The Twins should try to get a deal that beats those ( though the Pence deal probably will be hard to match). If they can't get an offer better than those, keeping Span is still good for the team. Doumit is a tough one, because he fills a lot of holes for the Twins as a switch hitter with power. His defense is not so great, and he's only on a one-year deal. If the Twins don't trade him, I bet they will give him another contract (or at least try to re-sign him). With Liriano and Pavano, is kind of the opposite of Span. They will not be cheap to re-sign when their contracts expire, and they are probably not worth much on the trade market right now. The Twins aren't likely to get much for either one, but they are probably worse off if they keep them (and probably would have been better served trying to trade them sooner, though that's really only in hindsight).
  10. Maybe "depth" in the sense that there are more players at roughly the same level of effectiveness than there are at-bats to go around. They can't be all that deep if they only have two major-league ready starting Outfielders. It reminds me of when they had Bobby Kielty and Dustan Mohr sort-of platooning. That's not so much depth as it is not having anyone good enough to be the go-to starter. Lew Ford, Michael Restovich and Michael Ryan were all AAAA guys that weren't getting it done. So the Twins traded for Shannon Stewart and then they had *some* depth in that they could have Lew Ford come in when one of the Soul Patrol needed a day off. The current team is similar in the outfield to 2002/2003 but tilted more to Offense over Defense starting. Revere has been pretty good this second time around, he might end up being the guy to take that 3rd spot. It seems like he's going to be given the chance to do it.
  11. I'm in favor of combining the two. Or, at least, you don't have to throw 4 wide ones if the bases are empty. If there's a guy on, the pitcher should still have to account for the runner that could potentially advance on one of those 4 pitches.
  12. Award two bases for an intentional walk - I've seen that written a few times in other places, and I like the idea as a way to encourage the players/managers to pitch to guys in key situations.
  13. I think it could be a different discussion if Oswalt was likely to pitch 4 or 5 more years, but he's probably looking to pitch this season and maybe one (or part of one) more. The Twins won't be in contention for a World Series title this year or next, so Oswalt would have to have a change of heart to play for Minnesota at this point.
  14. I think DeVries would be on regular rest if he started on Thursday for the Twins - has a corresponding move been made yet? Liriano hasn't seemed to figure out his control/delivery problems yet, he's probably not the right guy to rejoin the rotation just yet. It's too bad that Marquis didn't meet expectations, it was a fairly low bar set for a pitcher that was a solid back of the rotation guy just a couple years ago.
  15. Perkins was just toying with them, see? It's all part of the plan...
  16. oh boy - Frankie's coming in
  17. Flexibility meaning that you have Mastro on the bench, who can fill in for almost anyone on the field in case of injury. If Butera's on the bench, you only have Komatsu available...
  18. Maybe putting Butera in the lineup gives Gardy more bench flexibility with Doumit and Span technically active but not able to play?
  19. oh -oops. In that case, yeah, it would be nice to have a better hitter than Butera in the lineup.
  20. Yeah, that's true. I would be cautious of Dempster moving to the AL - Even though the AL Central isn't as tough as the AL East, I imagine it's still better than the NL Central (plus Dempster wouldn't get to pitch against the Twins' lineup). Pavano's making 8.5 Million this year - that should mean that the Twins could replace him with someone better at the same price or less.
  21. With Doumit out, this makes some sense - they probably were going to have Doumit catch and Mauer DH today.
  22. Possibly no one - for now. There's an off day coming up when it would be his turn to go, so they may just skip his spot and figure out a move for the next start.
  23. Calling up Revere must be more to do with Span's hamstring than it has to do with Doumit's injury. I hope that if Blackburn is really injured that he goes on the DL soon, too so the Twins can call up either another bench player (an infielder makes the most sense) or finally give Slama a chance to stick with the big league club.
