  1. Hanley Ramirez will be a free agent - if the Twins want to add another player on top of who they have, I think Hanley is the only guy that would be a clear upgrade offensively. I doubt very highly that the Twins would pursue him, and if even if they did, I imagine that the Dodgers and/or Yankees would outbid the Twins to get him. I just don't see Asdrubal Cabrera as being that much better than the current roster. I do think he could hit for more power, but I see the $$ it would take to sign him as better served in other areas.
  2. Well - if Escobar can be the starting SS from Opening Day to September in 2015, then I'd say he's doing the best since Guzman. The Twins have had some temporary luck with Shortstops (renting Orlando Cabrera in 2010, Jason Bartlett 1.0) but no one that has played decently for more than one year since Guzman. Given that the Twins are really high on Santana as a SS, they might be pushing that revolving door again very soon.
  3. My vote for Quietly Solid - Tony O's Cuban sandwiches at Target Field. So good. I get one every time I go to a game now.
  4. Necessity is the mother of invention. He's in CF because no one else can do it as well, and Eddie is still hitting very well while playing SS. Injuries in the OF and trading Hammer means they are thin in the outfield and they have no room in the infield. If Escobar could play OF well, he'd be in LF or CF and Santana would be at SS. Santana just happens to be able to play the position that the Twins need him to play.
  5. The sense that I got from reading about him as a trade candidate leading up to the deadline was that his glovework at Short was declining - I read that the Nationals were planning on using him at 2b instead of SS (The Nationals do have a very good young SS already - Ian Desmond). So far he's played 10 games at 2B for Washington, with a three inning stint at short in one game. I would say that Escobar and Santana are pretty close to Cabrera in terms of overall value, but they are cheaper. Escobar has a 1.2 WAR (baseball reference) to this point in the season, if he was starting in April instead of Florimon, maybe it would be even closer to Cabrera's numbers. Cabrera would hit more homers than Escobar, but Eddie's got doubles power and more speed than Cabrera. I'd spend FA money on LF and Starting Pitching (as in, going all in on James Shields- not getting another #4/5 filler) before thinking about Cabrera.
  6. yep - tested it anyway and changing my username on VJ changes it on TD as well.
  7. Yeah - this is cool - I created a separate username because I felt mine was a bit too Twins-specific for a Vikes site. My username at Vikings Journal is "Gjallarhornist"
  8. how unlucky can one prospect be? Also, I can't tell from the video, but did either outfielder call the other one off? Buxton looked like he was running hard and Kvasnicka shows up in the frame at the last second... They both seemed 100% focused on the ball. I get a sick feeling watching that clip and seeing the collision and Buxton is just out cold and motionless.
  9. They have to let Gibson come back for the 8th now, right?
  10. Wow - they want no part of Joe Mauer
  11. Defensive replacement, or did Nuñez get injured?
  12. Mauer adds on to his hitting streak . . .
  13. My guess is that May will take the spot in the rotation from Pino, and that Pino will be optioned to make roster space for Nolasco. But who knows? TR might find takers for the remaining veterans on the team (Burton, for instance) and open another spot via trade.
  14. Maybe even a little more, given the fact that Eddie has hit much better than Florimon ever has.
  15. Laudner is pretty suprising to see on that list, but I suppose he really wasn't a contact hitter, was he? I would have guessed Kirby, Hrbek, Oliva, and Bruno before Laudner... That's neat. Hammer is still the all-time leader for homers at Target Field, yes? Plouffe is right behind him, right?
  16. Maybe - I think I would prefer to keep Escobar and Santana until another prospect comes along to take one of their places - that could be pretty soon. Opening 2015 with Santana in CF and Escobar at SS is currently the best option. I think Escobar would need to show that this season is repeatable before he would have "sell high" trade value. He's been great this year, no question.
  17. Good defense and 31 Doubles (that's 5th in the AL among all hitters) - Escobar has been much better than expected. Comparing this year to the rest of his career, he certainly seems to have turned a corner and earned his spot as the regular starting Shortstop. Still would like to see Santana getting some reps there, but honestly it feels like Escobar has done enough to show he should be the guy for the Twins at SS in the near future.
  18. I think Chris Young only makes sense to the Twins in the offseason as a minor league free agent. If the Twins are looking to add OF depth for the rest of this season, they can always bring Hicks up again. Adding Young now doesn't solve any issues that the Twins currently have, and I don't think it helps them win in the short term either. They are better off rolling with the current lineup and giving as many ABs as possible to Parmelee, Santana, and Arcia (when healthy). No need to add any filler until the offseason, just give the playing time to the guys who are already here and decide after the season who stays and who goes.
  19. This seems like a steal to me - The Twins had Sam Fuld on Waivers from Oakland for *nothing (*they lost a guy from the bottom of the 40 man to the Angels, right? A pitcher?), held onto him for awhile, and then ended up with a young lefty starter that is better than the AAAA Carousel they've been trotting out. I like this deal a lot at this moment. I imagine both teams are happy with this deal, and both players feel ok about it too.
  20. Read an update on MLB trade Rumors that Suzuki was also being scouted by the Giants... the Twins have had success trading catchers to San Fran before....
  21. Well, there's always the risk that the player just doesn't meet the level of ML competition - the Twins know that all too well (Nishioka). Several recent players from Cuba have made the transition from Serie Nacional to the Majors look easy - but it's never a sure thing. I think it's worth taking a shot, though the Twins may have already missed out on the best options ( Cespedes, Puig, and Abreu ).
  22. If they can throw millions of dollars down a well for multiple years of Mike Pelfrey, why not spend $$ on a Free Agent that's still in his prime? The Twins' payroll is shrinking as they are getting younger - why not spend a little now?
  23. So - who is making all these errors for E-Town? I am noticing for the first time on this report the number of unearned runs scored in that game. Is that typical for that level, and does it have to do with factors beyond the player's control? Or is it something to be concerned about regarding the defensive ability of some of the E-Town Prospects?
  24. Seeing the new look for the first time - it's nice - really appreciate all the work that is done to make this forum run smoothly. I agree with Curt above - reading through the thead was great. Thanks to all that make this forum such a great place to share the love of the Twins!
