  1. Dang - that does sound exciting! I think if there's a clock, though, I would recommend a pitching machine. As cool as it is for players to get their pick of whomever they want to throw them BP, I think with the time element added a pitching machine would make the contest more fair to each contestant.
  2. Came back to read this one again - the line "“Gentlemen, for the first 60 feet, that was a hell of a pitch,” Spahn told reporters" kills me.
  3. oh and to bring it slightly back on topic: for a big dude, Vargas got to 2nd on his double relatively quickly - faster than, say, Kendrys Morales. All of which is to be expected, given the difference in age between the two. Morales would not be a bad signing for one more year, but I would not endorse more than that.
  4. I mean, I didn't weigh the guy, and I was in the RF seats in foul territory, but on Sunday he looked big and muscular, not chubby. He's a big dude, he looked more like a lefty Stanton than Ortiz (but he's somewhere in the middle of those two guys) to me. I took some pictures, I can try to post them when I get home . . .
  5. Maybe fewer competitors? It's tricky because it is great to have lots of participants, but on the other hand having ten guys get 7 outs each means a really long first round.
  6. Man, rock and roll just hasn't been as good since 1976. This was a fun "what if" - I think it really emphasizes how each move a team makes can have far-reaching impact on the future. Not signing Hunter had a ripple effect on lots of future Twins moves. Even seemingly smaller deals, like adding Ryan Doumit, changed who the Twins would look to add for the two seasons he was here - same with Willingham right now.
  7. Anyone stay up to watch the whole thing? Cool to see Morneau again at TF, it was a nice moment. Cepedes was beastly, and it's too bad that Stanton didn't make it to the Final Round, he looked dialed at the start. Man, that was really long. I thought it would be better in this format, but I still think it takes too much time for everyone to hit.
  8. True story. Fuld is better than the other two guys, the Twins were very fortunate that Fuld fell into their laps. In a vacuum, losing either of those two guys was not an issue, but given the context and how hamstrung the Twins were in CF, it was a bit galling that Mastro was lost to add Fuld, it would have been a lot better if the Twins had found another way to add Fuld without subtracting Mastro. Oh, and then there's the whole Kenny Wilson thing, too.
  9. Oh, and I guess I would rather the Twins look to sign a guy that can play in Left Field and hit instead of Morales. Maybe that's Span, though I think at this point Morales would be a better hitter over a full season than Span. Morales for one more year would be perfectly acceptable move for the Twins to make, assuming they trade Willingham and don't try to sign him back again.
  10. I'm guessing Boras wouldn't agree to a smaller base salary with performance incentives for his client? Of course Morales likes it here! He's getting to play again, the young guys seem to really like him, Gardy puts him in the lineup every chance he gets, the food's a little bland and it's 55 degrees in July, but hey, at least he's starting! I'm sure the Twins have rolled out the red carpet for him, they were looking to make a headline grabbing signing to keep the public interest, so it's a win win for both parties that a deal was done for this year. If I were the GM, I would offer something between $5 and $7 million with incentives that could push the earnings to $8 or $9 million. One year with a team option for 2016. "hey, if you don't like it, you can repeat this year's waiting game."
  11. that's a good question - it seems like Morales has been talking to some of the young guys, Arcia in particular. Dozier could step to be that guy. Even someone like Colabello, who doesn't have the same MLB resume, could be an example to the young guys. He's certainly had to work really hard to get here. Suzuki seems to be that guy for the pitching staff. With Morneau gone, I do wonder who became the vocal leader in the clubhouse. Maybe Kurt, maybe Dozier.
  12. I believe it! I don't recall if he had another chance to throw someone out, but that throw was pretty good.
  13. I thought I would create a separate thread for anyone that wanted to talk about that exhibition game after the Futures Game. Some highlights for me - Rickey hit a leadoff Homer, some impressive defense from Nelly and James Denton, the awesome catch and throw from the wounded warrior, everyone booing Mike Piazza for not letting Thome's foul pop up drop, AP vs. Jennie Finch - I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did.
  14. I forget who the USA team had in RF, but he had a strong throw back in on that Vargas double - I was surprised by the throw and that Vargas beat it out (the infielder covering 2nd didn't hold onto it, but I think Vargas would've been safe regardless). Vargas hit it pretty solidly, but I was thinking it would have been a single since the RF was playing deeper.
  15. Man - really great to watch the prospects play. It's such a small sample size, and there were lots of mismatches (AAA pitching vs. A batters and vice versa). The Cubs SS Baez looked really good. Pitching for the most part made the hitters look foolish, even Kris Bryant, the top prospect to play in the game yesterday looked lost at times. Gallo's homer cracked the windshield of a Chevy truck that was on the plaza for a giveaway, a bunch of people were taking snapshots of it after the game.
  16. I'm pretty stoked for the futures game, I'm going with a few friends. Has it been determined if either of the two pitchers will be starting the game? Will Vargas be in the starting lineup?
  17. If the Cardinals want to replace Molina with someone outside the org, they'll have to play better defense than AJ, and hit better than Buck. Suzuki is the best of the three, though I'm guessing the Cardinals will really miss Molina's defense no matter who replaces him. Suzuki is probably the most attractive option for St. Louis, assuming they can't pry Russell Martin away from their division rivals. The Twins should make the Cardinals (or anyone else interested in Suzuki) pay a premium for the best available catcher on the market.
  18. Abosolutely, just seek talent first. I'd take a 5+ WAR season from a player regardless of their age.
  19. This thread is really cool. Thanks Jack for taking all these questions!
  20. Who? . . . Oh yeah, that guy. Not to beat the age horse, but it seems to make sense to be patient with guys like Worley (to an extent) when they are under 30, and maybe not as patient with players a bit longer in the tooth that don't seem to have it anymore (Kubel, Bartlett). Ultimately, I don't think missing out on Worley is a big loss to the Twins. The age thing doesn't really matter that much either, assuming the performance is there. I just think being patient with players that are on the upward path towards their peak is better than patience for guys slowly (or quickly) sliding away from their peak years. If they had Worley, would he have been up instead of Pino? Or would he have made that spot start instead of Kris Johnson? Or the call up to the pen instead of Logan Darnell? My guess is no on all counts...
  21. Interesting! I think any team that was looking to trade for Suzuki will still want Kurt over AJ at this point. I mean, Kurt>AJ>John Buck is probably how that all shakes out. Another article on AJ's DFA http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/red-sox-to-designate-a-j-pierzynski-for-assignment.html
  22. Of all the former Twins listed, I think Neshek and Denard have the best chance to provide meaningful value to the 2015 team. I don't think the Twins should try to sign any of them. If Span is willing and able to play in Left Field, there's value there. But no to Cuddyer, no to Torii, no to Hardy and the rest - we can still have fond memories and those players without giving them a roster spot.
  23. off topic, but this is my favorite Delmon memory: http://cdn3.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1022903/ThomeYoung.gif.opt_medium.gif
