  1. YUCK. Gibson is really stinking up the joint. Can we just skip to game 2?
  2. That's about what I figured given his age. We'll have to just wait another couple years for the Miracle's Outfield to make it up to the Show then.
  3. Do other teams want to hire away coaches from our system? I don't know of any rumors related to the vacancies in Texas (Rangers or Houston Astros) and managers or bench coaches here. It does seem to me that one indicator for how your coaching staff is working relates to how much they are in demand by the rest of the league. Dave Martinez gets mentioned a lot - working in the Rays system for Joe Maddon and is considered to be a great teacher and manager in his own right. Does anyone hear about other teams praising the Twins' coaches? Or about other teams with potential vacancies (TX, Arizona) being interested in interviewing the Twins' staff? Maybe it's a lack of interest from the Twins' staff, or the Twins' front office not granting permission (or just keeping a tight lid on rumors), but it seems to me like they are not being courted by other organizations. Is it just me?
  4. Great article - love to see that there's a mix of levels represented, something to look forward to. Is Reynaldo Rodriguez a guy that could move up? Does he profile as a career minor leaguer, or is there any chance he would be competing for a job in Left Field for the Twins in Spring Training? Assuming they don't find a ML ready Free agent, that position is pretty wide open in 2015.
  5. Gold Glove awards are often given to guys that also have big offensive numbers too - I think this year Josh Donaldson will win it for Third Basemen (and he's had a great year defensively as well). Plouffe is better than he used to be, that's for sure - the defense is improving and the doubles have been nice on the other side of things.
  6. A win one night, followed by a rain out? That just about qualifies for a winning streak around here!
  7. Here's a fun one - Jared Burton has entered the game this year 15 times in "Save Situations" (just any time the Twins had the lead in the 7th or later) and has not once given up the lead. 13 holds and 2 saves.
  8. I think it's worth noting that between this vacancy and the Padres' GM vacancy earlier this year, there were no rumors of candidates being from the Twins' Front Office. Towers seems to be getting the Bill Smith option, too - he can stay on with the D'Backs as a senior scout if he chooses to do so.
  9. He (Perkins) looked pretty locked in at the ASG, if you want an example of a pressure situation. That's probably the "biggest" game he's pitched in this year.
  10. Molitor's only other coaching gig was as Seattle's Hitting Coach in 2004. Otherwise, he's been with the Twins as a roving instructor or as the bench coach.
  11. I didn't realize this, but Scott Ullger had 7 winning seasons (4 playoff appearances, one Championship) as a minor league manager in the late 80's and the 90's. He coached A, AA, and AAA teams and never had a losing record. http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Scott_Ullger I highly doubt that he'd be in the running to replace Gardenhire, but, then again, who knows? There were plenty of people thinking that Molitor would get the job back in 2001...
  12. How about Chuck Knoblauch? He's intense and won championships with both the Twins and other organizations... ok, that's the last "outside the box idea for manager" joke from me on this thread, I promise. My guess is that if Gardy is not here in 2015, it will be Molitor. I think Mientkiewicz would be the choice as successor in a few years, assuming he moves up a level or two in the meantime.
  13. Ladies and gentlemen, the next Twins field manager will be Joe Vavra! jk
  14. Assuming Rick Anderson is not retained for next season, who should take his place? Bobby Cuellar seems like he'd be next in line to take the gig - does it seem like he would be a significant improvement? What about getting a guy from the minor league system? I don't know much about him beyond reading interviews on TD, but Ivan Arteaga from the Cedar Rapids team seems like a really smart coach. second assuming - - if Gardy/Anderson et al are done after this season, will the coaching staffs in the minors start getting moved up the ladder, or is the general consensus of people in the know that the org. likes the coaches right where they are? EDIT TO ADD: My guess is that if Anderson is let go, Gardy will resign. If those two are gone, I'm guessing Ullger and Vavra will be gone as well, but the Twins may retain Molitor and Steinbach (especially if they make Molitor the new manager, I think Steinbach will be back too). I don't know if Cuellar will stick around at that point, but I get the sense that he is well liked by org.
  15. Is there data out there showing how often Gardy / Anderson call the bullpen and have guys warming up to potentially come in to the game? And innings pitched are one thing, how about total pitches? And how many days' rest, on average, are the bullpen members getting between appearances?
  16. I'd say it's mostly overuse, with a little bit of badness sprinkled in.
  17. Or in Nolasco's case, overpaying for the first year, but hopefully not the next three.
  18. It's kind of amazing to think that Nolasco's contract was nearly the largest FA starting pitching contract of the last offseason. Tanaka's contract more than doubled everyone elses, but #2 was a tie with Matt Garza and Ubaldo Jimenez both making $50MM over 4 years. Nolasco's $49MM over four years almost looks like a stea-*Dodges brick* It would both be surprising and not surprising if the Twins tried rolling the dice again - they obviously felt that they had money to spend last off-season . . . they would still be below annual payrolls they've had in the past
  19. I will stick by earlier statement - if the Twins manage to sign one of the top 3 FA pitchers and a LF this offseason (either Melky or Yasmani Tomas), I'll buy season tickets for 2015.
  20. Weren't people singing the praises of Molly and the baserunning at the beginning of the year? Dozier in particular was getting a lot of compliments for his aggressive baserunning. I actually think Vargas is a pretty smart baserunner - he's not very fast, but he seems (from the admittedly unreliable eyball test) to take extra bases when he can and he limits mistakes. Schafer and Nuñez are the two guys that have been, in my opinion, particularly bad baserunners, especially given the fact that they are among the fastest guys on the team. They are the "new" guys....
  21. History implies that the Twins will not spend big this offseason - last offseason was an exception to a rule of getting very low risk low upside FA pitching. Maybe they will repeat last year's method and try to sign one or even two FA starters that are league average or better (league average meaning guys that are at least as expensive/ "proven" as Ricky Nolasco) And maybe they will go after a FA outfielder to take over in Left... Last offseason they addressed some of the big holes (SP x2, C) while leaving others (LF, CF) - it's possible that it's now the way they will do business going forward. I'm skeptical. I agree with some of the earlier posts - players like Morrow, McCarthy, Brett Anderson, and Justin Masterson might sign short deals to make good. The Twins should consider guys like that to challenge the notion that Nolasco, Milone, and Pelfrey have job security.
  22. Wait, can't we blame the bad baserunning on Scott Ullger?
  23. As long as the next Twins GM is not David Kahn, I'll be happy.
