  1. So, probably safest to just refer to him as JT . . .
  2. Joking aside about the contract, Pelfrey is a Minnesota Twin currently, and is under contract for the 2015 season. Of the starting Pitchers currently in the mix for the 2015 rotation, Pelfrey is probably 5th, 6th, or 7th depending on how you rate Alex Meyer and Tommy Milone. I definitely think that Pelfrey is an asset - I'd rather the Twins be able to turn to a healthy version of Mike Pelfrey once every five days than some of the marginal AAAA guys. But healthy is the key point - so that's going to have to be his goal for the bulk of the off-season and Spring Training. Showing the team that he's past the injuries of this year. Maybe he can thrive in the bullpen - I wonder how open he will be to that role.
  3. It sure was! Was there legitimate reason to think he would have signed anywhere else for a two year deal? Or that he wouldn't be perfectly happy with a one year deal from the Twins? I know that your quote is being taken out of context, but a little bit of coffee came shooting out of my nose when I read that sentence.
  4. The timing is still a bit odd - if they made the decision earlier, he'd be playoff eligible (they may have even been able to coax a team to give a player back in return). We will likely never know, but maybe Florimon passed unclaimed through trade waivers in August, no one claimed him then- and Ryan did not make or get an offer. Even with that scenario, there was no need to make the roster move during the regular season, right? Is it doing Florimon a favor to put him on waivers now so a team gets to audition him for a couple weeks? Or did the Twins just do the Nationals a favor by letting them kick the tires on him? Maybe someone that has more insight into this can explain why Florimon was good enough to be on the 40-Man through all of August, but not good enough for a September call-up or good enough to remain in the org until after the regular season. He might have passed through waivers in October/November just fine since a claiming team wouldn't have the chance to see him in person. Keeping him in the org, but off the 40-Man wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. I guess Doug Bernier is the guy they want to keep around?
  5. I haven't seen any video, but the things I've read are that Tomas has a better than average arm, but a raw glove. He's not slow footed, but Rusney Castillo is supposed to be faster. Possibly similar to Cespedes, however, Tomas is younger which means (to me, anyway) that his defense is less developed than the other recent Cuban stars.
  6. The player that Washington DFA'd to make room for Florimon could have some value for the Twins - the speedy outfielder Eury Perez... go ahead Twins, pull a Toronto and claim him!
  7. 18 year old catcher Rainis Silva was on Jonathan Mayo's "Bonus prospect List," I'm curious how he compares to the other catchers there, as they all seem to be highly regarded and/or had good seasons this year.
  8. Silva's one of the catchers in the instructional league (along with all the familiar Twins Catching prospects) - maybe someone will have some observations to share in terms of how he fares relative to the other guys.
  9. Dang that's a lot of runs allowed.
  10. hmm. best of luck to Pedro in Washington, I expected him to be one of the guys on the outside of the 40-Man looking in this off-season.
  11. Just a general question - how do you pronounce Chargois? Charge-y? Shar-goy? Char-goes? Cargo? Something else?
  12. Someone commented on Reusse's article that signing Gardenhire to a two year extension and Anderson to just one year was intentionally making Anderson the scapegoat and insulating Gardy from the criticism. There might be something to that - the Twins did choose to announce firing Jerry White and the other coaches during the season ticket renewal period - "Hey we're making changes, we hear you!" So, I expect to hear that Anderson is not coming back sometime in October.. (or sooner) "See? The Twins are listening to you and taking action!" That's a pretty cynical take, I don't buy it really myself, but I did entertain that it was possible for a few moments...
  13. Yes - the clubhouse chemistry would be really hard to factor in. He seems like a guy that Gardy would like in that he talks in a similar vein: "battle," "grind," etc etc. and the comments after the article from Jays fans seem to back up that he does at least give the appearance of maximum effort. This interview seems like the opposite of the issues that came up regarding Aaron Hicks this year. I suspect that a lot of what we hear about in terms of clubhouse / team chemistry is through the lens of the local media, so what we're getting is a LaVelle or Sid filtered version of who works hard, who is a positive clubhouse guy and who is a cancer. He gives the impression that he would play well in an environment in which he's not micro-managed. Again, depending on how the clubhouse is being characterized, that could be what it is like in Minnesota, or he might hate it here...
  14. interesting interview with Colby Rasmus - seems like he's going to be looking for a new team this offseason. The Twins could be a fit, especially if he's looking for a short term contract to re-build his value: http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/scott_macarthur/?id=461951
  15. Schafer is absolutely an upgrade in defense in Left field. Personally I would like for him to be a fourth outfielder for the Twins, meaning that a guy with a better bat would be starting in his place. Schafer and Hicks sharing CF/LF in 2015 is not the worst thing that could happen, but it seems to me that it would not be all that hard for the Twins to do better than that in the offseason. Schafer/Hicks (assuming Hicks will be better than he was this year) beats the defensive alignments that involved Colabello, Parmelee, Willingham, etc. Lose a little offense this way.
  16. Swarzak to the Pirates for Tabata- he becomes a 15 game winner. "He should have been starting this whole time, we watched the tape and found he was wearing the wrong size hat." -- Pirates pitching coach
  17. I enjoyed a lot of the recommendations above and I will add a few I've read in the last few years: Satchel: The Life and Times of An American Legend by Larry Tye about Satchel Paige The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's America by Joe Posnanski (his book about the mid 70's Cincinnati Reds, The Machine, is also pretty good) The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach is a good novel that sometimes focuses on baseball, and other times strays pretty far from the field of play. The title refers to a fictional book written by one of the characters in the novel that I wish was a real book on its own... And there's always Moneyball by Michael Lewis - still a great read and one of the better looks inside front office life. all of the links are to amazon.com - you can find paperback versions of each of the titles via amazon for a penny (not including shipping...)
  18. The Royals would take Duensing for Gordon, right? The ol' Duenslinger can be traded for anyone in theory. I agree with the original post in that the Twins will be better next year if they can remove the players that are creating negative value from the roster. Some of them have been off the team for some time - Bartett, Kubel, Morales, etc. I don't know if Milone is due to turn his performance around, or if his past success was related to his big home field advantage in Oakland. Adding a starting Pitcher to the current staff that can amass 2 or greater WAR for 2015 and push one of the fringe candidates to the bullpen or AAA can make a huge difference. Adding even a 0 WAR (defensively) player to LF could mean a much improved team overall. Santana's been playing well above expectations, I hope it continues, but I would not be shocked if he had a bit of a "sophomore slump" in 2015 just because the league will have better scouting on him and will make adjustments.
  19. I imagine that lineup will win a few contests in Chattanooga. I bet they are stoked in Chattanooga, too, to get a whole new roster of prime-time prospects!
  20. Zimmerman might be traded since he can't really play 3rd base anymore, and he's a left fielder in the same way that Nelson Cruz or Josh Willingham is a left fielder - except he's only been playing there this year. He probably can still hit for years to come, but he's more likely a DH for the long term.
  21. Here's a quick montage of Chattanooga: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp7t7-kuGXs
  22. Bobby Dylan was the one "Stuck Inside of Mobile (with the Memphis Blues [Again])"
  23. Burton has a team option for 3.6MM or a 200k buyout - So, hopefully yes, he should be a free agent this offseason.
  24. I agree that a significant upgrade is needed and a half-measure isn't going to make much difference. The specific example of Aoki is probably not the guy the Twins need. I would argue that his defense is above average, but I do concede the point that his bat is below average. There really aren't many viable options available via free agency. Next year's FA class is much more appealing. However, by then the Twins should have made some promotions and adding an outside player will be stunting the growth of their prospects. If they want to upgrade this offseason, they are probably going to have to do it via trade (or just sign Yasmani Tomas!). To get someone good, they may need to give something up of real value. I think there are players on the current 40 Man roster that won't make the cut this offseason. The Twins will be adding a few players to the 40 Man just to protect the prospects from the Rule V draft, so that means that there will definitely be some turnover. Whether any of the departing players have trade value is debatable. Also agree on the pitching staff. You can have too many Pelfrey-level guys, but not too many Aces, so there's no problem for the Twins to offer contracts to the top 3 or 4 free agent pitchers, but beyond that we're better off going with the in-house options.
  25. There was this article in July about his midsummer swoon - http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/what-happened-to-brian-dozier/ he's really improved his plate discipline relative to that bad month of July, and it seems like he's adjusting to the league's new approach to pitching him. I think the average isn't going to move too much one way or the other, but he remains very valuable to the lineup with his combo of power/speed/patience at the plate.
