  1. One thing that I haven't understood is why the Twins keep playing 1B in the outfield. Parmelee is right on the edge of being athletic enough to be in the outfield, but I would think that most teams would only consider using him out there if there was an emergency situation. And Colabello? Sheesh. He's a cool dude, and I wish him the best success for the rest of the year and in the future, but he really should not be considered an outfielder. He's a decent First Baseman, and when he's hitting well, he's worth a look at DH or as the main RH bench bat. I realize that the Roster construction is what it is, but I have to believe that Colabello will be gone next year, and if he is, his replacement on the 40 Man will hopefully be a true outfielder.
  2. I think Twins fans will be waiting until some time in 2015 to see Alex Meyer pitching at Target Field again. The guys that have been shuttled back and forth all season are more than likely going to be back up once Rochester's season is over. I'm looking forward to seeing Josmil Pinto playing again, and it will be interesting to see if the Twins decide to recall Hicks for the last month or if they hold him out.
  3. The Defense is really horrific in the outfield - it's been terrible since Revere was traded. Hicks and Arcia are young enough that I believe both have the ability to improve over time. Santana, in addition to being young, is playing out of position, so I would give him some leeway as well. Sam Fuld was good enough, but he's gone now. Jordan Schafer has been a step above embarrassing, but has still missed his fair share of plays. Otherwise, the Twins have trotted out a series of players that have no business in a major league outfield. Some of it goes back to that dead horse we've all been beating on - signing Jason Bartlett. But the personnel was bad even without that decision. The Twins really need to see some improvement from the current group of young guys (Hicks, Arcia, Santana) and they probably need to add some more talent, preferably players that have ML experience playing outfield defense.
  4. Re: Victorino - I think he might still have something left in the tank, but to me, he has to be considered a 4th outfielder at best until he can prove he's recovered from his surgery and hasn't regressed. I'd still advocate making a run at Melky Cabrera or Yasmani Tomas before trying to sign Shane Victorino.
  5. Remember that incident towards the start of the season between Jed Lowrie and Houston Manager Bo Porter? I wonder if there was some residual resentment from Porter to even be in a shift in the first place - that seeing that Lowrie even had the option to bunt against a shift was melting Porter's brain a bit. Like, why are we shifting on this guy, he's not Big Papi, or even Joe Mauer? He wouldn't be bunting if we were playing straight up. The message being sent from Front Office and/or from the Stats guys in the front office down to the field must be a delicate balance of saying that they've done the work, crunched the numbers, found what will help the team be more successful but not "we know what is best for you" or "Trust us, we're smarter than you". (not that I think they would say something like that or think that, but a manager might feel like that is the subtext) The on field staff has to be willing to trust that making changes to what they've always done is in the best interests of the team's success (and by extension, the security of their own jobs).
  6. Either way, I hope Castillo has the good sense to send boxes of cigars to Puig, Cespedes, and Abreu - if any of those three had busted, my guess is that Castillo would not be making anywhere near this kind of $$$
  7. False, he does all his firing of things through the internet at the public library.
  8. To be fair - $70+ MM for a guy that's never played a MLB game is pretty gutsy. I think the Twins can retroactively kick themselves for not being bidders for Cespedes or Puig, who signed for quite a bit less than Castillo did and were arguably better prospects. Yasmani Tomas is the next big Cuban Free Agent coming up, if the Twins want a chance at signing him, they may need to dig into their pockets a bit. I don't think the Twins' are all that risk-averse on the international market - they just haven't been interested in paying these large contracts so far. Kepler, Thorpe, and Sano are three recent examples of the Twins being players on the international market. Nishioka as well, the Twins weren't the only team trying to sign him. Nishi didn't work out, though it's possible that he would be on his way to the majors this fall if the Twins had tried to start him in AA and have him earn his promotions.
  9. Yes, can he repeat it next year? That's the burning question for all of the Twins' bright spots. Who is going to regress (*cough Kurt Suzuki *cough) and who is going to get better / maintain their 2014 success? My Spring Training Optimist thinks that Gibson have more good/great starts than clunkers next year, and be the Good #2 / #3 starter behind Hughes. I still am really hoping for the Twins to take a shot at adding another front end starter to the rotation as well(though it would fly in the face of logic and past history).
  10. Rusney to Red Sox in a record deal (for a Cuban defector) $72MM! http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/08/rusney-castillo-on-track-for-six-year-72mm-deal-with-red-sox.html
  11. The first time the Twins were rumored to be trying to acquire Hughes was back when they were looking for a trade partner for Santana - wasn't a Hughes / Melky / Ian Kennedy package mentioned? That does seem like a lifetime ago. It would be interesting if the Twins do manage to go after Cabrera in the offseason and end up with 2 of the guys they might have acquired for Johan so long ago.
  12. Hughes would need to average 7.5 Ks over 7 starts to get 200.5 Ks. 148 currently, 52 to go would be 7 X 7.42. if he gets 6 starts, he'll need to average 8.7 Ks if he gets 5 starts, he'll need to average 10.4 Ks For the season he's averaging 5.6 Ks per start, so not very likely, but he's going to be closer than most Twins' pitchers have been.
  13. Bert Blyleven in 1986 was the last Twins' RHP to get more than 200 Ks in one season. Bert, Dean Chance, Camilo Pascual, Dave Boswell, and Walter Johnson (if you include the Senators) are the only RHP in Twins history to get more than 200 Ks in a year. Jim Kaat, Johan, and Liriano are the only LHP to do it.
  14. The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind. The answer is blowin' in the wind.
  15. I think the Twins should be in the market for another big time starter - Lester, Scherzer, James Shields. I agree that the way the Twins will move forward is by having players that are better than good. The players on the team right now are mostly "good" right now. The Pitchers have been below league average, with one exception. Hughes has been fantastic, and has been the Twins' Ace this year. But for a team that wants to play in the postseason, Hughes is a #2 or #3 starter on a playoff team. I think the Twins can build around Hughes and Gibson. May and Meyer could be the future, or they could be league average. I don't expect either of them to be better in 2015 than Gibson has been this year. They most likely will need some more time facing major league talent before they are at their peak performance. I think the Twins need to add another starter, and the floor should be one of the big three. Otherwise, the Twins are not making the playoffs until at least 2016.
  16. Dozier loves the high heat - maybe he's a bit fatigued, he was getting around on high fastballs for quite a few of his homers early in the year.
  17. Where would the Twins be - probably still last place in the AL Central... That was a little tongue-in-cheek, I think Hughes gives the Twins the closest thing they've had to an Ace since Santana left. I think he might get 6 or even 7 more starts, assuming he goes every 5th game. 36 / 5 is 7.2 - I'd still think 175-190 is a more likely total for his season.
  18. Nice win today - any time you get a strong seven innings from your starter, then a quick 8th and 9th from your bullpen is a good day.
  19. He seems a bit faster than a man his size should be...
  20. no t.v. is a bummer - I would have loved to see Vargas getting an infield single!
  21. Yeah, I think Suzuki has another bonus on the line with his next game played and then another if he makes it to 115 starts: http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/08/13/twinsights-kurt-suzuki-collects-first-part-potential-500000-bonus-package/ On Monday night against the Astros, Suzuki made his 85th start of the season behind the plate, triggering a $100,000 bonus. He would receive the same amount with his 95th start, followed by bonuses of $150,000 apiece for making 105 and 115 starts.
  22. Nice finish for Hughes, I'm guessing he's done for the day.
  23. Nice job Plouffe! EDIT: bah, bad baserunning though....
  24. Huh. ESPN only let Cleveland have two outs in that last inning. was the third out on the bases somewhere?
