  1. Despite the prospects the Twins are expecting to start arriving in 2014, Ryan sounds like he's going to punt the season again. The Twins really have no one to trade of significant value and Ryan isn't going to sign any major pieces in free agency. If the Twins are really building something special in the next couple years like they want us to believe, then maybe they should spend some of their burgeoning cash pile to bring in a good pitcher on a multi-year deal that can help not only in 2014 but also onward after that. Worst case scenario, the prospects all flame out and the Twins are still a marginally better team than 2013. There's a possibility that they could always flip said pitcher in a trade anyway.
  2. Souhan could have written this article in September of 2011 or 2012, dragged it out of mothballs, changed the date and a few relevant player names, and reposted it.
  3. I think that the "Twins Way" didn't start out as an organizational philosophy, rather it developed around the players the Twins had in the early 2000s. The Twins Way was what those players did well. The Twins didn't have much for power arms or bats, so we celebrated hitting spots and not issuing walks, and hitting the ball to the opposite field for singles. Good defense wasn't unique to the Twins, but when you're an otherwise unspectacular team, you promote your strengths I guess. Later I think it became an expectation that Twins rookies were supposed to live up to, which may or may not have fit their individual talents.
  4. I'm not convinced that Rosario, by himself, nets the Twins a pitcher who can improve their rotation right now. If I'm wrong, and a #2 who can step into the rotation immediately can be had for Rosario, go ahead and trade him. I don't want the Twins to trade him for another 3,4, or 5 guy. That's trading from a position of weakness to bolster a position of strength. If you trade Rosario for a pitching prospect who profiles better than that but won't be able to step in immediately, what's the harm in waiting?
  5. I'd wait another season before pulling the trigger on a trade like this. For one, Rosario probably isn't going to sniff the majors next year anyway, so there's no rush to trade him. Second, I'd like to see Dozier put together a good year in 2014 before locking him in.
  6. I get that Ryan has to say things like "pretty darn good pitcher" and "meaningful games in September" when the season is still fresh. But now that the season is over, these comments bother me as well. Honestly I'd rather he said that KC and Pelf have been disappointing, because it sounds here like he's hoping that fans don't remember the line he toed originally on these guys.
  7. I didn't read that one. Was it underneath Sid's campaigning for the Twins to bring in Robb Quinlan?
  8. $70 mil. One more Correia-type and a Pelfrey-type injury reclamation project or two.
  9. It's true that Ryan will have a lot of money to work with... but I'll believe it when I see it. I could see potentially another trade for a pitching prospect, and another Pelfrey-type signing, but I've been a Twins fan for too long to believe that Ryan will sign a starting pitcher who is better than a Correia or Pavano.
  10. I find it ironic that, in baseball, sportsmanship is maintained by throwing at batters.
  11. Munson was with the Tigers for a while, then I think the Twins had him on a minor league deal for a minute. Fields was bad for the White Sox for a couple years not too long ago.
  12. I get that they've been good value for what the Twins paid them. They would have been better signings for a team that needed to round out an already good rotation. For the Twins, the upgrade from Walters and Worley to Pelfrey and Correia is significant, but not enough to make the team a contender.
  13. How do you figure? Correia's been OK, Pelfrey's been better lately. But did the Twins really need to spend money on OK pitchers if they were going to lose 90+ games anyway? It looks like a sunk cost to me.
  14. Don't move Rosario from 2B. Even if you're sold on Dozier as a long term building block at 2B, the Twins already have loads of outfield prospects. You'd be limiting infield options and compounding a logjam in the outfield.
  15. Realistically, it's more like Willingham for Casilla.
  16. The only reason for him to play at all is to maybe sell a few more tickets while the team plays out the string. If he comes back at all this season it should be as a 1B or DH only.
  17. He DID trade Ramos for Capps, and Hardy for nothing. Smith did make some good moves, though. He traded Pino for Pavano, Gomez for Hardy, and Mulvey for Rauch. He also signed Miguel Sano. Smith was not a good GM, but he takes way too much of the blame for the current state of affairs IMO.
  18. Admittedly I haven't seen Sano play 3rd more than a couple clips. When you're comparing him to Plouffe, though, it seems like Trevor's fielding % is inflated a bit. He doesn't get hit with an error for being out of position (which he is frequently).
  19. Hendriks reminds me of Slowey. Good enough control to baffle AAA hitters, but not enough "stuff" to get away with mistakes to major leaguers.
  20. I agree with the OP that the lack of fundamentals the last three years has been alarming. That's not a matter of talent. Another point I'd raise is that, despite what we hear of Gardy "just not having the talent" to win, that isn't what the Twins were saying at the beginning of the year. Ryan said he wanted to see improvement, and it's just not been there. Letting Gardy off the hook for lack of talent is moving the goalposts forward.
  21. This Mauer concussion thing makes me think the Twins need to work him at 1B more and less behind the plate. That means not much room for another left-handed hitting first baseman.
  22. I want zero tolerance for this kind of behavior. Most jobs are competitive. This shouldn't be brushed aside because it's pro sports.
  23. I don't understand how anyone can support Mientkiewicz and his childish, unprofessional actions. What's so awesome about physical violence? Honestly I don't think his suspension is punishment enough.
  24. Carroll "love"? I think that's a little too strong. Carroll was tolerated because he was used appropriately. I've seen more Punto jerseys than Carroll jerseys.
  25. I didn't find "Burger King coupons" anywhere as an option.
