  1. He's been out of MLB for a while I think, but Bert always used to say "Ben Broushard" instead of "Ben Broussard".
  2. I'm not sure why the Twins were in such a rush to promote Burnett. He certainly got more opportunities than his performance merited. That said, it's disappointing to give up on a 25 year old player. I don't think he'll be great, but he might have been better if the Twins had stashed him at AAA the last couple seasons.
  3. I don't think the Twins ever disclosed what their budget was, or whether or not they were over budget during Smith's tenure.
  4. Why does it seem like the Twins will be more likely to trade Willingham than Morneau? Does the extra contract year increase Willingham's trade value? I get that Morneau's been hurt a lot, but Willingham doesn't exactly have a sparkling medical record either. I think the Twins want to keep "their guys" and Morneau is one of us while Willingham isn't.
  5. If the success or failure of a team could be completely out of a manager's control (like Rosenthal implies here), I could be a MLB manager. Anyone could. There would be no reason to sign a Ron Gardenhire or a Buck Showalter because their net effect on the team is so minimal. As unfair as it may be, the win/loss record is inextricable from the manager and ultimately that's what they are held accountable for.
  6. I really don't care about Hicks's arbitration clock. If the Twins want to keep him around, they will, and the difference in cost will be minimal. I agree with Bonnes that if TR wanted to prove to the veterans that 2013 wasn't a rebuilding year he should have spent some more money...
  7. Gardenhire won't want to hurt Parmy's confidence by benching him against lefties.
  8. Rosenthal says the last two seasons aren't Gardenhire's fault. That logic wouldn't save a manager's job in any other market. Even if the organizational collapse didn't have everything to do with Gardenhire, it did have something to do with him.
  9. If it looks like it's going to take more than a 2 year deal to bring him back for 2014, I say trade him at the deadline. Honestly I think that Morneau having a big season could be a bad thing if the Twins sign him to a big new deal and he goes all Travis Hafner. I don't think he's part of the Twins' next contending team.
  10. What are they projecting for Escobar and Florimon?
  11. If true this is very interesting. Is it possible that the sinker is a risky pitch to throw? Or is it that sinkerball pitchers usually favor a slider over a curveball? You don't hear of many sinker/curve pitchers but you hear of plenty of sinker/slider types.
  12. Actually, Capps was the closer until June.
  13. There's always angry fans of every team. This is not unique to the Twins. I don't understand Reusse's point.
  14. But can Hicks bunt?
  15. When Mauer hits a ground ball on the right side, it's usually sharp enough that any runner going from 1st to 2nd is going to get doubled up.
  16. I think I'd rather have a slow guy who can get on base and risk the double play than a speedy guy with questionable on base skills.
  17. Whoever is the opening day CF will hit leadoff. Gardy constructs lineups on autopilot- hence Redmond batting third, Tolbert batting second and Gomez leading off.
  18. They may be twins, but they're also yankees, and I have a hunch they may also be athletics.
  19. I'd have to buy season tickets? No thanks. I think I'd rather drive out to Cleveland to see a game.
  20. We'll have to wait and see how it works for Cleveland. I'd certainly be more likely to buy a ticket to a Twins game if the concession prices were lower.
  21. Roenicke hasn't yet messed with Gardy's cherry juice?
  22. I'm not a big believer in players getting "broken" by being called up too soon. If their confidence is completely shattered by scuffling at the major league level, they're probably not a long-term building block anyway. Even established players will slump. In a perfect world, none of Dozier, Escobar, or Florimon would be even considered as a starting middle infielder for a major league team right now. But the Twins have made their bed, evidently because they think Dozier is closer than you think.
  23. Gardenhire favorites Punto, Tolbert, and Casilla couldn't play themselves out of a spot no matter how hard they tried.
  24. Probably when Gardenhire is no longer the manager.
