Minnesota Twins Still Looking to Reinforce Bullpen
tony&rodney replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Conversations should be had on many fronts. Why limit the ask? For example, San Diego is quite unlikely to trade Mason Miller but there is nothing hurt by having a five minute chat about the possible. Houston might not be willing to move Jeremy Pena but, again, I would reach out and ask. Toronto may be reasonable about trading Gausman. He usually gives a team solid innings. There are a bunch of possibilities and it does seem like the Twins could be busy before the deadline gong. -
Thank you for the writeup. I have been a fan of Festa and his road back to MLB could be difficult. Hoping for the best.

This is right on. It isn't reasonable for most people to spend the time to watch minor league baseball and so fans will watch a highlight or look over stats to make an attempt to understand how good any prospect is as a player. The problem there is a lack of context. Watching the games one can see the setup, swing, and decisions a player makes in action. The same goes for base-running and in the field, although glovework is sometimes more difficult to view due to the video angles. In person is easily the best view. Talent plays. This is why any trades need to focus on talent, even to the point of seeming to overpay at times.

Minter will fit into the role Banda served. It is a decent addition. One wonders if the Twins are talking with Preller (SDP). The bullpen has been identified as the weak link for quite some time but the results in the last month for the pen are good. Many of the arms that were flammable are no longer on the roster. I'm still down for one addition but more concerned about the bats.

I'm watching the games and seeing how he looks and comparing that to his strong play before he was injured. Right now Culpepper is swinging at a few pitches he was spitting at earlier and he swung through a few middle middle gifts. He could tune in quickly .... we shall see. Kreidler is the better player at this time. Forget the stats and highlights and watch the games if you really want to see how Culpepper (or Jenkins) looks right now. FWIW, Sabato continues to totally mash mistakes. I doubt MLB pitchers put the ball on the tee very often but Sabato is not missing when the pitchers go middle middle.

The irrational jabs against the Pohlads are pointless and off base. There were mistakes made, mostly comments that were poorly framed and ill-timed. The collapse of the regional networks hurt small and medium market clubs. I'm not sure how the loss of $30-50 million in revenue can be ignored. The player acquisition decisions are like 99.9% on the front office. The manager and coaching staff do not pick the team. They do communicate their thoughts. Neither of Jenkins nor Culpepper are ready right now for regular playing time. It does seem possible that they are called up in August dependent on their play and the needs of the MLB club. If anything, Tom Pohlad is probably wondering about them too. He isn't likely to push forward comments and sound like a fool. The Twins are being managed and run differently this year. Perhaps not to the level many would desire but there has been change.

Culpepper looks a little rusty right now at the dish. I'm sure the Twins are monitoring his play.

Apparently you didn't read what I posted. Yes, give me Alvarez but we have Bell. He takes decent PA and he is who the front office signed. Well-liked and popular, Bell is the DH when Buxton or Jeffers are not. We don't get to pick the team. Of course we want a .900+ OPS, but the Twins could do worse; Bell is adequate. I'm especially glad that Bell is not the everyday first baseman too. Sign a guy and they are going to play. A ton of people run down the RBI stat and it is true that players cannot get many RBIs without guys on base in front of them. The Twins could really use any of the players that are on the leader board for RBIs.

An established hitter would be nice. Who is available and what can we send in a transaction?

For sure a gamble type deal. 50-50.

When Buxton went on the IL, someone needs to play centerfield. Roden, Martin, Larnach, Clemens, and Keaschall are the choices, unless the Twins use Gray at shortstop and Kreidler in center. Now, maybe the best option was to keep Outman but it sure seemed like people were done with him. Tough decisions get made when the club moved on from James Outman. There are consequences that are bound to occur with any of the guys on the roster playing out there unless it is Kreidler but we already know that 2-3 balls per game would slip through with Gray and more with Lee. Life is tough.

Worth a phone call/text. What do the Reds want for Greene? Alan Roden, Emmanuel Rodriguez, Dasan Hill, and Quentin Young enough? Or do they want MLB pitchers, like Zebby Matthews?
-
Prielipp isn't going anywhere. I also don't think Connor is shut down until the Twins are done. They will continue to give him longer between starts and watch his pitch counts and the stresses in innings. Of course that puts further stress on the bullpen and so a guy like Detmers or Emerson would be nice. However, neither of those guys go long in most games. Gausman will throw more innings if that is the goal.

Apparently people have not noticed that Bell is the leader on this team. He is not just popular but is also adequate as a DH. Yes, I want Yordan Alvarez but Bell isn't going anywhere this season. Sorry to those people who think he is an anchor. FWIW, I was not pleased at all that the Twins signed Bell, but they did and now he is on the roster. I will agree that there should be a better DH but Bell it is.

FWIW .... The last five outings have Prielipp with 28.2 IP and 13 ER with Detmers at 25.1 IP and 13 ER. Prielipp is just getting his feet wet and looks pretty good. He is getting stronger recently. I do really like Detmers and am interested in seeing if the Twins can acquire him. I would not trade Prielipp and the Twins agree.

I'm not sure what you have in mind but Ryan Kreidler is not expendable until someone else comes along, either via trade (unlikely) or next season (more likely). A good, at least decent, shortstop is a necessity. Nobody else on the roster can play the position. FWIW, Vahn Lackey walked in his first PA as a pro and stole second base. Lacket looks big.

A couple of people have mentioned this. It is an issue for every team in baseball as a fair statement. The Twins are generally pitching very well. The offense has struggled mightily since the break. The defense while far better than earlier in the year is still suspect, having given up 5 runs just in the recently finished KC series. To be fair, there were a few nice plays, by Clemens, Jackson, and Kriedler today. We are all left guessing as to what transpires in the next few days much less the next couple of weeks. My best guess is that we see a couple of guys (K. Culpepper and W. Jenkins) from AAA if they can prove themselves a bit more in the next two weeks. What a sweet win today though. No worries for now.

Fun to watch the first guy leaping over the dugout rail - Josh Bell, hollering, screaming, and jumping around. What an ending. -

That's baseball. Failure, failure, failure, and then success. Twins win another series. Go Twins. -

Plenty of time left in the season. The bats need to turn a corner though. Since the break the hits have been tough to find. The defense has also regressed a bit, which is expected with Buxton out. This KC series has put faulty defense on full display. Arguably Bradley should have escaped without giving up a run. Ryan was shaky but only gave up two legitimate runs. Ober gave up the two run homer today. That makes only 4 earned runs in the series. Who is even available as a bat? -

There should be enough demand for Jeffers that the Twins make the decision to move him.
