  1. I don't question Walker's work ethic. I'm sure he'd rather be an all around great hitter. But there is something missing from his skill set in terms of picking up pitch location and movement. I'm skeptical it's fixable, based on other prospects with similar issues.
  2. I don't agree with Kepler or Walker being up, considering they are ranked fairly high to begin with. Kepler is a corner outfielder who doesn't walk or hit for power. Walker is basically a home run derby player more than a baseball player. I do think Duffey's stock has risen, though Seth had him a little high after last season so I don't know that he should really be much higher even with improvement.
  3. I'm mostly a skeptic because too many guys (rotation and bullpen) are muddling through without really looking sharp. I do think there is better depth than in the past few years, and that may well prevent things from getting totally out of hand if a few guys implode within a short period of time. There is some upside, but there is more probability on the regression side at this point.
  4. I've always liked Berrios more than Meyer as a prospect. Starters need to have command. Flame throwers are frequently overrated as prospects. Meyer's stock was pretty high entering this season, and rightly so, but he has struggled and the fact is that he's never shown a consistent ability to throw strikes, even against over-matched hitters.
  5. I agree, demoting Arcia at this point is a beyond absurd notion. It's so ludicrous that I'm not even worried the Twins will do it.
  6. Well, so end my increasingly unhinged complaints regarding his AAA tenure. I'm optimistic. I really like the way he responded to not making the team out of ST. Playing for Molitor instead of Gardy is a huge upgrade that can only help matters.
  7. You're giving the Twins a lot of credit for plans that almost certainly don't exist, but even so... Hicks is not just succeeding at AAA. Factoring in his position, he is the best player in the International League. He's utterly dominating the league offensively, with a RC+ over 180. A couple weeks isn't going to make any difference in his 'mental makeup' or whatever other dubious factors are supposedly keeping him in Rochester. He's just too talented for that level of competition. If his intangibles are really that bad, the Twins should trade him. If they aren't, he should be with the Twins. Either way, Rochester is pointless.
  8. The more likely explanation is that his mechanics are out of whack, which wouldn't exactly be surprising. I'd be worried, except I never had high hopes for him in the first place.
  9. Definitely better than the stretch they had in '39-'45. It translates into hitting like an AL relief pitcher. Walker still has the same issues that led to him going in the 3rd round of the draft despite huge power. The light-bulb will either click (10% chance?) or won't, but he's not playing in a way that can translate to MLB in any capacity. He needs to figure out how to leverage his physical hitting ability into a legitimate, balanced approach at the plate.
  10. Suzuki's defense continues to decline, he was always a bad pitch framer, and his offense comes and goes. He's definitely not 'good'... adequate, at best, and quite possibly less.
  11. Hicks clearly can play in AAA - it's just a waste of everyone's time to keep him there. There is zero question that Hicks is better than Schafer, and it isn't even close. Either the Twins should upgrade their own CF situation, or they should trade Hicks to someone else who will.
  12. Schafer is a bad centerfielder. He shouldn't be in the big leagues.
  13. True, but this situation is a little different in that he might run out of rotation spots to fill with underachieving veterans.
  14. Meyer doesn't have #1 starter potential. He doesn't have the command or a 3rd pitch. Hard-throwing righthanders with a slider aren't particularly rare anymore.
  15. The Twins bullpen has issues as it is. They are carrying a Rule V pick in Graham that Molitor (understandably) doesn't want to use in high pressure situations. Adding Meyer, who has fallen apart as a pitcher, would be a horrible move unless it was to replace Graham. Even then, it doesn't make any sense to me - send him to extended spring training or the Miracle if you want a change of scenery. Now, this is of course academic - there is no chance the Twins would even entertain the idea of promoting Meyer while he is disintegrating. The question is how many more starts they give him before moving him to the pen or DLing him.
  16. There are always non-prospects that can be bumped. Wheeler in AAA (LOOGY at best), Peavey at AA, etc. You're not missing anything, he's not really a prospect.
  17. Ownership wants a winning team that brings in revenue. If Nolasco is holding the Twins back, TR has no choice but to move on.
  18. Hopefully he's not hurt. He should certainly move the AAA bullpen at this point... best case scenario is that his mechanics are out of whack.
  19. One possible counter-point is that the Twins signed Santana to a long-term deal despite also having some starter prospects close to the Majors. Assuming Gibson and May stay in the rotation, that leaves zero spots until 2018. Now, obviously pitchers get hurt, but will they really want to send a guy like Berrios up and down as an injury replacement for a long period of time, especially if he's their best starter by then? Will they trade away a cheap young starter like May? The Twins may be hopeful but they aren't going to let Nolasco drag the team down for multiple seasons... they won't even tolerate it for the rest of this season if he can't be at least passable.
  20. Cameron Booser's stock is shooting up rapidly, but he's only in low-A... sometime next year is a possibility.
  21. Not that it diminishes the fact Berrios pitched very well, but McDaniel was already very high on Berrios per his pre-season prospect rankings... he ranked him 24th overall. There could be. Hitting fewer fly balls should result in a higher batting average but less power, generally speaking.
  22. The Twins aren't stuck with Nolasco at all. They can tell him to get lost at any time... the money is already gone. Of course, practically speaking the Twins will give Nolasco a lot of leeway, but ultimately how many games do they want him to lose on top of the money he's eating?
  23. Colabello crushes mistakes but struggles when MLB pitchers execute. It's a great story but the Twins shouldn't be criticized for their handling of him. Even putting aside his MLB performance in 2013 and 2014, the Twins have young guys they need to play in LF and DH... there just wasn't a role for him with this club.
  24. It makes no sense to move Plouffe off third base for Sano. Plouffe's improved defense there has made him a very solid player... a lot of that goes out the window as an outfielder. So the choice should be between moving Sano to a different position and trading Plouffe. Since I don't see Sano as a long-term third baseman, I think it makes more sense to consider moving Sano to the outfield until taking over for Mauer at 1B, assuming Sano gets back on track of course. The only issue there is that the Twins love Rosario, so there may not be an opening. Another possibility is that if Vargas doesn't put it together, to have Arcia and Sano split time between OF and DH, with Sano spelling Mauer at 1B also.
  25. Good write-up. May's stock had fallen quite a bit by the time the Twins acquired him, so even though he was somewhat well known as a prospect, there's no doubt his turnaround is surprising. He deserves a lot of credit for making adjustments.
