  1. Clutch hitting isn't a skill, it's luck. Nor are the Twins winning because of "speed." The issue is probably more Ryan than Molitor though... it's hard to have a real DH with 13 pitchers.
  2. They're punting DH because Ryan is the only person on the planet to think that A. Stauffer is good and B. you should have 13 pitchers.
  3. Not really. He struck out 1/3 of the hitters he faced in the inning.
  4. I know, but at the same time, Molitor is being told that Stauffer belongs and should be pitching. The Twins have been in some close games and in this one the starter left very early with injury. If Molitor hides him too well, he'll never be rid of Stauffer.
  5. This isn't on Molitor. Ryan forced Molitor to use Stauffer... 100% of the responsibility is on TR.
  6. I know it seems really low at first, but I don't think its an unfair assessment. Even if he was healthy and pitching well, there would be a high level of risk just based on how often young pitchers get hurt and/or go off the rails. Stewart still has all those future risks, except they are magnified by the fact he already has injury and performance problems. It is very, very rare for a pitcher to have both of those issues for an extended period of time in A-ball and then go on the MLB success. Maybe 5% is a little low because Stewart could wind up doing OK in the bullpen. But unless you can point me to prospects that had the same issues and turned into good MLB starters, I'm going to be skeptical.
  7. It's weird how Toronto was able to hit Stauffer's 88 mph fastballs down the middle of the plate. Thank goodness the Twins' GM is a savvy scout who knows how to put a bullpen together.
  8. The Twins did Santana no favors by mishandling him last year - he should have been playing SS, either in the Majors or AAA, which I thought was obvious at the time and really a quite inexcusable player development error by management. Having said that, Santana is so erratic that I doubt he will ever amount to anything. I'm in favor of sending him to AAA, which also would keep Escobar out of LF and DH, where he is a huge liability. Polanco isn't ready offensively or defensively. He should spend all year in AA and start next year in AAA.
  9. I don't think it's an overreaction. Hitters in A-ball really aren't that good for the most part. Someone of Stewart's ability should be able to handle them better than he has. There's nothing special about the fact that he's 20 or played football in high school... most top high school athletes play multiple sports, nor is 20 especially young for a top prospect to be in the FSL. The fact he can't stay healthy is another huge negative, not something that should comfort us with respect to his struggles. As markos laid out, it is exceedingly rare for a pitcher to start out like Stewart and amount to anything. Young as he is, a pitcher that can't strike anyone out or stay healthy at age 20 is a massive longshot to have any kind of success in the Majors... 5% might be generous at this point.
  10. Stewart's health issues could be at least somewhat responsible for his struggles. But still, he's 63rd out of 66 FSL pitchers with 30 or more IP in K%. And he didn't strike anyone out last year either. At this point, the odds are overwhelmingly in favor of him being a bust. It is what it is.
  11. College coaches can be weird. Illinois is 48-8-1, so their coach must have some idea what he's doing, but I don't think it means much in terms of Jay's potential. Dillon Tate wasn't in the rotation going into UC-Santa Barbara's season until one of their starters got hurt.
  12. Bregman is nowhere near Tulo-level potential with the bat. He could be solid for a SS, but he's not a middle of the order hitter. Nor is he particularly great defensively. Not that I would mind the Twins picking him, since I don't think there are great high-upside alternatives. Tate is a fastball-slider guy with below average command, which makes him overrated as a starter prospect. Tucker is a corner outfielder, setting a high bar for how much he would have to hit. I do like Jay a lot but his misuse at Illinois has introduced a risk factor, in that he may not hold up as a starter.
  13. Are you talking about the club carrying 13 pitchers, including Tim Stauffer? The idea that the Twins will have an overhauled roster a month from now is just... odd and, well, plainly false. That the Twins will regress is the only possible conclusion any knowledgeable observer could draw. OPS for and against gives you the exact same reality of how lucky the Twins have been. BaseRuns takes those hits, walks, etc., and calculates an expected run total, which is more handy than looking at a team's AVG/OBP/SLG slash line.
  14. This is the latest canary to go into the coalmine and die a rather unfortunate death. Something has to be seriously broken within management for this situation to persist, where a $2 million reliever is somehow ruining the bench and degrading the bullpen at the same time. It isn't a case of understandable disagreement - this is pure, irrational error on the part of the Twins. All along I've worried about the rebuild, because I rarely have seen organizations in any field where the little things were totally botched but the big picture went really well. And there is zero reason to think anything is going to change.
  15. There's no excuse for roster mismanagement like this.
  16. The Twins need to figure out what they have in the guys that already performed in the minor leagues. Burying Arcia - an above average career MLB hitter - in AAA would make no sense at all. May as well just trade him at that point. On the other hand, Rosario needs to be in the minors working on his plate discipline. One walk and sixteen strikeouts is not a viable approach at the plate.
  17. Well it makes sense if they don't actually read him.
  18. Isn't this a little weird from a Molitor - Ryan standpoint though? How much say the manager has is frequently a murky topic, with the Twins and many other clubs... Molitor doesn't want 13 pitchers and almost certainly did not want Stauffer, either so soon or ever. But yet there he is. If Stauffer remains in the bullpen when Fien comes back and another reliever is removed from the 25-man roster to get to 12... that would basically be Ryan ordering Molitor to use Stauffer, right? It could be limited to low-leverage situations, of course, but still. That would be a worrisome dynamic.
  19. Tate might be a reliever too. I'm not real excited with any of the college pitchers.
  20. Eades is benefiting from the pitcher-friendly FSL... his peripherals are atrocious. They weren't particularly good in college either, which confused me about the pick at the time.
  21. Really? Parmelee, Gutierrez, Wimmers, Michael... not to mention Hicks, who is still a question mark.
  22. I still don't get it - why do random people have to meet your standard of a courteous tone when discussing the Twins? If they are factually correct, don't make unfair personal attacks, etc., then I am failing to see the grounds for complaint. If you don't like a writer's style, don't read him or her, whether it's for snarkiness, or being boring, or any other reason.
  23. No you don't, and I think Kepler can continue to succeed at AA without really changing that. But it's probably a good idea not to get into bad habits.
  24. The Twins' record clearly exceeds their underlying individual performances. That's what Keith Law and others have said, which are facts that have been discussed plenty here. Why should a non-Twins fan be giddy about the team? Equating the mindset of Twins fans to analysts or commentators doesn't make any sense. The perspective is completely different. It would be one thing if the sources mentioned above bent over backwards to compliment every team other than the Twins, but that's obviously not the case. There are a variety of perspectives, as it should be... the victimhood routine is a tiresome one in the pro sports world.
  25. The Stauffer thing is just the Twins reflexively deferring to veteran players - he's paid so little that I don't think the money really suffices as an explanation. And since his contract includes incentives, dumping him saves money at this point. But since Molitor has shown zero interest in using him... it's a weird situation. Clearly he prefers Tonkin and Pressley. Would Ryan ignore Molitor and demote one of them instead of getting rid of Stauffer? It's kind of sad that's even possible.
