Everyone talks about how bad the speed is or was in the OF. But we traded that speed to fix a more urgent need....Starting Pitching Span and Revere were plenty fast but we needed 5 starting pitchers not just 1 or 2 and we only had a strong maybe in Gibson in the pipeline. Hicks also failed in 2 attempt to establish himself and this last offseason we almost had an agreement with Raj Davis till he signed with Detroit. so trades, failures (both in development and FA), and injuries (Buxton) Kept us from having the fastest OF the last few years.

I just posted this is another thread but thought it could use some discussion on this board. When comparing this 90 loss team to last 90 loss team lets compare the appropriate stats. we don't compare pitchers by wins and losses anymore. Why are we comparing the teams record the same way as old school non-stat guys do? In 2013 our run differential was -174. This year before todays game we are at -68. That's over a 100 run improvement which is huge. And now we are acclimating our core for the future compared to using aging veterans to try to look like we have talent. That is how we should compare this team to last years. Which is the better way to compare 2013 to 2014? Run differential? Won - Loss records?

That is how we should compare this team to last years. I also want to mention time t takes to rebuild a franchise. There are a few teams with vast wealth who have been able to retool on the fly like Boston and that has more to do with their trade with Los Angeles to clear contracts to give them flexibility. But the Royals took 29 years to get to the playoffs. (So I guess the trade was worth it for the Royals to go out and get Shields since it ended in a playoff appearance.). Pirates took from 1992 to 2013. We are going on year 5. And I feel pretty confident things are bout to go our way. The Tigers are an aging team and the Indians do not have enough talent in their system. The Royals are in the same boat as they loose Shields and are a bat short. (Though they do have pitching talent coming). The Yanks are about to embark on a 5 year rebuild too as they are saddled with big contracts for the next few years and without a lot of talent in their system.

My Trade Targets
Brandon commented on RealTwinsFan357's blog entry in Random Thoughts About Baseball
Your pitching list is nice Cincinnati has pitchers to deal too as they have several who are 1 year from FA. I think Boston would deal Jackie Bradley Jr. a little easier then Mookie Betts but I bet either could be had or something of value. -
A Realistic 2015 Minnesota Twins Roster, Staff and Payroll
Brandon commented on GoGonzoJournal's blog entry in Minnesota Foul Play-by-play
I think we'd start off with 12 pitches and 13 position players especially if we get another innings eating SP. So that means Nunez can stay. Also Sano and Meyer will not start on the bench/ bullpen. they can go to the minors to start the season and get called when there is an opportunity. There is a decent chance Swarzak is let go. He is a gamer so they may keep him too. He's willing to pitch where asked. and still not too expensive. The Twins may also sign a LF instead of relying on Hicks and/ or Santana moves to LF so Escobar can start at SS. I also think Parmelee is a solid bat off the bench. He is not the starting OF/1B we all want but he appears to be close to a Randy Bush clone on offense with less OPS of coarse. And lastly. I bet the Twins trade for a SP instead of signing one.- 12 comments

Mackey: The Deterioration of the Twins
Brandon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The down turn started before Blll Smith. The last few drafts before Ryan stepped down were terrible starting the decline of our Minor leagues. They didn't d much better when Bill Smith took over but they did sign some Foreign Players to minor league contracts who are either up are top prospects to help make up for the bad drafts. But Bill also had the distinction of having to trade Johan Santana with a no trade clause while loosing Hunter in FA. Then making the trade for Young to replace Hunter forever haunts this team. So with Bill we started loosing the players on the major league roster. By the time Ryan came back we had a bad team with no help in the minors. We now have top minor league system and some help is already up as we also have a top 5 or 6 offense and a solid pen. We have a few pitching prospects who are ready and some surplus players for trade so we are in the best spot we have been in for years. Think about it. If we trade for a solid starter, Nolasco comes back as a .500 pitcher throwing 190 innings and one of May, Meyer, or Millone pan out we should be above .500 next year. Our offense is set to get a boost in the second half next year and so is the OF defense. At least now all that is left is some tweaking and patience. -
Game Thread: Twins v Diamondbacks, 9/24 @ 12:10pm CT
Brandon replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
He was worth over 30 million. that is such a steep discount that even 500k doesn't make a dent into how much of a discount that was. -
Mackey: The Deterioration of the Twins
Brandon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Lets look at this situation from a more realistic expectation situation. The Twins have had 4 loosing seasons since there last winning season. They may have 5. I'll bet anyone here we have a winning season within 6. compare to the Pirates going from 1992 to 2013 before having a winning season or the Royals going 29 seasons from playoff appearance to playoff appearance. Management as a whole is fine and fairly efficient. There are some teams better at winning and building year in and year out. But were not in bad hands. -
I have a contrarian view on this. The Twins offense has been remade and revamped and Buxton and Sano are still on the way. So its only going to get better. The starting rotation is 2 starters deep with a #1 Hughes and a 3/4 starter in Gibson. I suspect the Twins will trade for another pitcher. We have Nolasco as a bounce back candidate who I suspect will have a similar season to Gibson this year and be a .500 pitcher. And we have 3 others with some potential for the 5th spot May, Meyer, and Millone. The bullpen will be average if not above average but not spectacular. That should get us back over .500. Plus I think Detroit is nearing the end of their run with age and FA status affecting their future with a depleted farm system. I think If we are over .500 at the break next year the team will sell tickets. Probably not as many as they would like but I bet they hit close to 2 million. And I bet we are competitive into September.

Twins Top Prospects Part 1: 41-50 (Preliminary)
Brandon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't get too caught up in the numbers outside of the top 10 maybe top 20 because the difference from #40 and #21 is not that great and is subjective to the eye of the beer-holder. Debating who are top 10 prospects makes more sense. I view the top 50 as an opportunity to learn more about our prospects.- 25 replies

Payroll: 2014 and moving forward. Time to examine.
Brandon replied to DocBauer's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I can see a LF signing or another starting pitcher. I also wonder about trading for a starting pitcher instead of signing one. The market is a lot smaller this year and we have pieces to trade for once. I don't see us signing a bullpen arm or CF. I am unconcerned about payroll and more concerned about winning. Payroll is only a concern when it keeps us from getting the players we need to win. -
Ryan: Santana Still Most Athletic Shortstop In System
Brandon replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Santana could be the future LF anyways and may not stay at SS -
Instead of Capps I think the reliever you are referring to is Papelbon and his team friendly contract....
-
Pinto is a solid hitting prospect and Escobar is a solid SS. that right there is a solid package for 1 year of Mike Leake. Adding a reliever or minor league pitcher with potential and or Hicks who still has potential makes it a realistic package. Walker isn't that great of a prospect at this point either so we could include him as an either or.
-
Pinto and/or Hicks and Escobar and maybe a minor league pitcher starter or reliever or Deunsing or Swarzak for a starting pitcher. Hicks would be a throw in for the deal.and I was listing pieces not to include all f those players but most of them.....Cincinnati has several pitchers nearing FA. so I don't really see how it makes sense to trade for one that close to FA unless we could sign to a long term deal or give up pieces we don't need but then why wouldn't we go after longer term assets? The Twins could sign Mike Leake to a 4 year 50 million extention. He seems to be that type of pitcher who is a number 3/4 starter that the Twins covet so much.

Here is my take: Perkins Fien Deunsing (could be good trade candidate not pressing for it) Thielbar Pressley Pelfry or if he doesn't make the cut Tonkin Swarzak or Pino for the long reliever/ emergency starter Achter, Melotakis, Darnell for the 8th reliever. I am not sold on Olivares at this point he could change my mind next spring we'll see.
-
I thought this might be a fun topic since we already have so many options with more on the way. Here is who we have going into the offseason: Perkins Fien Deunsing Thielbar Swarzak Burton Pressley From this group Burton is most likely not coming back and its not because he's that bad of a pitcher but because he is slipping, costs 3.625 million and has a bunch of potential replacements ready to take his place. Not only Burton but there are a few trade candidates as here is who is knocking on the door to the bigs and pitching in Minnesota in September Oliveros Achter Tonkin Darnell Thompson With Pelfry coming back from a second arm surgery and with his repertoire the bullpen may be a good fit for him Pino could be stored there if he doesn't make the rotation Pelfry Pino Here is a list of kids down on the farm with monster arms likely to jump through the system. Could one of these arms start next season with the Twins. Burdi Zack Jones Jake Reed Dallas Gallant Todd Van Steensel Brandon Peterson That's 14 options who have pitched in the majors this season plus several who are fast tracking their way up. Plus there's going to be pitchers I missed or forgot to mention. How will our bullpen shape up to start the season next year and who will return? Who do you see as our top 7 or 8 relievers?
-
Rule number 1 to pitching is you can never have too much. Lets wait and see what the Twins do in the offseason and how things shake out in spring training. I think the bullpen is definitely an option for him and the twins do too. His 3.5 million in incentives are for starting not relieving but the Twins got him for less guaranteed in case they moved him to the pen. I see him currently as a 7th or 8th or 9th starter depending on how you rank Pino and Swarzak. Probably 7th. I think if the Twins sign someone in the offseason he probably starts in the pen.

Winter Meeting Discussions: Improving the Twins
Brandon replied to shs_59's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The management of the team is fine. There is o reason to fire anyone. Maybe the pitching coach but I don't now. The idea of Hunter or Cuddyer is a player on a 1 year deal while the youngster who will play there develops. Who would you rather have in LF Hunter, Cuddyer, or Parmelee? I am ok with Parmelee off of the bench but I do not see him as the starter. We could use one more starter pitcher. otherwise everyone else is either a veteran in place or a young player. -
Peterson Saga Brings Back Memories
Brandon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Its to the point where I am going turn off football for a while. the media circus is too much for me to tolerate. watching the Vikings without Peterson is too. I think this is a case where Peterson thought he was doing right and needs to be corrected and given a chance to see if that takes hold. Wasn't those hits a result of the child endangering another child on a bike? Yes what he did was abusive but Adrian didn't think it was wrong as he thought it fit the punishment based on how he was disciplined growing up. I think there is room here for lieniency If he was a drunk abuser then I get it. punish the guy but he has cooperated and he has been a role model outside of that. so give him a chance to grow as a person. -
Twins/Chattanooga to announce affiliation?
Brandon replied to Steven Buhr's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Well Doug can get promoted to managing in AA now as Chattanooga is closer than New Britain to home if need be. -
Our draft position is better. we are just about locked into the 5th pick provided the Astros don't loose a pick if they have to sign their 5th rounder. That still has to be determined. In all seriousness we are on the verge of a turnaround as the talent has been brought up and put into position to succeed. the question is do we need to sign a starting pitcher this offseason or should we count on Pelfry, Pino, and Millone for the back end of our rotation starters number 4,5,and 6. Nolasco seems to be bouncing back as he has had 4starts in the last 5 be real good and a3.09 era in those starts, including the clunker

Five Twins Rebound Candidates
Brandon replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nolasco has already started his rebound in case it hasn't been noticed he has given up only 3 earned runs in his last 3 starts and has only 1 bad start in his last 5 where his ERA is still 3.09 including that start. so he has been a lot better since coming back from injury it just took 2 starts to warm back up. Dozier has evolved some. The pitchers quit throwing the high fastball to him which has resulted in more doubles than HRs the second half. I do believe he needs to increase his average though but I am more concerned about why he quit running and stealing bases. The next 2 starts will determine where May is really at and if he belongs since he will pitch to 2 contending teams in his last starts of the year. But he does appear to be improving as evidenced by his k and bb ratios since his first start. If Mauer can go back to hitting .320 then we may have an elite offense next year and beyond. If he is at .270 we may have to move him back to C or consider him a part time player if he isn't going to hit 20+ HRs. Jury is still out on Hicks. He seems to want to be a 4th OF more than a starter by the way he's hit so far. And more and more talent is on the way so our time is coming and hopefully soon we can get off of the fire the front office and manager.- 12 replies
