    It does appear that Emma will be eligible for a 4th option year, no matter what happens the rest of this year. He only has ONE year so far in professional baseball where he has more than 90 days an active roster (he could theoretically make that TWO this year), well short of the threshold of FIVE

    Joe Ryan and Trevor Larnach to the Pirates for Seth Hernandez (who doesn't really fit their "Skenes window") Feels like a little bit too much for the Pirates to give up, but that would raise my eyebrows in interest.

    The Twins have done pretty well on trades where they get back a fringe MLB pitcher who was previously a good prospect but has fallen a bit out of favor with their current team. Joe Ryan. Taj Bradley. Mick Abel. If they are going to be sellers, I'd love to see some trades structured like that. Reclamation projects, if you will. But, I'm not sure that's the type of player that they should be targeting if they trade Joe Ryan because they should probably aim higher.

    I need to see a few other things play out before I determine what I think about a non-trade of Jeffers. If, in their minds, they aren't trading Jeffers because they plan on giving him the QO, then I'm totally cool with not trading Jeffers. As part of that thought process, ideally they'd probably trade Caratini. I'm prepared to be happy they don't trade Jeffers, but I'm also prepared to be really annoyed.

    This is all meaningful and I would add that if they were not able to move Correa's $21M off the books, they might have attempted to move different money off the books in the offseason (Ryan, Lopez, Buxton, etc). Correa's $21M staying on the books doesn't magically make ownership OK with a payroll that is $21M higher.

    I agree. Over the last 5 or so trade deadlines I think they have largely done the right things (if we go back further than that I probably disagree). Mahle was the right move but it didn't work out. 2025 largely made sense to me. Other years we've either done really light selling or really light buying, that I mostly agreed with the scale of. Maybe I'm overly worried about what being a seller in 2026 would say about this franchise long term. But.... maybe my concerns are somewhat justified.

    Even with Jeffers and Ryan in 2027 I certainly wouldn't predict 90+ wins, but it's a hell of a lot easier to see a winning team with 90+ win upside if some things go well on the health and prospect side of things.

    If I'm the owner I know that I need to build positive momentum for a franchise that lacks it. There are a variety of ways to accomplish that, but trading Joe Ryan doesn't feel like one of them.

    Your assumptions are built on so much negativity. In my opinion that's a tough way to be a fan. What fun is it to always assume the worst? The bad results you worry about 18 months from now are dictating your current moves and attitude. Call me a Pollyanna, but man, that's just a way more fun way to be a fan. ps. That's $13M mutual option is meaningless. It was a farcical inclusion to "get around" the silly unwritten rule about not negotiating arbitration agreements right up until the arbitration hearing. It has zero affect on anything.

    This isn't me saying "The Twins should never be sellers." I was in favor of almost all of the moves they made last deadline (including Duran). There's a time and a place. But I just don't want to be a franchise that's always selling and I worry that being a seller again in 2026, pushes us down that path.

    My issue is, the "what ifs" can be played in both directions. Not just what if the prospects we get for Joe Ryan turn out to be Kohl Stewarts, but what if having Joe Ryan on the Twins leads to a 90+ win 2027 squad that has a decent chance to come out of the AL? What if trading him now prevents that? What if we trade Joe Ryan and this time next year we aren't quite good enough to go for it and we start doing the "future value" math on Taj? Well... you know,,, he's down to 2.5 years of team control and he's getting expensive. Should we maximize his value? We could probably get some good prospects What if we hadn't traded Duran and Varland last year? What if having them on the team this year instead of the contributions of Abel, Rojas, and Roden would've meant we were 5 games better? Maybe then we're buyers and rather than worrying about adding bullpen depth, we're looking at one big SP move that's going to move us up a notch in the AL power rankings? What if the mindset of being a seller every year in an effort to permanently maximize value turns into a search for a future competitive team that never comes? The "go for it" team never arrives because past selloffs have hamstrung teams that maybe otherwise could have gone for it.

    This dumb fan disagrees. Your argument hinges on the last word.... "nothing" which just isn't true, no matter if you want to look at it literally, or a bit more holistically.

    I don't want to sell in 2026 because I worry about what that does to 2027. As @Cory Engelhardt posted above, it's easy to look at a potential rotation in 2027 that starts with Pablo, Ryan, and Taj and feel pretty good about things, especially knowing the options we have for the 4th and 5th spots. With that rotation in place I want to make decisions for the offense that is going to make us look like a team that should make the playoffs. Jeffers can be a huge part of that. Admittedly I'm stuck on this Jeffers thing. I refuse to give up on him contributing to the Twins in 2027. The path to that happening just feels more realistic now than at any time in the past. A Jeffers/Jackson combo costs you about $25M, whereas a Caratini/Jackson combo cost you about $11M (once you count the 2028 buyout). I'm sorry but having Jeffers for $14M more is just flat out worth it. This relies on two things. 1) Giving Jeffers the QO and him accepting it 2) Trading Caratini in the next two weeks Neither of those is a given, but both seem reasonable.

    My assumption would be that unless we have a really interesting and successful Aug/Sept that Tom will want to hire a established GM. He's used to running big businesses and having a guy like Zoll (inexperienced, kind of got the job by default) in charge of those types of businesses doesn't feel like the norm.

    One thing that hasn't really been talked about... If we sell at the deadline, is there ANY chance that Jeremy Zoll has his job in 2027? That shouldn't dictate decisions, but at some level it can't help but have an influence.

    The one-year deals this coming offseason... Taj with 2.5 years of control left at that point... Caratini.... Sands... The guys you mentioned. Anything not nailed down that might provide a positive future value. It's not about the specific names. It's about the idea of being sellers year after year and having that slowly become our identity. We were sellers in 2025. Perhaps in large part due to a crappy 2 weeks in late July. If we are sellers in 2026, which might happen if we have a crappy 2 weeks in late July, that probably makes us more likely to be sellers in 2027, even if all we're selling this year is pieces that have zero chance of being around in 2027. I worry about becoming a franchise that is just always selling because a) it's easier and safer than buying, b) we are obsessed with squeezing every ounce of future value out of every decision we make. Being a buyer is scary. But does it have to be? The best run teams aren't scared of buying and aren't scared of selling. They are nimble and confident enough to chart a meaningful path and they don't let a good or bad two weeks in late July chart that path for them.

    Whatever I do at the deadline, I don't want it to increase the odds that I'm selling again in 2027. ETA: in my opinion, trading Joe Ryan would make it more likely that we're in sell mode again in 2027
