  1. My two issues with pitch framing are this.... 1. Just because it was a strike, based on pitch f/x, doesn't mean it wasn't called a strike because of Kurt Suzuki. A quick trip to brooksbaseball.net will show you all you need to know about umpire consistency. 2. Even if you want to attribute every non-strike call to Suzuki, I still don't trust the part where they try to apply a run value to crappy pitch framing. There's so much involved there, that it seems basically impossible to apply an accurate number. It would be interesting to look at the formula they use. If the formula doesn't require a complex matrix of existing situations and possible outcomes then I don't trust it one bit.
  2. I think there are three main camps here: 1. Don't extend him. In fact trade him before the deadline for whatever you can get. 2. I'd be happy with him extended through 2015, but any more than that and I feel like we are doing a significant amount of prospect blocking 3. I'll take a proven professional hitter as long as I can get him if the dollars aren't crazy. I'm in camp 2, but they all have their flaws The flaw with #1 is that you are back to relying on unproven youth (or in the case of Colabello, not-youth) The flaw with #2 is that nobody who says they would be open to a long term contract is looking at a 1yr deal. If they are looking for that, they call it an extension. The flaw with #3 is that if you are spending money on a DH-only type guy over several years when many signs point the fact that much cheaper options with relatively the same production, then you're tying up money that could be spent on other areas that might not be so easily filled. Then there's one flaw with all of them.... he's not hitting very well right now.
  3. If we are going to talk about how many dominant hitters we had during each playoff year, we should include players like Chili Davis and Jim Thome. Did you use WAR or just oWAR, since you said dominant "hitters"?
  4. Cost him $3000 a day (about) that he's not on the major league club. Sorry about that $30k, Yohan.
  5. Is this what we'd get if Gardy platooned Arcia and Cola? http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=LF&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=600875
  6. ....and Houston is about to win!
  7. We're only 3.5 games out of 1st overall pick next year!!!!
  8. If you are a contender and you knew your 5th starter could give you 6ip and 3 runs every game, you'd take that, right? Not that he's doing that, but I'm just posing the question.
  9. This thread was intended to be an "evenhanded look at Correia" but it quickly spun into rehashing of 20 month old free agent signing strategy discussion and unfounded assertions that Mike Pelfrey is guaranteed a spot in the rotation next spring. I think that this forum could actually use an evenhanded look at Kevin Correia.... as what he is right now for the MN Twins, a trade chip. Not some backhanded punchline of a Minnesota front office joke.
  10. Last week one of the moderators locked a thread and deemed to be an embarrassment to Twins Daily. I thought that was a bit over the top, but it's their site and they can moderate how they want. I'll be shocked if this thread doesn't get the same treatment. This thread is terrible.
  11. It's the guys that are looking (hoping) for those 3/25 to 4/40 deals that the current system hurts the most. Having a mid-level QO would mostly help those players old teams, but not hurt the player at all. Think about Suzuki. For the sake of argument, lets say he keeps playing close-ish to his current high level. He probably be looking to cash in over the offseason with a 2/15 or 3/20 type deal. 7.5 is a fair yearly salary and a Mid-QO it would behoove the Twins to make. If he accepts, great. If he turns it down, which he probably would, we probably get a sandwich pick out of it. It's those type of guys (old Type that teams used to get a little something for losing, that end up getting hurt in the new system.
  12. This is totally off the cuff, and I haven't put strategic thought into it, but what about two levels of QO? A) 15mil (or whatever number gets calculated) - Costs the new team it's 1st round pick.... with the same top 10 exception as now 7.5 mil (half) - Old team gets a sandwich pick, but new team gives up nothing.
  13. Terry? Is that you?
  14. We're up to $13.1M (14.1 if you include Flames' bonus) The linked article below makes it sound like it's a 3 year penalty, but it's really "just" a two year penalty. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24605276/yanks-game-international-free-agent-system-as-big-money-mlbers-underperform I wonder where the penalty money goes.
  15. This logic (that more players will accept a QO) could just as easily have the effect of teams not making as many QO to players. Before, with so many of them turning them down, teams viewed it as an opportunity to pick up a draft pick for someone that might not have been in their future plans anyway. Having less mid-tier FA tied to draft pick compensation could actually benefit the Twins, who have been reluctant (never) to give up a draft pick to sign a FA.
  16. I would imagine Clayton Kershaw would be very inconsistent too, if he was growing 1-2" per year, coursing with frame-filling testosterone, and worried about asking girls to go steady.
  17. What's the MLB record?
  18. Perhaps Cola getting his shot back in the majors will at least earn Vargas a promotion to Rochester
  19. How does UZR take into account superior defensive positioning? Ibanez's catch of Escobar's potential double, in the 6th inning, made me think about this. Dick was saying what a good catch it was for a 42yo. And it was certainly out of his "zone," but the catch was 100% due to good positioning. So does Ibanez get credit for a "out of zone" catch or does UZR account for this?
  20. I'd trade Suzuki to the O's for Hunter Harvey
  21. I was trying to come up with a clever Chuck Norris joke related to Berrios, when I stumbled upon what I think might be a decent nickname for him How about "Fruit Loops" (Berry O's) ---also hanging head in shame---
  22. Dick and Bert just SAVAGING Hicks. Last I checked (a couple days ago) Hicks had a higher OBP than Mauer.
  23. Grant Green looks like a pitcher standing there in batters box.
  24. Come on, Dick... A 23yo right of college is at least 4 seasons away from the majors in the Twins system.
