  1. Ken Rosenthal said on Twitter this morning (I can't figure out how to embed on here): "Expectation within the industry is Ryu will exceed Bumgarner's $17m aav in deal of at least four years. Two industry people with knowledge of starting pitching market predict minimum 4 years/$80 million. Teams still in need of starter include Blue Jays, Angels, Twins." Darren Wolfson via Twitter: "Hear that the MNTwins aren't sure yet if 4-year offer makes sense. His injury history and age suggest it doesn't. But, realistically, the only chance you have to make him think about coming to Minnesota is to go there. Personally, I'd keep exploring the trade market." Sigh.
  2. Probably kept reading about how no one wants to play here!
  3. Didn't the Brewers make the NLCS in 2018? And didn't Cain win a Gold Glove last year? The Brewers have made two trips to the NLCS since 2011 and have a 12-14 playoff record. The Twins have made zero trips to the ALCS since 2003 and have a 2-19 playoff record since then. The 1991 World Series, which was nearly 30 years ago, means nothing to me at this point.
  4. I'd be fine with the Twins never spending a cent in FA and making bold trades. My problem at the moment is that we have seen neither. I would really, really, love to be proven wrong this offseason.
  5. Yes, I would like to be the Brewers, actually. Trade for Sabathia in 2008... Trade for Yelich. Sign Lorenzo Cain. Sign Grandal. Make some moves to try to actually win the World Series.
  6. I see your point, which is well made, but I disagree. If our prospect pipeline is as strong as they say it is, you don't need to resign all of the players you mentioned. Further, I would hope that we aren't avoiding signing an impact pitcher so that we can save up some money for Tyler freaking Duffey. One of the major problems I have as a lifelong Twins fan is this notion that we have to protect the future. I always hear a quote attributed to Torii Hunter (but have never been able to find the actual quote) where he (supposedly) said: "In Minnesota its always wait until next year, but next year never comes." Even the Yankees understand how it is done. You grow your core of players, then supplement them with trades and impact free agents. Rinse, repeat.
  7. "Look, I know most Minnesotans hate this shorthand but I needed it for the wordplay so please let it slide. As much as I love Minneapolis, I recognize that we're not the most appealing destination for high-profile free agents and their families." In my opinion, it's not the city and state, it's the ownership and the way the franchise is run. Would you want to play for a team that tries to do things on a shoestring budget, or a team that is willing to pay for a real contender. Maybe Wheeler's girlfriend truly dragged him to Philly (although I would imagine it was that extra $18 million that was the real reason), but I am guessing their contract to Bryce Harper and the message ownership puts out there that the goal is to win the World Series didn't hurt either. If a player can go anywhere in the league, I would imagine two things are most important: money, and a commitment to winning. I really doubt these guys care about where they will spend essentially three months out of the year when you factor in all the road trips.
  8. Come on now, guys. It’s easy to spend other people’s money... He didn’t want to play here... His girlfriend visited Tucson once... The Diamondbacks overpaid/the market isn’t fair... The front office is just being patient/ they are geniuses... Small market team, not enough money... Don’t want to be stuck with a contract in five years Maybe Graterol will triple his workload and be an ace Enjoy the ride... We won 100 games last year Etc etc etc Which excuse will it be this time? EDIT: Oh a new one!!! He wanted to hit!!
  9. No one is asking the Twins to be a top-3 team in payroll. Most fans would be content with being league average, which was $18 million more than the team spent last year. Currently, and it's early as far as free agency/arbitration goes, the Twins are $30 million below the league average. Honestly, I can understand not going crazy on free agents during the terrible 2011-2017 seasons, there was no real core there able to contend. But this is when most teams push their chips onto the table and try to get it done. It's cyclical. Look at the Royals, they went all in, went to two world series, now they stink. But I think fans are fine with it because they got the trophy a few years ago.
  10. Was about to type something similar. Are we really as deep at OF as we think we are? What about when Buxton misses his annual 50-80 games? We are in a position, supposedly, to add payroll. Why would we give up a known quantity in the prime of his career (and prospects!) for a reclamation project or young pitcher that -might- be good, when we could just sign a Bumgarner or Ryu? Maybe we regret the fourth and fifth years of a Bumgarner contract, but if there is a WS title in the first three years, who cares?
  11. Did anyone else find this interesting? Latest on free agent LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu. He said there's no truth to report coming out of Minnesota that he wants to stay on the West Coast. So, why is a report like this originating here in Minnesota and not with someone associated with Ryu? Who originated this report and for what purpose? This is a new wrinkle this season, that it's not "budget constraints" causing the team's inactivity, but suddenly no one wants to play in Minnesota. I don't want to hear about market size, players like Yasmani Grandal will sign with the Brewers if the money is right. Is it the climate? Players don't need to live hear year-round to play for the Twins, and summers here are just as good if not better than New York or Boston.
  12. Spend more money-->win more games-->get fans more excited and breed more loyalty-->sell more tickets/merchandise-->make more money On top of that, even if the Pohlads somehow "lost" $100 million dollars in 2020, they could sell whenever they wanted and walk away with over a BILLION in profit.
  13. Honestly, what does it matter how excited people were before 2018? The signings resulted in the team having a miserable season, multiple players getting traded for pennies on the dollar and the manager getting fired.
  14. I would also like to add that blogging for Twins Daily doesn't make you any more credible than me, and the way that you and Nick Nelson tend to talk down to other Twins fans for their opinions is getting a little old. And to your previous point, the team's President and Ownership has been the same for quite some time and have been preaching the same small-market BS since I was a kid. The front office doesn't hold unilateral power over decisions like payroll. If you want to tell me that the front office has done well with the limited resources they have been given from ownership, I'll listen. But challenging my "credibility" because you disagree with me will just make me stop visiting this website.
  15. Oh, you must mean like the trade deadline last year? Or the stellar free agent class of 2018 on the heels of a playoff appearance?
  16. I'm heading down to Hennepin Avenue right now to put my blanket down on the parade route.
  17. Honestly, the most impressive thing this franchise has done in the last 20 years has been conditioning the fan base to constantly lower its expectations. By not trading away prospects, they can always use them as the carrot in front of fans' faces as hope for the future.
  18. When you ask for a Super Nintendo and your parents get you a TurboGrafix 16
  19. Conspiracy Theory: A small part of the reason for this change is less foul balls/bats into the stands and into the "Game-used" booth where they can sell for $50-100 each.
  20. Agreed. As recently as yesterday, the Twins were listed among the strong possibilities, so it seems as though we have dropped out. A report is just a report, anything could still happen, but Olney is pretty good and I feel like this means the Twins have dropped out of the bidding.
  21. Per Buster Olney at ESPN (posted this morning), the Phillies are the front-runners for Wheeler. The Reds, White Sox and Rangers are also mentioned as possibilities. "The bidding for right-hander Zack Wheeler continues to progress toward resolution, with the Philadelphia Phillies seen by sources as the most potent bidders -- and the Reds, White Sox and Rangers also involved." SOURCE: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28222913/sources-phillies-seen-top-bidder-zack-wheeler
  22. I think it's awful, but like most things in today's game of baseball it wasn't made with me (37-year-old balding old dude) in mind.
  23. Kiriloff. Let's just go for it, if he struggles send him down. No one could have predicted Arraez's breakout, sometimes all it takes is a shot.
  24. I'm glad that Falvine got good minor leaguers in their trades in 2018, but I can't help but think that Escobar and Pressley would have looked real good on last year's team.
