  1. Leslie Arnold "Bubba' Thompson -- add him to the nicknamed Twins. Bubba has been assigned to so many clubs that his hat size, photo shopped, is now 8 1/4.
  2. Whom will I kick around this year with Gallo gone?
  3. Partly, have to agree. The slow 'hot stove' is also about money. Agents are demanding huge contracts relative to generations past for relative talent which cut into the owners' margins. Why sign that $22MM/yr contract when added benefits neither assure more victories nor enhanced revenue. These 3 players don't have that wow factor. Personally, I see the game/business moving into an era of diminished margins for owners. Deferred salaries will begin to mount up. Baseball doesn't hold the attention of culture for a box office draw or media revenue like football does. Would love to be in the room when the "less wealthy" owners take on the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees, Padres, and Rangers owners. Meanwhile, Twins will rescue another DFA'd pitcher, assign him to St Paul, and ask the priest to have a novena for a new pitch that the organization can teach, all for the cost of a few tix when the Pirates come to town..
  4. Sooner or later, whether salaries are deferred or not, the cash register at the gate is going to scream more loudly. Will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. The owners are not going to let their margins decrease, all the while signing these large contracts. We'll see how much the public can stand, though much of the gate is commercially purchased. And ads for the video/audio of the game? How much will advertisers be willing to go along with increased cost in air time?
  5. The Dodgers’ impressive offseason got even better late Sunday night, as the club and All-Star outfielder Teoscar Hernández agreed to a one-year, $23.5 million contract, sources confirmed to MLB.com. The club has not confirmed the deal. https://www.mlb.com/news/teoscar-hernandez-deal-with-dodgers Dodgers must see where the hole is in that 41% K rate from last year. Good gravy...
  6. Tug McGraw. Yeppir, he was a Marine.
  7. I will NEVER forget this clip of Bauer (and then Francona) when Bauer launches a ball over the OF fence and Francona with his, "what the Sam Hill (f..#*#*#*.) is wrong with you?!#*#*#*"). A leopard doesn't change his <s>stripes</s> spots. Absolute classic/classless blooper/bleeper.
  8. Bauer in Minnesota? Best way I know to curb the ascending interest in the game by women fans. Big no on my part.
  9. Wilmer "Vinegar Bend" Mizell
  10. Red Schoendienst and Stan "The Man" Musial
  11. I guess we don't have enough server space to list all of Gardy's tagged players with -ie on the end ... For example, baseball commissioner "Mannie."
  12. From my era Rocky Colavito, Bo Bolinski ("Mamie Van Doren," from Rowena, SD, must be mentioned in concert with Bo,)
  13. ...au contraire. Quite a conclusion but I see no basis for drawing it.
  14. Excellent article. Well written on relatively obscure info which I wouldn't have without this kind of story and writing. Piques my interest to see how they do in ST. Appreciate it, db
  15. Moose Skowron Pee Wee Reese
  16. Yes, when I saw he had a career BA .263, I was more than surprised.
  17. Andrelton Simmons heads back to Curacao. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39200159/andrelton-simmons-4-gold-glove-ss-announces-retirement
  18. Twins should have grabbed him in a utility FO position. Announcer, articulate, could do great color on a broadcast. Public relations. Minor league pitching coach. Really enjoyed every interview I ever heard with him.
  19. Good observations (from an Amazon stock holder).
  20. Eddie Matthews' bat had an ultra thin handle. We played with one. One guy ball-boyed for a semi-pro team which played in our part of town, the German district (we had them all; Polish, Ukrainian, Sicilian, Irish). He got all the broken bats which he doctored w/wood screw and electrical tape. When balls began their unwind, he got those as well. We played 2-3 games/day. No organization to it. Informal calls to opponents. There was our neighborhood - Martinsville. Crescent Drive had a team as did Sherwood Ave. If we couldn't drum up a game, we divvied up teams by "toss the bat" to pick sides. I had a Gil Hodges mitt for first base (I was a Luke Easter fan) but I used it wherever I needed to play. Good arm so I usually played outfield if not 3rd. I would share my glove but one rule -- you don't throw my glove to me between innings. You hand it to me or else... "Luuuuuuuuuke..." RIP https://case.edu/ech/articles/e/easter-luscious-luke#:~:text=On 23 June 1950%2C Easter, hit at CLEVELAND MUNICIPAL STADIUM.
  21. Mine were all in a shoe box ... had some gems. I got drafted during Vietnam, quickly scrambled to get into the USAirForce, and were gone by the time my four years were up. Mom had "cleaned" the closet. (Was that a tear on my cheek?). Duplicates and multiples which no one were interested in ("Card to be Named Later") went onto my bike, held in place with a clothespin against the spokes.
  22. Anyone else report on Polanco-Wiemer trade w/Brewers? https://wisportsheroics.com/milwaukee-brewers-minnesota-twins-trade-proposal-jorge-polanco-joey-wiemer-bradley-blalock-news-notes-rumors/
  23. Q&A at Ohtani press conference: Jack Harris, LA Times: "Do you have any special thanks to anyone you wish to express?" Ohtani: "Yes, I wish to thank the Twins for their bid in the process. The $900MM offer was overwhelming but it is just too cold to pitch up 'der in April. Besides, English is hard enough to learn without adding Minnesodan."
  24. Tampa, 27th smallest market size Milwaukee, 26th Orioles, 24th Twins, 18th Snakes, 17th... Houston, 15th Jays, 13th Braves, 11th Rangers, 8th Dodgers, 7th Phillies, 3rd Seems like small and medium sized clubs did alright for themselves this year. I believe that might be the point Seth referred to above. I
