  1. Seth I mostly agree this is the team going north to start the season. Unless Nunez falters badly from here I think they use the final option on Herrmann and he's the first utility type called up. I also think that Thielbar could be on a bubble or short leash with the arms available in AAA. Hicks needs to maintain his production or he's going back to the Red Wings and they bring Robinson to start the season as a fourth OF or platoon with Schafer. Then it'll be a battle between him and Rosario to be the first up.
  2. I think there should also be a "did I just say that?" Icon.
  3. I am encouraged by this thinking also. Beside the positives already cited, it should help keep the RP focused on the game. No more of this " not my turn, it's only the 7th" thinking. IMO that should create a bit of adrenaline of anticipation, which could help performance.
  4. Calling up players from AA depends entirely on the talent level available. It's been a long time since the Twins have the talent to do so. Now they have several potential call ups.
  5. Spring certainly does bring optimism with anticipation of new life. It is coming across in the reports (thanks ya'll) and in the comments. We've been waiting for a turn around and the way things appear it's close, maybe this year. Feels like we're in turn 2 looking for some passing lanes on the back stretch. It's a long season, but it's spring - hope is alive and well. Something that has been missing recently. I think I'll enjoy this year of Twins baseball!
  6. What do you mean "for fat 1st baseman with no footwork?" That was how they I was taught and it work for us and I never had a problem stretching. I never anticipated with either foot on the bag. Only after the ball was in the air did one of my feet touch the bag. Like I said they may do it different today.
  7. Vance, looks like he's got the correct foot on the bag or are you being sarcastic? Maybe things are different today. I was taught, if the ball is on the OF side of the bag tag with the left foot and use the right foot on the home plate side. You don't get your feet tangled up and you're in a better position to catch the ball. It's called footwork.
  8. Spycake, I was merely responding to those that felt there has been little turnover, not trying to prove there has been roster improvement. I agree with the need to improve with new players that also have better upside. And while the turnover on the pitching staff isn't where we'd probably like it, we have to admit it is better that where it was 2-3 years ago. Still has a way to go, but I look at it ss the first step to the future studs. And as I earlier pointed out that the average age doesn't bother me as much as whether their ages reflect negatively on their performance. A roster dominated by young players or old ones isn't generally better than the other. A good mixture of youth and experience usually provides a better team. It is also hard to quantify that age mixture by a number only, it depends on the personnel. To define a roster as good or bad merely by using average age or turnover misses the quality, non-quality, factor of the players on the roster. What is coming and when will they become average or better MLers needs to be put into the evaluation. As well as, how long are the veterans signed? And that brings all the way back to the pitching staff, which I also believe we need an influx of our top prospects. I think we all fear that the veterans will impede the prospects debuts and tenure. IMHO, this year is critical in establishing a strong contending club nto the 20's or beyond.
  9. Agree with you all. Maybe the Rangers aren't interested in our "high priced flops" (good one), but we are in the time frame where more injuries could force teams to look elsewhere for that fifth starter. Something could happen IF we have a strong battle for our 5th SP. Logjams do have a tendency to sort it out, I guess I was just trying to help it along.
  10. I went back to 2011-2014 to see how many are still around. I just looked at everyone that were on the MLB roster a one point during the season. The names capitalized should be considered as givens or strong candiates to make this years 25 man roster. In 2011 there were 44 different players. Still with the Twins 5: MAUER,PLOUFE, PERKINS, DUESING, Oliveros, 2012 had 46 different players. Add 3: DOZIER, ESCOBAR, FIEN. 2013 had 43 different players. Add 10: ARCIA, HICKS, PINTO, GIBSON, PELFREY, THIELBAR, Pressley, Tomkin, Bernier, Fryer. 2014 saw only 37 different players. Add 13: SUZUKI, SANTANA, NUNEZ, VARGAS, SCHAFER, HUGHES, NOLASCO, MAY, MILONE, Polanco, Darnell, Herrmann, A Thompson. So, as I see it, the Twins still have 4 for 2011, 3 from 2012, 6 from 2013, and 9 from last year. Of the 22 that have a good chance to make this years active roster, FIFTEEN (15) have 2 years or less with the Twins. I would have to say there has been a pretty good turnover.
  11. Is this an opportunity to move Pelfrey or Nolasco?
  12. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Yu Darvish of the Rangers could be facing TJ surgery. Would the Twins be a trading partner for maybe Mike Pelfrey or Rick Nolasco? Or anyone else?
  13. Another good article. Like Paul, I didn't realize the number of OFers was that many. Plus, several cetainly were not considered bona fide OFers. You better be careful here, cuz you are starting to paint an optimistic picture. Seriously, I agree with your conclusions and see that the Twins are at the crux of a contending team. It would not be impossible to see this team contend into the fall or even make the playoffs. Unlikely yes, impossible no.
  14. Turnover by itself does nothing to indicate a teams potential. One year chnage can be misleading. This, to me, is another example of using a certain statistic without proper analyzation of it. Certainly, when you are in building phase (using younger players) by a couple of years the turnover will likely be less than a team that is old, or a team that has many needs. It says more by looking at how has the roster changed in the last 3-4 years, which in the Twins case has been substantial. I am not at all concerned by the number of turnover, but rather has the team made the necessary changes to improve the roster and that is not usually done in one year. Secondly, the average age of 29+, taken on the number only, is the prime year of a player. Just as Hunters 40 can skew the average, so can a 21 year olds. Ideally, I'd take a team full of 28-30 year old. But here again just the average age of a team really tells us nothing - except the teams average age.
  15. Excellent read! I really didn't realize how weak the pen was. I think you did a great and objective job in this analysis. Hopefully TR saw the same thing and that was the reason he added a couple of these relievers. It certainly seems a fixable element. With the heat coming our pen could flip its ranking in the near future. Looking forward to parts 2&3.
  16. I also went with Dozier, just because he brings us a breath of hope and change coming. If Joe has a very good year, he'll be out there, especially on a nationally basis. Next year Sano and Vargas could very well be the face in the camera. Even that gets me excited.
  17. I absolutely agree with the policy. In most cases, this will be 4 hours or less. It doesn't matter what job one is at, each individual should be expected to give their undivided attention to their work. While I endorse technology, a major problem with instant communiction via smart phones and tablets is the lack of face-to-face communication, which brings a deeper understanding to any communication. When society foregoes f2f communication humans will have effectively become robots. I alo like Eddie's take on the plan.
  18. I am not going to defend this reason, but I will offer that it is entirely plausible that it is affecting him. To play adequate or better requires at least some skill level, positioning, and good decision-making. If, and this is a big 'if', Arcia is concerned with the overhang, it could be possible that this interferes with sound decision-making, which is critical for him to overcome his skill weaknesses.
  19. Great story Seth! I really don't remember him, but do have a faint recollection of the "Klaw." Am anticipating Part 2. I do enjoy ready about the history of the Twins and baseball, such as the top 25 GMs feature. One thing I didn't know was that the Mudhens were a Twins AAA team. Of course, my knowledge of the minor leagues was nil until I started reading you. Thank you. That might be interesting also - a trip through our minor league system.
  20. Color me - MEH. Good for Boston and Moncado. But the fact is he is still not in the Majors and won't be before 2016. We will still have to see if he can adjust to a higher level of baseball and atheletic here. Even Buxton isn't a sure thing. Both are promising, but still prospects. And like someone mentioned, there is a downside to this signing. Realistically I can't fault how any of the teams are using or going after big revenue. Philosophically, I worry that it is approaching the ridiculous. Something will have to change, but I jsut hope it is good for all of baseball, including the minor league players and the fans. It's getting to the point that all pro sports are filled with lottery winners (even at the end of the bench), sometimes many times over.
  21. I also believe Rosario starts in AAA. While his return from his suspension was not at all stellar, one might overlook that, somewhat, given his previous years' performance on top of his elite performance in the AFL against top prospects. Given the logjam, puching him to AAA certainly could be justified.
  22. I don't understand either. Guess I should ask my folks.
  23. Someone with talent and potential of Meyers needs to be given every chance to pass or fail as a starter. I'd love to see him make the club out of ST, but if not, send him to AAA to be the first called up. I want him in a starters role, which means he needs to be stretched out. i know that Santana started in the bullpen, but IIRC he didn't have major control issues. Walks are not good coming from the bullpen. I think I could handle a few walks as a starter for a while given his potential. Walks from a reliever are a disaster for the club AND pitcher.
  24. It is always a good feeling to be ranked or recognized as being or having one of the best. This ranking certainly makes us giddy with hope for the future. I guess I'm less concerned about the individual rank than the overall picture. Thse lists just verify the Twins have a boatload of talent coming versus other teams, expecially the AL Central. Since talent wins the future appears bright. For those willing to trade Perkins, why trade a position of strength when there is not a "certifiable" replacement waiting? Plus, having a closer that can help put games in the win column is important for at least 2 reasons. First, it keeps us moving in the right direction by adding wins now and second it helps change the culture of losing into winning. And finally, with all the clamoring to let the kids play, what would we go after? And would that block our prospects? I doubt very much that trading Perk would net us enough to speed up this transition to a competitive/winning club.
  25. Forgot about Dunn's ability to take walks. Dunn also struck out often. Still, I'd start him in AA, In this case I like pushing him to see if he continues with the power, which has been awesome. Regarding the walks, It would be interesting, as mentioned above, if Walker was taking more pitches last year and also how many of his strike outs were swinging. All that said, my main point is that there are other teams that may be intrigued by his power and with the potential logjam in the OF, he could be a good piece in a trade. But first, I'd want to challenge him at AA. It certainly could backfire, but there is also the option of sending him back to Ft Myers. Been done before. But I'd been starting him in FSL too.
