  1. Not to be a TR apologist but there is this assumption that he is not committed to do either, which I believe is misguided.Since his rehire he has built, or continued to build, the minor system with good talent. We are just now seeing that talent surface at the MLB level. It is my position, which could very well be TRs, that the Twins just are not quite at the point that one should make "gutsy" moves. In fact, many of us held the same view this spring - play the young talent to get ready for 2016 or beyond. That said, trading solid MLB assets for prospects delays the process. Trading sound, strong team assets, such as Perkins, to shore up another hole is a zero net gain. IMO, upgrading where able, while maintaining most of the integrity of the future sounds prudent to me. I hope he can find those upgrades and is willing to help the future without tearing apart the foundation in place. And yes that may require some of the prospects, just not the core of the team.
  2. Thrylos, spot on! And that's why Walter was my first pick. Unfortunately nowadays history is limited to ones own lifetime.
  3. I think the point of the article is to point out how surprising performances are so far, not as a prediction of the second half. Just a little bit of trivia. At the AS break, it's good to reflect and enjoy a good first half of baseball.
  4. I'm in your camp about Hicks. However. we really can't compare age performance of the two for the simple reason Kepler had a much larger learning curve than Hicks. (Germany vs. US baseball experience.) That said - Kepler is very intriguing and has fans excited about the future as he improves. I worry, though, if he'll have enough time to pan out for the Twins b/c 2015 is already his second option year, IIRC.
  5. Another name I think we might be overlooking is Brandon Peterson. I'm not sure if the Twins would promote him from AA but he has be absolutely dominate. It might be a year early for him, but he has out-performed many of the notable prospects.
  6. Excellent run down on internal candidates, Seth. Of the choices, I like AJ and Tomkin for different reasons: Achter b/c of his performance and Tomkin for the reasons you stated. Duffy is intriguing. With his background could be a good addition to the BP on a push to the post-season. Plus his upper 90's FB would play well. Can't ignore Rogers either. There will need to be some roster moves to get some of these up. My gut tells me that may be limited until Aug-Sep. We'll see.
  7. Good points Doc. I generally agree with quantity, except when there is that exceptional talent. In the case of Javier, the Twins apparently think as a SS he has a lot of potential for them. Back to the Future would be nice. Guess we'll have to wait for 5-6 years. That said, I'm ok with this signing.
  8. Certainly he has the background. What I don't know is how much exposure he's had with actual scouting of these players. It seems to me that it'd be next to impossible to cover the US plus the international market. And unless things have changed w/in the last year, rating the international prospects is a difficult process, mostly b/c of the lack of info available. I guess I put less importance on internatiional ratings as real valuable information, unlike US prospect ratings, at this time. That will change, but for now, I have to trust a teams individual scouting. And the Twins have done a fair to good job on this in the last few years.
  9. Interesting conversation. Isn't it great that we have this delimma? My thoughts are you keep Hughes, Gibson, Pelfrey, and Milone in the rotation when Santana gets off his suspension. I'm assuming that the FO feels he's ready to contribute. Mays goes to Rochester to work on some things and keeps stretched out. Having Pelf and Milone on the Twins gives them much more value in the trade market.
  10. While there've been several surprises, for me the biggest positive surprise is the starting pitching, specifically Pelfrey. While May and Gibson have been very good, I thought they would be better but they've still have exceeded my expectations. The negative surprise has to be Ervin Santana's suspension. That came completely out of the blue and definitely started the season on a very bad note. Expectation was that he would help improve the rotation. Ironically, his suspension has resulted in a positive surprise.
  11. Maybe I missed it but Kepler was not named as an AS and yet he played. Was he Buxtons replacement?
  12. Sano may not be playing other positions at this time for two good reasons. First, the Twins truly believe he's the future 3B and don't want to muddle his development in the field. Secondly, having missed all of last year, they want to make sure he is back to his level of defensive performance prior to his injury. Hitting is probably easier for him to shake off the rust than fielding which is likely his second priority. Actually I think that may be the only thing to hold him back for now. IMO, when he does come up (my guess sometime after the ASG) he will be playing 3B and DH as will Plouffe. But Plouffe will probably play some first and OF. Of course, Sano could be up earlier if Plouffe has to go on the DL.
  13. Jokin, you could be absolutely correct on potential moves this summer. And I agree with your targets of catcher and SS. The logjam is certainly a future issue and TR may very well start early to use that to his advantage. Personally I think a run this year may be a bit premature despite our current position. Whatever trades or changes made need to be also dedicated to sutures success.
  14. Doc excellent overview. After this article I know you have a Doctorate in history (baseball). Seriously well put and a very honest look back. As I said earlier this spring, this year will prove to be the turning point of the recent angst. I believe that TR will do everything they can to continue the progress made so far, but I doubt very much that much will come from the outside via trades. I think after the ASG we will see the likes of Sano, Meyers and others deemed ready to have a MLB tryout. That could happen earlier if performance pushes the issue. As far as improving the team, I truly believe that the bullpen will see the most changes first, unless there are injuries that necessitate other moves. I really don't foresee any trades for major players at this time. For some reason, I wouldn't be surprised to see Arcia traded though. Just a gut feeling. While this run and position is great, I really think that the FO privately believes this is not a playoff team YET! Thus the rest of the year will be configured to remain in contention, but preparing for next year and beyond. No major changes outside, just ride with our prospects.
  15. According to Phil Miller of the Trib, both Hicks and Hunter are out at least thru Sunday -Hicks with his elbow, meaning a likely DL and Hunter serving his suspension. Likely that was the final straw to promote Buxton. Despite the circumstances, Buxton is here and I really think others will follow when ready or needed. IMO things are a-changing. While somewhat surprised of call up now, like everyone else I'm excited.
  16. As I sit on the deck with my 1st 5 o'clock, I'm so thankful this is the GM board game, b/c otherwise my 5o'clocks would follow the sun to Japan.
  17. Very good article. I was interested in Ryan's comments about his decision making on the roster, etc. I also like the bit of fire regarding media's dismissal of the Twins success. Again good write!
  18. First this is great news for SG, the Twins, Ft Meyers, and us, the fans. One thing is that he definitely forced their hand and I think that's what will move players early. As TR said Sunday about Vargas and Pinto, they need to force their promotion, Right or wrong, that seems to be his position, outside of need. Second, it's not impossible to change philosophy, but it also requires the talent to make that change. I believe that happened when they started drafting the SO pitcher. Still there needs to a unanimous focus on that change to pull it off. And it looks like the development of the players is starting to show that change. I like the what I'm seeing and hearing so far. Let's hope it continues.
  19. IMO this is one of the weakest reasons for getting rid of a player who is NOT hurting the club. Those players in the minors will get their chance and all can continue to learn and hone their craft where they're playing now. The time will come and it might be thru a trade or release of minor league players or the inevitable injury.
  20. Just got done reading Bollingers piece. Now that is what I'm talking about. There was no sugar coating or dismissing of the facts and statistics, but he gave solid reasons what has been happening for this surge in wins. I still question whether all this is sustainable, but it's also possible certain players start performing toward their norm and thus the Twins remain relevant.
  21. That was as difficult to read as what I might imagine a romance novel would be. He needs to move into fiction. Granted my attitude was cautioned by these posts, but seriously, he had a premise and made sure he found whatever obscure supporting data available. And really should any of us be surprised by any of this? It's just a continuation of a general lack of respect we, and other MW reams, have received since 2001. Even after the Royals got to the World Series with their many shortcomings many of these pundits still think this game is played by individual statics. Last I looked it's still a team game. Don't tell that because they don't think it will happen it won't. Do the research and give me good analysis, not a back of the napkin study.
  22. Just as I didn't get too worried about the start of the season, I'm not going to go gags over this last month. Yes I have really enjoyed this run, BUT there is a lot of baseball left. However, I still believe, no matter what the rest of the season brings, that the Twins have turned a corner to competitive baseball. Let's hope they continue to surprise us and the.baseball world.hope I certainly wouldn't call this streak smoke and mirrors, but this is still not a juggernaut of a baseball team, yet. We have been exposed to some good starting pitching, going deep in the games and for the most part the pen has done its job. The defense has picked up especially since Hichs has arrived. This has been a team accomplishment. They believe in themselves and each other, whether that's Molitor, Hunter, or the equipment guy, it's got themlaying well. There are some upgrades that need to be done, but I hope whoever comes in.brings the same team attitude that is currently on display. For one, I am a bit concerned about Arcia. Much of this turn around has happened in his absence . I hope he can get his stroke back and I'd stick him in the DH spot.. Outside of some RP upgrades, I'm willing to wait for our prospects force the issue.
  23. Those are certainly fun questions.. However, I'm choosing to avoid the speculation on the what ifs and just continue to enjoy this ride. Every once in a while life gives us a scenario that is beyond explanation - similar to 1987. Time will tells us how long a leash some have. Until that time I'm staying in the here and now and all of its splendor. I'll let others speculate.
