  1. I think you're overly optimistic about the basher lineup. 7 guys with 25HRs would be great but unlikely. Even so, HRs without men on base doesn't score many runs. I think a lineup with 3-4 mashers with the rest filled out with OBP and speed would be ideal. So I'd construct one similar to option 1.
  2. I agree with putting him in AA. Not everyone is an all-around hitter. I could see him, as is, as a potential Adam Dunn type player that actually offers some speed and a position. Let's see how he does with better competition. Walker, and others, could force some major roster decisions in the near future if they continue their path. That said, I'm sure someone would be willing to take the strike outs with that power if the Twins don't.
  3. Isn't this fun when we can argue about the order of 3 pitchers who have the potential to be top of the line? Been a long, long time. Anyway, I currently have Meyer, Berrios, and then Steward as my order. They are so close in potential so the only thing that separates them for me is their probability of reaching the MLB, or how close they are. That is usually way down on my list, but with similar talents like these (plus Thorpe, Gonsalves and others) I can only use that to separate them. This very well could be a continuing exercise for the next 3-4 years! OMG, I am about to pee my pants with excitement ----- or is that age??
  4. Yes, Ruesse hit one out with this article. Nice read. Besides the comments above about Allen, I was intrigued by the lack of face to face contact before hiring him AND the comment that the Twins were looking to go a 'new' direction. That really does get me excited.
  5. Thanks, CRArko for that great read. Totally agree with him.
  6. Can't really disagree with those players that have already been mentioned. But as the contrarian I am, my pick is Aaron Hicks. I think with new leadership at the helm gives him a fresh start, so-to-speak. I also think Hunter will have a good influence on him. As far as stats, something in the neighborhood of .260/.350/.350 with 18 SB. I also think he mans CF better than the average CFer. While some may not consider these as a breakout, but with Hicks, this would warrant an All-star selection for most of us.
  7. I've still not given up on a relatively young Hicks, but he needs to show progress to be in the line-up everyday. He seems like a good candidate for a change of scenery. IMHO, that change will be coming from the change of manager and coaches vs. a change of organizations. Right now, I'd tab him as the breakout candidate on the 40-man roster for this year. Don't fail me now, Aaron.
  8. I've always liked Parm. Hopefully a change will help him get it together in the bigs. Good luck.
  9. When I read that ban I thought "And we complained about Selig."
  10. A good background story on Ryan but that's really all it is. Still I enjoyed reading it. The "two prevailing theories" paragraph really looks out of place with the article though. Like a belch at a dinner with your boss. No followup. Let's just throw this in because I need more words. That could be an storyline all by itself. Guess I shouldn't be surprised considering the author.
  11. Thank you. I too share your anger, if I may say that, on both topics. What's really frustrating is that is very difficult for me to understand the rationale in all this. Any change as you suggest will not cause any hardship on MLB. In fact, it will increase their reach. Looking at the "beautiful" map I'm struck as to how someone in El Paso will attend more Rangers/Astro games b/c of the blackout. Or anyone in Gulfport, MS going to the Braves, Or Billings, MT to Seattle, Or Rapid City to the Twins. You get the picture. Many are outside of the regional area of teams and still blackouted. That thinking discourages a building of the fan base. Stupid! I sure hope they change this before I die.
  12. Outside of Tony O, Tovar was my favorite player. He was a very valuable part of the Twins during that time. Certainly a different time. He deserves the Twins HOF before Mack or Gladden and even Mudcat. Hoping next year is the charm.
  13. I have to chuckle at some of the comments about who deserves to start and who doesn't. Not all, but there is a strong element here that goes strictly on personal favorites and uses selected bias to prove their case. I'd like to get some advise on the stock markets from those that "know" for sure that May and Meyer will perform well this year and Nolasco and Pelfrey will suck. The Twins better hire that clairvoyant. And to think that a strong ST performance guarantees regular season success is laughable. One word answer to that premise - Hicks. Everyone, including myself have favorites, but let's be realistic. We don't have a clue how the season will play put for any individual, nor can we evaluate ST performances as indicators. I'm just happy that we start ST with viable options vs. the fillers we've had recently. Also, as several have said, by the end of the season May and Meyer will have been on the mound in Target Field.
  14. Spot on Nick! As I've stated previously, May has to be the favorite for #5, with Meyer in AAA as the first call up. I'd send Milone down also as the second sp in line.
  15. Why would anyone want to trade Buxton plus for a 2 year, injury concerned pitcher? If Ryan does that he deserves to fired immediately. Can you imagine a Mauer for a similar pitcher when Mauer was Buxton's age? Buxton is ans should be off-limits for anyone at this time. Same with Sano.
  16. I take these projections with a huge grain of salt. They are basically quantified guesses. They're fun to read, but so many variables come into play that it's hard for me to give them much value, especially prospects. As Jorgenswest said, prospects take time and many fail to live up to their promise.
  17. Kab, somehow we must have communication disconnect here. What you have said above is what I'm advocating. So what is don't you understand? My initial point is that if there is an obvious DH type player use him there before you try other options. That's all. I also think Arcia and Pinto need to be given every chance to prove they are viable options at their respective positions before we move them into the DH role primarily. If none, or part, of this fails it's time to adjust. Now tell me how does this differ from your position?
  18. E Excuse me, I'm not a futurist. I don't know how things will turn out, but I'd give these three every opportunity to thrive or perish at said positions. If we are willing or want pitching prospects learning on the job, shouldn't we also allow the position players the same latitude? No where did I say that Pinto or Arcia should not be used as a DH. Of course, using them in place of Vargas is obvious and the most teams operate. I tend to like the model Boston uses, that's all.. Disagree if you like but I think I've explained myself sufficiently.
  19. Can't really disagree with you. Dante. I will be greatly disappointed if both are not pitching on the Twins by mid-July. For now, I wait and 'hope'.
  20. First, I'm not a big fan of them, but they ARE around. So it is my point to find the best out of the situation. Some of my objection, is the idea of trading assets from a position that still isn't a strength. but improving. SP has been miserable, but it's getting better. If you can trade them after LY and improve the staff, excellent. But right now they have little trade value. Totally agree with you on May and Meyer (see boldface) and have posted that on another TD thread. IF Pelfrey is retained he should go to the pen, otherwise release or trade him. I'd slot Nolasco as the fourth member of the staff and May as the fifth. Meyer and then Milone would be the first and second to be called up from AAA. By May 31, much of this should be sorted out with injuries, trades, or performances. If they all are performing well, especially Nolasco, then a trade is likely this summer. IMO, Santana is really Nolasco's replacement. I think by July, if not earlier, we both may get our wish of Meyer on the staff. I hope it is much earlier. Not to derail this thread, I agree with Paul. EVERY avenue should be explored to improve this club, especially trades.
  21. i understand that there is a HUGE 'Billy Beane" fan club in MN, however, I get tired of hearing how we should be trading players as he has done. IIRC, the one reason forwarded on the building of Target Field was so that the Twins could retain their stars. And now, it seems, many want to go back to those days via Beane's model. Oakland and Beane don't have the option to retain many of their players, so their only choice is to trade good performing players. He was able to do this b/c of the talent they were bringing up. What you are suggesting is to maintain the rebuilding program into the future. Let's just rid ourselves of quality players/pitchers and bring in new guys. The pitching staff is, not only being fixed, but also having quality. A blend of vets and youth is good. The time for trading will come, but for now it seems fruitless to re-expose a weakness by trading good pitching so that we can bring up our prospects that have yet to prove they are good replacements. So far, it is just hope they they will be good. And if they aren't we fall back to where we started. I'm not a big fan of Pelfry, Milone or Nolasco, however, their tenure with the Twins will be determined in short order.
  22. Kab, I'd prefer to have Vargas as the DH and use Arcia/Pinto as position players. That is based on my assumption that Vargas is not much of a fielder at all. I see him as a Ortiz-type of player. As far as fielding of the other two, the Twins have indicated with their actions that they believe that they can be serviceable position players. So that is where I'd use them. Let them grow at their positions.
  23. That is true kab. I look at Vargas as only a DH, whereas I see Arcia and Pinto having some potential as a position player. I agree their fielding is poor but I'm not ready to just put them in the DH role yet. It is possible, with enough work and coaching, that they can become serviceable position players. OTOH, I am assuming Vargas fielding is well below the others. I don't know that for sure, but haven't read anything to the contrary, IF he can play first adequately then I think he could be the backup first baseman and share DH duties with the others. As I wrote this I realized that these are young players still developing and nothing is set in stone at this time. Thus we could be having the same conversation next year about others.
  24. Sounds terrific! Wished I was closer than a 4 hour drive. Good luck and have a great Meltdown. Someday soon I'll be there.
  25. It will be interesting to see how TR handles Nolasco. If there is some improvement to drive his value up, will TR move him out, especially if their is any hint of a lack of commitment to this team? Have to believe he will. Also, I agree with beckmt, that the Santana signing was for Nolasco's eventual replacement. TR certainly has his GM(& scouting)eye on the prospects and can see a big potential logjam coming on the mound. Moving him loosens that blockage some. It's my belief that he is willing to cut bait more now than in the past b/c the revenues are there and will not be as burdensome today. A 'younger' Poland as owner doesn't hurt either.
