  1. My friends and I called him Butch Whine-some-more (or something like that) once the shine was off. I'm sure he probably wasn't such a complainer, but kids will be kids....I also remember the commercial 'I like that kid!'
  2. I'm not sure where the shock and awe lie. They were good last year and the youngsters now have a bit more experience under their belts.
  3. Walks and errors are the death knell for almost any team. The second game problem were the walks and of course the Guardians who seem to give the Twins fits every year.....
  4. They didn't play good infield defense in the one game (actually quite poor) but were saved by the outfield defense. Bader is very good in the outfield, and we know what Buxton can do with his wheels. I am glad the O's are still struggling, but I imagine them snapping out of it at any moment, so if the Twins can finish them off tomorrow that would be a big win-win.
  5. The difference is whether he was making mistakes or not is that he was willing to cough up the money. That is a substantially different playbook.......
  6. Clean baseball and good pitching win tight games--not one or the other but both. I don't care if the Twins only score one run. If their opponents can only muster a goose-egg, that's a win. That come-from-behind win in Boston was a real season changer, wasn't it? Bader has been a real find. I didn't mind his signing because I expected that he would be a significant upgrade on defense. The hitting has been a big and pleasant surprise. I did think signing France was a huge mistake. I'm happy to eat crow for the whole season.
  7. I've always liked Julien's approach to hitting, but all of this tweaking seems to have gotten him screwed up, and as was said, he can't seem to put a bad at bat behind him and he drags it out onto the field. I'm not sure how or why it started, but Miranda started swinging at everything just like Sano. It easy to imagine him getting more disciplined, but it's equally easy to imagine him continuing along that path. It has been dark days for both players, which makes me sad.
  8. I just hope he doesn't turn into another proney. I'm stunned that the champagne glass that is Buxton remains on the field TBH.
  9. The reason the Guardians are lucky is that they tend not to make fundamental errors, which the Twins seem obsessed with making. I'm not sure how many times I have been viewing a late inning game and begging the batter to hit it somewhere up the middle, so either Buxton or Correa field the ball. If it's hit to 2nd, hold your breath; if it's hit to third, cover your eyes; if it's hit to the mound, put a batting helmet on....
  10. It seems like we are always complaining about being cursed by the injury bug. We are no more cursed than anyone else, so that argument really doesn't fly. (For a comparable examination consider that the O's have had 14 players on the IL. BTW, I fear them more than practically anyone right now, so it is not great timing for the Twins. At least, the Twins will be at home, which may help, but my fear is real.) It has been in the tight games where we have really short-circuited. I don't care what the inning or the score, the bullpen has nearly always coughed up the lead late. Has it been fielding? Yes. Has it been hitting? Yes. Has it been pitching? Yes. Has it been the baserunning? Yes. Has it been the decisions by Baldelli? Yes. The rally in Boston I hope has turned the tables. (IMHO, the east is not nearly as daunting as it once was....although I'm sure when the Twins take on the Yankees, we'll be able to boost their confidence.)
  11. The Twin are amazingly in second place after the win! What a weekend! Wins count triple for a limited time only!
  12. Again, IMHO, the problem wasn't with Varland being called upon. The problem was that it didn't appear that Baldelli or Vasquez or both wanted him to throw his best pitch. If you don't want Varland to throw a fastball, don't bring him in. Three straight off-speed pitches. If the fastball gets knocked out of the park, you tip your hat, but don't scratch your head when the third consecutive off-speed pitch leaves the yard. There's an ancient saying that still rings true. "Don't get beat with your second best pitch."
  13. I disagree with the premise, referring to what others have mentioned. In addition, when he coughed up the 9th inning homer, Vasquez did not call for one fastball---three straight off-speed pitches in a row. Why not call for a fastball? If he can touch 100, let him throw it. In other words, the blame cannot only be dumped on the pitcher but the strategy itself and that also comes from higher up the chain. I'm perfectly fine with Varland. I think he's the least of our problems...
  14. To be fair, his bread and butter is the fastball. Why does Vasquez call for three straight off-speed pitches in a row with the game on the line? When a guy can reach 97+, let's see it...
  15. The Twins usually don't win these nailbiters. When I saw it was 1-1 in the 8th, I didn't bother to continue.
  16. I like the Tom Kelly approach. Play good defense and run the bases well--do the small things well. He put the best product on the field with what he was given, which sometimes meant a group of pretty poor players took the field, but they played hard and played as well as could be expected given the circumstances.
  17. I still say why not pitch to Luis in that situation. Benintendi is basically the only guy who can hurt you besides Quero... Anyway, we escaped against an awful team. (Yes, I'm complaining about a win. I like quality baseball.) I will say that our defense was better than theirs. To me, that was the big take away. I can forgive a lot for good defense.
  18. Why not walk Benintendi? If he hit it out, the Twins were toast anyway?
  19. The one guy you don't want to face on the WS is Benintendi. Astoundingly, defense saved the Twins instead of killing them...
  20. Unfortunately, the last big winning streak was in July of last year...with three of those wins coming against the semi-pro White Sox...
  21. One loss away from the dumpster fire 🔥 of 9 games below .500. There is no pot-o-gold at the end of that tunnel, and despite being picked to win the division by many sports nerds, it's going to take more than a box of Lucky Charms just to struggle back to somewhere around .500.
  22. The Twins are now one loss away from the dreaded 9 games under .500, which is the point of no return.
  23. It's always the same things...you can list them, but I don't have the stomach for it right now...
