  1. I love that this Twins team plays with a little bit of an edge and chirps at or back at other teams. Don't back down. Teams look at us as the front-runner this year and seem to play every game like it's their personal world series. Talk sh*t, it is your world series.
  2. Alright, Maeda... 1 pitch... important to steady here and stay in a groove.
  3. I guess I disagree on the logic. Being a virtual lock for the playoffs allows you the luxury of being able to explore non-short term goals given that short-term actions don't have the same consequences as it would if you were fighting for your playoff spot.
  4. Counterpoint, Jeffers had similar numbers to AK last season at double A. In addition, Kirilloff's numbers last year are better than they seem on the surface given that he was recovering from an injury that typically saps power well into the season. As the season went on, his numbers improved quite considerably. Also, it does not really if he helps more this season given that the Twins are a virtual lock to make the playoffs. If Kirilloff is a bigger part of the long-term plans than Wade/Cave Jr. & giving him playing time helps speed up his development... it would be a huge mistake to not bring him up.
  5. Sure, again not the point though. In fact, that would make my point. Not all pitchers get rattled by speed and/or baserunners. However, that’s a skill. So on the flip side, if you were able to quantify it... that’s value you could add to pitchers as well. Now maybe a quick and dirty way to look at it is splits from the stretch and windup for SPing, but I’m also interested in looking at how good of a runner the baserunner is which is much harder. Anyways it was just a thought. If you want to discount it feel free.
  6. This has nothing to do with my statement. I also don’t understand how hypothesizing about value that hasn’t been quantified has anything to do with what you just said. It’s clear that pitchers pay more attention to some runners versus others. It’s clear that the reason they pay attention to runners is because of the likelihood of stealing a base. It’s also clear that it affects, some pitchers, their delivery to the hitter. What value does that have? You didn’t come close to the touching upon that despite refuting my post.
  7. I think there’s something that hasn’t been quantified yet about the value of elite runners splitting pitchers attention. Not sure if anyone has attempted it yet.
  8. Miguel Sano’s last 130 games: 29 2Bs 2 3Bs 39 HRs 91 RBIs 91 runs ~.345 OBP and .900+ OPS Bat this man up in the order!
  9. I don’t know where to post this, but does anyone know else stan Lamonte Wade? His plate approach is so valuable
  10. I think asking Dobnak to learn an entirely new pitch is a tall task. He would need to develop a 4 seam to pitch up in the zone similar to Maeda and even then asking that to be an effective pitch given his lack of velocity seems like a stretch. Working the edges of the plate, sure is something that he could do, but I'm not sure he doesn't do that already and your initial post was about looking to Maeda about pitching at the top of the zone. Maeda has a different pitch mix. I'm not sure it's something Dobnak can replicate... though there may be other things he could do.
  11. I don't agree with this at all. Dobnak's pitches all have huge downward break. I'm not sure that you want him pitching at the top of the zone unless you are advocating for a new pitch mix. I don't think you have to worry about Dobnak's HR rate, though there will be times that HRs are hit off of him.
  12. *Having a healthy Byron Buxton is paying dividends. Buxton is the best defensive CF in the league and it also allows you to move Kepler, who is above average in CF, but elite in the CO spot. Rosario doesn't have elite range, but his arm is great... with Buxton covering him that OF defense is great... Buxton can shade towards Rosario if needed. The IF defense has been lights out between the positioning and accurate throwing of Polanco/Arraez, Sano being more athletic and rangy than a normal 1B, and even with Donaldson out Marwin/Adrianza are way more rangy and mobile than a normal 3B.
  13. I still think that unfortunately, he doesn't have a long term future on this team. That is, unless you are choosing Rosario over Buxton and doubling down on Kepler as your long term CF. Kepler is younger, a better fielder, as good or better as a hitter (even a more patient Rosario) and more affordable for longer. Given Buxton's ability as a CF and the fact that he is younger and more cost controllable... I think the Twins still prioritize Buxton in the near-term over Rosario. Really the only shot that Rosario has at staying on the Twins roster is if Nelson Cruz announces his retirement and the Twins prioritize Rosario over Sano... which I guess is theoretically something that could be a conversation.
  14. This is breaking the rules of the title of this post a little bit as it combines numbers from the 2019 season... but they are definitely fun numbers... so maybe we can let it slide? Byron Buxton's last 102 games which span parts of 2019 & 2020 look as follows: .267 avg - .312 obp - .531 slg - .843 OPS31 2Bs - 4 3Bs -15 HRs - 50 XBHs56 RBIs - 57 runs - 15 SBs Pro-rated to 162 games (you can then take these numbers are pro-rate them to whatever number of games you feel comfortable with because I know some folks don't like the per 162 game data manipulation)… .312 OBP - .843 OPS50 2Bs - 6 3Bs - 24 HRs89 RBIs - 91 runs - 24 SBs Not bad for a gold glove CF who is hitting from the 9 spot! The other fun fact is that he has 50 XBHs compared to just 35 singles over the last 102 games... XBH MACHINE! The significance of a 102 game stretch with an .843 OPS while playing gold glove defense from the CF position is that is close to being "not a small sample size" especially when sustained for meaningful stretches over multiple seasons.
  15. Great post. I agree with you 100%. I guess the only thing you can say is if mechanic optimization to improve velocity leads also to a command issues.... ....however this ultimately makes me optimistic about Berrios and willing to let him use this regular season to figure out his command issues hoping a couple mphs of more velocity raises his ceiling. Thanks for the post. I learned something.
  16. I agree with your logic. I think you could send Smeltzer back if you think Alcala could flash. The reason being Hill/Pineda/Bailey will be coming back who theoretically are all better than Smeltzer or at least ahead on the pecking order because of vet status. Smeltzer won’t be kept ahead of them. So keep Alcala for as long as possible to see what we have... my strategy anyway...
  17. Avila takes good ABs. He’s not that great but he’s a great back up
  18. Polanco is noticeably better in the field this season. Cool to see that kind of development. Means big things for his long term trajectory. I’d go as far to say that he’s been borderline elite with the glove this season.
  19. I feel robbed of watching Buxton try and leg out a triple on a ball down the third base line
  20. To complete the catch you need to complete a football move, we all know this.
  21. Kepler bomba? Calling it
  22. Cool fact - Dobnak’s fastball had the second most vertical drop out of any pitcher in the majors last season
  23. Arraez went on a hitting slump purposefully getting outs towards the right side of the field just to allow the opposing team to shift him so he could easily slap balls down the line. Where’s the lie?
  24. Baldelli should be questioned on his logic behind recent game play decision making. I want to hear why he’s making certain decisions
