He claimed to be 16, I think closer to 2 1/2 years older. Not that it makes a major difference. It affected many more kids than just him, and I wouldn't be surprised if its a bigger issue than what was uncovered. I think there has been lots of history of handlers and parents claiming kids were younger than they really were. Albert Pujols could be a prime example. This seems to be par for the course of the Twins, saying I think I can get a discount on a player who has good talent. He very well could amount to nothing. There are definite question marks on the parents and handlers of this kid, so the environment may be a bit questionable to say the least, thats not to say anything about the kids ethics. For 500k which is 6.83% of the budget, I am ok with the gamble.

I fully agree with you the 40 man is cluttered with individuals who are not cutting it and I would be more than fine if we were to cut them. There are a couple mentioned above I would be willing to give a little more run. 1. Pereda - seems to be the ideal 3rd catcher. Can keep him in AAA and bring him up if we have an injury. The defense was solid and he made some good contact last year. Yes he is older just like Jackson, but that isn't the negative being a backup catcher. 2. McCusker - I am on the fence on. Yes he struggled some last year. But I would give him an equal chance to figuring it out compared to Roden. Sometimes it takes some time to adjust to the tougher level, sometimes they never figure it out. The rest I am fine with cutting for rule V, free agent signings or trades. For pitchers - Adams, Ohl and maybe Raya. So ultimately I do see us having the ability to chop about another 4-7 players from the 40 man.

We pick 4th most likely. Could we see the 1st base platoon be Blaze Jordan or David McCabe? You also would have Burkholder or Mullins you could put in the bullpen or as a starter if we trade some pitching. Maybe they take a chance on Pinango - 90% exit velocity. 80% contact rate - but just refuses to swing the bat. If we take a player it is most likely one of the first 4. We have holes at both rp and 1st base so I do agree RP could be a pick, but I wouldn't discount a 1st base pick either. I would have them ranked 1.Mullins 2. Burkholder 3. Jordan 4. Pinango 5. McCabe One other intriguing name - Could we grab Birdsell again.

They already hinted at Clemens being our 1st baseman. Either as the true starter or platoon. As to relief pitching, I will be very curious what they do. In general they don't spend a lot of resources in the bullpen, but they depleted the bullpen. I am expecting some trades and/or free agent signings. We brought back Topa so I am assuming 2/3 spots to fill. And had 1 minor trade for Orze 1. Sands 2. Topa 3. Orze 4. Funderburk ??? ??? ??? ??? On the 40 man you have Festa, Klein, Morris, Ohl, Raya, Rojas they could transition to the bullpen. I think they keep Prielipp, Matthews and most likely Rojas as starters. My guess is they fill 2 spots internally and 2 more by trades or free agency.

Taking Stock of Minnesota Twins' 2024 Draft Class
bunsen82 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I am left scratching my head on this entire article with more questions or rebukes than agreeing. 1. Culpepper - I think we can all agree his stock is way up and he looks like a long term option at SS. The defense is solid to plus and the bat was better than expected and plays extremely well at SS. 2. Debarge - I would have flat to slightly down. Both Culpepper and Debarge were picked for their bat tools, Yes the defense and speed was nice, but the bat was no where near what I was expected for a player that was supposed to have high contact rates and low strikeouts. 3. Amick - I don't know how anyone could come away from this season and not see an up arrow if not massive up arrow. He came into the system with 2 major question marks. 1 was defense. 2 was lots of holes in his swings and concern about offspeed. At high A he had a slash line of .310/.418/.455 (good for .873 OPS). He also had major concerns on his defense and his speed and reaction and overall defense was better than expected. He went from an expected below average defender at 3rd, to respectable, and possibly average to above average defender. The Twins are also trying him at 1st base. The 2 slight downers on the season - were 1. a decrease in power which could have been due to his wrist injury and 2. his AFL numbers 1-30. But lets look further into his fall league - even as bad/unlucky struggled - he still had a .293 OBP. The ugly was 20 strikeouts in 30 at bats (so only put the ball in play 10 at bats). For SSS, I don't know how much we would want to look into this. Is this a precursor of things to come, maybe. Even still, for a player picked at 60 who had major concerns, I don't know how anyone can come away with not being extremely pleased with his season. This one just makes me scratch my head. You will give an up arrow to debarge but a down arrow to Amick when Amick had much better stats at the same level. 4. Dasan Hill - way up. He has legit stuff and as he continues to mature the sky is the limit. 5. Ferrer - this is another one that scratches my head. Yes the bat struggled some. I cannot deny that, however when we drafted him in the 4th round it was as an outfielder. As an outfielder the bat absolutely does not play. However it appears we are converting him back to a catcher. Considering we were playing him at multiple positions and now at catcher, I am willing to give Ferrer a pass this year. So arrow for me is neutral. He showed flashes but had a couple rough months. 6. I missed Diaw. I would agree up - I would venture to say way up. The bat plays extremely well. The only concern for me is health.- 22 replies

Twins Add Catching Depth with Early Offseason Swap
bunsen82 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It’s that you can use a piece for another. He may not be the end game. He has a little more value than Eeles. We sure do seem to like to ignore hot stretches in this forum. -

Most likely he is the backup, and I am surprised how many are dismissing this years stats. We also can’t rule out he is part of a bigger deal like IKF. -

Gasper and Roden. However neither one had decent stats last year even with increased run. However, both Clemens and Jackson were positive WAR players last year. That is the difference - both player showed some flashes that they can may be turning it around as they enter late 20's to 30's. Might be decent pieces for a couple years. Their is no positive with Kiersey. I don't see value in Kriedler or Outman either and would have dfa'd McCusker as well. Throw in Gasper as he just is not an MLB player. If you want to keep him in the system fine, no one is picking him up. We still need significant changes in the bullpen. -
Twins Add Catching Depth with Early Offseason Swap
bunsen82 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So the options for the backup C for next year - were Pereda or signing someone or in this case trading for one. Jackson seems to be in the mold of Clemens . Great at AAA - struggled at MLB level until last year- but had a decent stats for this year, .7 WAR. So I don't feel the synopsis above is quite fair. Yes it was 100 at bats, small sample size, but .220/.290/.763 slash line which is much better than we got from Vazquez. For a player we picked up for a minor league contract who is blocked in our system - it is actually a pretty decent move- if not a sexy one. Its a solid flip for depth than now allows Pereda to be the 3rd option which gives us pretty decent depth for next year. -
Buxton could have some slight regression - Beyond that 1. Ryan has improved every year marginally since 2022. His biggest issue is maintaining his stuff later in the year. This year he lasted longer than any other year. I expect marginal improvement again this year. 2. Clemens - I wouldn't be surprised if triple slash numbers aren't slightly better than what he showed this year. Those saying he had 1 good month need to go look at July and Sept. I could argue he had 3 really bad months - 1 great month - 1 really good month and 1 good month. If he can avoid his June and August - he doesn't need a great May month. Give me his consistent September numbers and we will all be pretty happy. 3. Simeon Woods Richardson is an extremely smart pitcher. His fastball improved to an average of 93.3 with a higher slot. I wouldn't be surprised if he tweaks it slightly more this year. He knows how to work though even with lower velocity stuff. I am fairly confident he will be solid again this year. He is in the mold of Sonny Gray. I have more confidence in SWR than any other pitcher not named Ryan.

Abel is our best shot at rookie of the year for next year. The year after we should have a ton of different possibilities if they are still eligible. Jenkins, Gonzalez, Culpepper unless someone becomes a starter already early in the season. Abel ended strong and tends to improve each season. I have high hopes for him next year. Maybe not Rookie of the Year, but a very solid year.

You are calling it small sample size. You are also not allowing for any further improvement in his stuff. He was solid at AAA and solid in a small sample size. If we can do significantly better than him in the bullpen great. As of now my guess is we will have 1-2 players of worse quality than him in the bullpen this year - or more.

I am firmly of the opinion Fedko and Rosario could either get you some decent reliever help by themselves or a package. I don't see a reason to leave value on the table available for someone to poach. I still have 0 understanding why Gasper, Fitzgerald, Kiersey, Outman or Kreidler - (we don't need both) - remain on the roster. Then we let a decent reliever in Lawyerson go. For a bullpen that had holes, he was a solid plug of a spot in my opinion. We have 7 spots open currently for free agents or to add young players. I had 8 as must adds in my opinion. Gonzalez, Priellip, Morris, Rojas, Mendez, Culpepper, Rosario, Fedko.

"Rather than go with a candidate who might challenge the status quo—one who might push back against flawed thinking, one who brings an outside voice, or one who demands excellence at all levels" So who exactly was the coach you had in mind. You call it flawed thinking - so then what is proper thinking? Yes we struggled this year, as a whole the records show the Twins have had pretty decent records during the Falvey era. Yes I don't see us getting a generational coach, but I do think he can be a very solid coach, a winning coach, and with the right roster could help get you deep in the playoffs. It is clear the majority of the people here won't be happy until the Pohlads and Falvey are gone. I can see a vision with some of the prospects coming up. Several with better hit tools that the current players on the team. I enjoyed the bomba era, but that philosophy doesn't work if you strike out to much and don't have base runners on base to put up crooked numbers, and then strike out with multiple players on base killing the inning. As a whole I would ask you to give the coach and the team a chance. It will likely be a work in progress, but I am hoping they can play hard competitive baseball. At this point that is all I am asking for and that doesn't even mean a .500 winning percentage. I want to see players improving and having fun. Ultimately the only way we get better is everyone playing to their potential. I hope Falvey can construct a decent team for Shelton to work with. We will know more in November/December whether this is a rebuild or a continued teardown.

According to trade value calculators - we have much more value in Roden and Rojas than Varland. If we truly wanted Varland back - I think we wouldn't have to give up nearly as much to get him back.

Looking Back at the 2019 Twins Draft Class
bunsen82 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The 2019 class had the potential to be exceptional - even excluding Cavaco. Steer, Wallner and Julien all flashed the ability 1 they just haven’t been able to maintain excellence. Canterino has the talent just not the health. Varland and Hedrick are solid relievers. Things just didn’t come together.- 47 replies

Haha - has anyone looked at Amicks stats for fall ball. 0/.348/0. 5 walks and 3 HBP. Not getting hits - if he did he would be crushing fall ball.

Ashbury - I fully get it. Amick was a pick that had lots of question marks. The 2024 draft was bereft of players with good hit tools. We got 2 of the better ones in Debarge (who still has questions) and Culpepper. I still remember 1 draft analyst who basically said Amick was one of the worst picks - basically because he couldn't lay off secondary pitches and was a horrible defender. He has answered most of those questions. For a number 60 pick especially for hitters you are getting to a range where there will be questions especially in that draft. As of now I think Amick definitely has MLB potential. He is are best current answer as a long term solution at either 3rd or 1st. This next year will tell us a lot about his development. If he can blend the hit tool that he showed this year with the power that he does have potentially at AA, he instantly becomes a top prospect in the system. You can obviously see most were not impressed by the pick. There wasn't a Keaschall type player available in the 60 range of the 2024 draft. It was a gamble that so far has paid off. Hopefully it will continue to.

Billy Amick has had a rough fall in a small sample size - you can't discount what he did in 244 plate appearances at high A - .310/.418/.455. He was never a sure fire college player. He was a player that had a lot of questions - but he had a lot of power. He comes to the Twins - the questions on defense and hit tool actually he has answered quite well - the power wasn't there. Now some of that could have been the injury. If he can put the power and hit tool together - he becomes a legit 3rd base or 1st base option we really have no other answers for in the system.

I don’t question the kids drive. The kid is playing 3 defensive positions - working hard and improving. He started out very rough to start the season. Was the best player on the team for a stretch then cooled off a bit. I think you keep him at the same level, see if he can dominate then move him up. As to position I am conflicted. His best position long term is probably outfield, but as Tony said even a loaded fall ball league he is a shortstop. Let him keep playing then move 3 positions for now. I am in no rush to determine his position.

Arbitrary Thoughts: Joe Ryan
bunsen82 replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ryan is the one pitcher they can get massive value for to help not only this year but also potentially prospects. As long as still have Lopez you have a pitcher who can be your #1 for reasonable value and that you won't get a big return on. I hope they keep both, but I depending on the return I don't think I will be disappointed if they trade Ryan.- 51 replies
