Dear Falvey, You Can't Trade Away Joe Ryan
Otaknam replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Totally agree! Teams are built behind pitching. Starters who consistently give you six innings plus with and ERA under 3 are too valuable to trade, unless the team has bottomed out and is in rebuild mode.- 41 replies

So, finally, past midseason, Rocco has figured out that the team with a poor offense and minimal power needs to steal an occasional base, try hit and run once in awhile, and be more aggressive on the bases. Also that the bullpen is a strength, so remove all star Ryan after five innings and 86 pitches because Rocco does not trust Ryan to give him another inning. No wonder this team is floundering!

Trading Duran for a package that includes Tiedemann, who is coming off of TJ surgery, would be management malfeasance. Yesavage would be a nice piece, however, along with another top prospect. The Twins need more starting pitching, and Yesavage fits the bill. I do think Duran will be traded somewhere if the team keeps sputtering.

Twins Trade Fiction: Imagining a Ryan-for-Duran Swap
Otaknam replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Solid starting pitching is the hardest position to fill. Ryan is their best starter this year and is deserving of the All Star team. So this trade weakens the pitching staff, as no starter seems to be stepping up in the high minors. Trading Duran is much more likely, as they can have someone like Jax close. Pass on this trade.- 14 replies

Castro is likely gone, given the downward trend of the team. He is a quality jack of all trades player who should bring a quality AA prospect, hopefully a lefty starter with some projection. Duran could be traded as well, since a losing team has minimal need for a high end closer.

Not sure why they keep Ohl’s innings around four if they are utilizing him as a starter. Given the dearth of starters in the bigs due to injuries, why not stretch him out to see if he can handle the workload? The Twins need the depth. The bigger issue is the apparent lack of high end minor league starters at AA or higher. I’m hoping they draft a college arm who in the upcoming draft who could put himself in position for a call up by next year. Kyle Bremner or Gage Wood, who threw a no hitter with 19 strikeouts in the College World Series, might be available.

I think Duran should and will be traded if this downward spiral continues. An elite closer is a luxury if there aren’t enough games to close. And he’s not a rental player, so the trade package should be very good. And dealing either Larnach or Wallner makes sense because they are similar players, though Wallner may have more power potential. Either EROD or Jenkins could be ready as outfield replacements IF they can stay healthy,a big IF!

This is an unserious idea that shouldn’t make it to this website. This only makes sense if an excellent defensive third baseman with below average pop is the missing piece on a real contender, like Mike Pagliarulo in 1991. And realistically the Twins aren’t a serious playoff contender. Otherwise, this solves nothing and would cost a Keaschall, Schobel, Winoker or someone whose upside may be much higher than the light hitting Hayes. No thanks!

The Twins need right handed power bats, so hopefully Fedko keeps it up and puts himself into the conversation for a ML spot. Klein might be another little known pitcher that the team develops into a big league starter, like Ober. Chaney’s history makes him seem like he’s just a depth piece for the minors, but who knows.

Inaction Has Become the Twins' Identity
Otaknam replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We now know what this team is, and that it’s not very good. . Last year was great until it wasn’t. They thought this year would be similar to the first 120 games last year, but here we are. No trade would change this trajectory, but would cost young talent they can’t afford to lose. Injuries to Lopez and Matthews, Ober’s struggles, and lack of starter progress in AAA, has exposed this team as a pretender. Add to that the always injured Lewis, inept offense, a bullpen that suddenly is imploding, and we have the prescription for bottoming out. The only brights spots are Ryan, Buxton, and the development of Lee. And Keaschall provides some hope for the future. Otherwise it’s just a dumpster fire. It’s clear that they need to reboot this team, starting with getting a haul for closer Duran, and maybe a couple of others who are actually performing well. -
I hope he is available at 16 and they draft him. The Twins thought they had enough starter depth, but found out they don’t. They seem to prefer drafting college pitchers after the first couple of rounds, probably because hitters are easier to project than pitchers who are prone to potential arm problems. But a college starter like Wood could benefit from the Twins developmental system, and maybe add a couple ticks to his fastball.

Silly article. The TWINS are a long way from competing for a long playoff run. Trading your top minor league prospects for a fifth day starter, regardless of how good he is, doesn’t make this team better than Pittsburgh.

It’s a fair point. Not sure where they would play Gasper, but this team needs an offensive jolt! Kiersey likely won’t provide it. Right now they look like they did for the last 41 games of 2024, lifeless and dead in the water. And they don’t have Lopez, making it even worse.

From a 13 ga,me winning streak to what looks lopike another free fall, similar to the last 41 games last year. The pitching has blown up, two starters out, Lewis injured AGAIN, and below average offense. If things don’t improve fast, I think they are sellers and need to admit a rebuild is coming. Larnach, France, Bader, Vasquez, Paddock, and any bullpen arms could be on the block. Even the high leverage arms like Duran, Jax, Sands, and Stewart could be considered for the right price.
-
It’s worth a shot. SWR can’t be trusted, and, at best, can govern you 4-5 innings. If Civale can be acquired for a low level prospect, why not? That gives Morris, Lewis, and Raya more time to figure it out. And ,with his head scratching contract based on minimal success, isn’t a major league pitcher IMO.
-
Hopefully they don’t think Dobnak is an answer. His signing several years ago for almost $10 million over four years is the biggest head scratcher for this front office. His starts typically lasted four innings of mediocre or worse pitching.

A nice group that hopefully stays healthy, as TJ surgery is way too common with young flamethrowers these days. The TWINS haven’t had a true number one starter, like a Verlander, for a long time, maybe since Liriano. I don’t think you are a serious playoff contender without an ace or at least two number 2’s, who can prevent long losing streaks. Hopefully one of these guys can emerge to fill that roll.

That’s an accurate summary if this team. Somewhat better than middling because of pitching, which now has two starter out, including their presumed ace in Lopez. And mediocre offense that needs everyone to be above average to make it work. I think the team will win around 85 games, but I hope they surprise. But definitely not a threat to make a serious playoff run.
-
At best the Twins are a fringe playoff team. They are definitely not a World Series contender, especially considering the mega salary teams, like the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, etc., that make a mockery of competitive balance that MLB doesn’t care about. The Twins’ offense is mediocre, and injuries to Lopez and Matthews will test their pitching depth. Any trade would need to better position them for next year and beyond.
