    Agree with that statement 100% ! The stats don't lie, and the variety of stats and ways of analysis are no longer an industry secret. Why penalize or criticize teams for finally being smarter about the ways they spend money?

    What's the consensus on Morrison with the glove at first base? Can he field the position well? Is he an asset at that position or a liability?

    LaMarre has indeed made an impact thus far. I only vaguely recall seeing his name prior to the Twins signing him, but he'll be nice insurance in AAA if we need any reinforcements during the season. Stassi also a couple of hits the other day and is another one of those "slim chance" guys who could be called up at some point during the season.

    I don't think you absolutely "Need" to have that ace, but it certainly provides a great deal of comfort and gives the team more confidence. I think the Astros showed that last year after they picked up Verlander. All of a sudden they looked unbeatable. And that proved to be true.

    Man, another very interesting installment. Brings back lots of fun memories. Keep 'em coming! I had forgotten about some of those trades (Salas for Niekro; Butcher and Smithson for Gary Ward). So many ex-players end up being coaches or managers, but I've never heard anything more about Shane Mack. Does anyone know what he did after retiring?

    I'm one of those "old school" guys who are floored/gobsmacked/amazed at the high salaries the players are commanding nowadays. I know, I know: it's the nature of the times and the economics of the game today. But still ... wow! All that said, it DOES make sense for the Twins to try and extend Buxton as soon as they can. In my mind, he ranks as the team's most valuable player for the next decade.

    Gotta give Gibson credit for having a good attitude and putting such a difficult process in perspective. Hope he can put up those better second-half numbers the entire season this year.

    Well, it's obviously not an easy decision for the front office.There is no denying that Dozier has been very valuable to the Twins, especially the past two seasons. But given his age, the potential length of a new contract, and the quality of the prospects coming through the system who can replace him .... I'd say "Thanks For Everything" and let him pursue his free agent dreams.

    Oops, my mistake on that one. For some bizarre reason I wrote Gibson when I meant Hughes. Time for me to cut back on this beer consumption!

    I think your hunch could be correct. It's early days yet, but if Gibson and Sanchez both look healthy and posting respectable numbers, I could see them both in the rotation to start the season. And for me, Gibson is the biggest shocker. I didn't think he had a chance after his multi-setbacks the past few years, but I hope he proves me wrong.

    I also agree: very good article. Hopefully, Polanco can match his second-half numbers from 2017 for the entire coming season. Remember how down on him people were earlier last summer? And then he caught fire. I hope everything clicked and the fire continues!

    As nice as it is to have Grossman putting up good OBP numbers, I still can't see him bringing back much in a trade. Better to keep him than Vargas at this point.

    Imagine if both Hughes and Sanchez have a bunch of stellar spring training outings? Things could get wonderfully weird --- in a good way --- in trying to determine the starting rotation to start the season.

    Yeah, plenty of good arms lost in the past year, but as others have noted, the health issues were the deciding factor. Can't lose any sleep over it, these things are so unpredictable. Thinking about Mark Portugal also reminded me of another pitcher who seemed to thrive after he left Minnesota: LaTroy Hawkins. Of course, he was mostly a starter during his days with the Twins, but did much better after he was used in relief.

    Yeah, we'll all be anxiously waiting to see if Morrison can replicate his performance from last year, which keep in mind was FAR above anything he had previously produced. Was his 2017 production a freaky outlier, or the sign that he has finally matured and figured it all out?

    I can't see either Vargas or Grossman having much trade value at all to other teams. Too many other players with similar skills still looking for jobs. I'd imagine one or the other, or both, being put on waivers if there is a numbers crunch by the end of spring training.

    Spring training of 1987 ended up on a low note for me, the Twins having cut two of my favorite players at that time: Mickey Hatcher and Ron Washington. But Gladden was a VERY good addition to the team that year (Hatcher did very well for himself the next year with the Dodgers in their own World Series appearance) The rest, as they say, is history.

    I hope Aybar is not actually "competing with Ehire Adrianza" for a utility infield spot. As insurance stashed in AAA or if something weird happens with Sano to start the season, it seems like a safe enough signing. But I'd much prefer to see Adrianza in the main infielder utility role.

    I was impressed with what Castro gave the Twins last year, both as catcher (and pitch framer!) and hitter. He also seems like someone who can help a young pitcher such as Berrios mature and gain confidence. Garvey, I'm not quite as confident with as the backup. I hope he proves me wrong and thrives in the role this year, but I'd feel more comfortable with a veteran backing up Castro.

    I don't understand the reasoning or the motivation behind a move like this, but Chargois is a guy I would hate for the Twins to lose. He looked great 2 years ago.

    I'm a member of the Eternally Optimistic Club, so I'm hoping that all those things --- good health, a new team and change of scenery, new pitching coach, good outfielders --- will factor into Odorizzi having a good season. Gotta believe!

    Ouch! That may be a bit harsh! I go back and forth on Gordon's potential, and whether or not he is overrated,. But I still have hope that he's going to be a solid, maybe above average, starter for the major league team in the next year or two. This is going to be another key year for him to show what he's got. Just gotta be patient and remember that he's still a bit young.

    I keep hoping the "Falvine" brain-trust knows what it's doing, or at least has some sort of rational plan for getting the Twins to the next stage of the playoffs. Perhaps the most puzzling move so far this off-season was choosing Tyler Kinley in the Rule 5 draft. Will be waiting to see if that pickup amounts to anything remotely impressive.

    For some bizarre reason, instead of reading your post as referring to Santana, I had a mental lapse that the player you were talking about was Santiago. Whew! Thankfully, that's not the case!
