  1. Finding a trade for a 38 year old pitcher that has been truly terrible for 3 straight months is amazing.
  2. Twins up with Ty Madden still sitting there.
  3. It's tough to be competitive when the pitching staff gives up 28 runs in 3 games. Any remaining hope that the Twins could turn things around has to be completely gone now.
  4. I think they expected this to be the season that the minor league pitching pipeline started to show results, unfortunately most of the near major league ready pitching prospects have been injured. Duran, Canterino, Enlow, and Sands are currently on the IL and Balazovic started so late that he was not a realistic option up to this point. The best case scenario for the rest of the season is that 4 or 5 out of Duran, Canterino, Balazovic, Winder, Sands, and Vallimont make their debut later this year. Once we start seeing these guys in the majors we will have a better idea of how well the front office has done at identifying and developing pitching talent.
  5. My impression of the Twins plan coming into the season was that Happ and Shoemaker were placeholders until the Twins top pitching prospects were ready. Unfortunately Happ/Shoemaker were both terrible and the next level of mediocre depth fell apart (Dobnak, Thorpe, and Smeltzer). To make matters worse, Maeda and Pineda have had injury issues that have limited their effective innings. Adding insult to injury, the top pitching prospects have been injured (Duran and Canterino) or had a very late start with inconsistent results (Balazovic). Basically every facet of the starting pitching has collapsed this season leaving no way to salvage the rotation. I don't know that anyone could have predicted the complete meltdown on every level, but some of the issues were not surprising (Happ/Shoemaker disaster). The front office needs to put a much better plan in place for 2022 if they hope to be competitive.
  6. The twins front office has made a number of mistakes on the edges of the 40 man roster (Zack Littell is another example), but I'm not sure they are worse than the majority of teams in the league. The mistakes that frustrate me the most are the trades of Luis Gil and Huscar Ynoa. Trading them for Jake Cave and 1 game of Jaime Garcia were blunders that are looking pretty bad today.
  7. I doubt the Twins pitching staff is the worst in team history, but they are definitely in the running for having the biggest gap between expectations and results. The most frustrating part is that even though Happ, Shoemaker, Dobnak, and Colome have all been brutally bad they are still making appearances.
  8. It never made sense to have two left handed hitting fourth outfielders in Wade and Cave, so getting a guy who might be useful is likely a worthwhile move.
  9. I would definitely give Blankenhorn/Gordon the first shot at the second utility player. Even if they don't work out, it is fairly easy to find guys who can fill the role on the waiver wire. Even if Gonzalez only costs $1-2M that is still money that could be better spent elsewhere.
  10. I can see a 1-year deal being a good thing. Simmons age and health would make him a bit risky on a multi-year deal, plus Royce Lewis is likely going to be ready at some point this season.
  11. Coming into the off-season Simmons was about the only realistic position player upgrade I thought would be worthwhile, so I am extremely happy with the signing (this is infinitely better than bringing back Marwin). Now if the Twins can just add one good playoff caliber starting pitcher, the off-season will be a big success. I'm also hopeful that this is finally the year where the front offices supposed skill at drafting and developing starting pitchers results in at least one rookie starter forcing their way into the rotation.
  12. I find it extremely hard to believe that the Twins can't find an upgrade to Marwin. My guess is there are at least half a dozen players who could fill the same role with significantly better production while not costing all that much.
  13. At the time I thought the Santana deal was ridiculously bad for the Twins and time has proven that to be true. Bill Smith just wasn't up to the task and was taken advantage of by the Mets. If he had a bit more backbone he would have just kept Santana and gone all in for a playoff run. Getting 200 innings from Santana plus at least a couple playoff starts would have been significantly more valuable than the crap package they got back.
  14. The biggest impact move the Twins could make for the every day lineup would be finding a better hitting coach. Just getting Garver, Polanco, Sano, Kepler, and Arraez closer to their 2019 performances would be a huge improvement.
  15. Rooker being out is really unfortunate since he is the only major league ready right handed corner outfielder in the Twins system. While I love the talent I wish one of Kepler, Rosario, Cave, Wade, Kirilloff, or Larnach hit right handed.
  16. I'd give Blankenhorn a shot, he can't be worse that Gonzalez/Adrianze have been this season. It would also help evaluate whether Blankenhorn should keep his 40 man roster spot this off-season. Gordon has had no luck the past few years, this is probably the third or fourth time he could have been called up but he's missed all the opportunities due to his health.
  17. I think it will be really interesting to see if Falvey can repeat the Cleveland success with pitcher drafting and development. One somewhat strange occurrence that should be worth following is that in 2019 the Twins drafted and signed 16 college pitchers in rounds 6-25.
  18. In terms of position players and relievers the Twins farm system has been a great pipeline of talent. Unfortunately, there has been a distinct lack of starting pitchers being able to establish themselves at the major league level. The only guy since Berrios who has had moderate success has been Dobnak and he an undrafted free agent signed out of an independent league. Way too many former top 100 prospects have flamed out in the last 5 years including Meyer, Stewart, Gonsalves, Jay, and Romero. I'm hoping the next crop of Duran, Balazovic, Enlow, Canterino, Sands, and Chalmers has more success.
  19. If the Twins send down both Cave/Wade and only use Gonzalez at 2B/3B then there is plenty of opportunity for both Kirilloff and Rooker. I could see Kirilloff playing most days while giving Buxton/Rosario/Kepler/Sano a rest with Rooker starting against lefties (and being a right handed bat off the bench).
  20. Hopefully this means we'll see some of the prospects get a chance. Of the guys on the 40-man roster or those who need to be added after the season I'd definitely look at giving Kirilloff, Rooker, Blankenhorn, and Duran a chance. They likely wouldn't be worse than Cave, Wade, Adrianza, Vargas, or repeated bullpen games.
  21. The guy that I'd go after is Robbie Ray. Put him in the bullpen and let him work with Wes Johnson (or let him start if Odorizzi/Hill/Bailey can't stay healthy). If his issues can be fixed he would be an interesting option for the play-offs either starting or out of the pen.
  22. I'd go with Kirilloff, he can play some 1B as well as filling in as the fourth outfielder.
  23. The Twins should definitely give him a shot, it's not like Smeltzer/Thorpe are making it a tough call.
  24. Dobnak is saving the Twins over the first part of the season. It's hard to believe the team is 10-2 and has gotten a grand total of 10 innings out of Odorizzi/Hill/Bailey (and Pineda).
  25. Here's hoping Donaldson and Sano get on track. The team scored 27 runs in 3 games while getting nothing from those guys, so I'm excited to see what the lineup can do once they start hitting.
