  1. Fixed this for you, Ash
  2. Oh, the Twins could have bid on Bellinger but in the end, the Cubs would have just bid more. And if you get to the point where you've outbid the Cubs on Bellinger, you've probably really screwed up.
  3. Eh, also true but mostly irrelevant. The Cubs have more money and more need, they were ultimately going to land Bellinger. No one was strongly linked to him other than the North Siders for about four months.
  4. He opted for a Correa-style deal, which is something of a surprise. Kudos to the Cubs for holding firm on their ceiling. Bellinger landed exactly where everyone thought he would land. The Twins never had a shot at him.
  5. Game thread is going to be here, folks:
  6. I don't disagree with the principle of this blog entry but I think it's worth pointing out that other baseball costs have risen dramatically over the past 15 years. Minor leaguers are paid *way* more now (good), front offices are *much* larger, investment in tech and infrastructure is much higher, the list goes on... It takes a lot more revenue to run all the non-payroll parts of a major league franchise than it did in the past. With that said, all we have to do is look at the Braves, the only team that has a legal responsibility to open their books to the public. And they're wildly profitable. Costs have risen, to be sure, but so have profits.
  7. I don't think the two things are linked. I think the Twins are out on Bellinger for purely monetary reasons. Personally, I'm okay with that. Bellinger is a lefty hitter - god knows the Twins don't need more of those in the OF - and I don't trust his bat to play at first at that elevated dollar amount. He just isn't a great fit here, IMO.
  8. John Fisher's current strategy of relocating the Oakland Athletics:
  9. I watched Santana a lot with the Brewers last year. He's going to start declining at literally any minute but he's still capable of taking good, professional at-bats from both sides of the plate. He also plays a nice first base. His numbers won't light up the room but he's the kind of guy you're very comfortable putting in the 5-7 spots depending on matchup.
  10. I'm with Matt on this one, the Pirates don't stand much of a chance. The Reds and Brewers have as much young talent as they do and are starting off with a higher floor. The Cubs roster will not look the same on Opening Day as it does now. And the Cardinals..., well, they're the ****ing Cardinals.
  11. In some ways, yes. But guys fall in almost every draft and they took advantage of it. Whereas with Jenkins, it was a rock solid top five draftees, the Twins lucked out in the lottery, and Jenkins was the only guy out of the five left to draft. It was as close to the decision making itself for you as it can get.
  12. The front office deserves a lot of credit for a variety of things. I don't think they're perfect but they seem to be doing a pretty damned good job. With that said, they absolutely lucked into Walker Jenkins in so many freakin' ways.
  13. Oh, for sure. Ortiz fits right into the Brewers' needs, just as Lee would.
  14. This ignores the Brewers’ needs, though. They have outfielders up and down the roster and are trying to compete. It’s no coincidence that the players coming back are both MLB ready and are a pitcher and a shortstop. If I was in the Brewers position, I would have asked for Lee and not moved off that position. He’s an absolutely perfect fit for them right now.
  15. Absolutely. I’m open to trading Lee but the player needs to have more control years.
  16. Not even a little bit true. Two fringy top-100 guys who are MLB ready and a late first round pick. Could the Twins have beat that? Sure. Do you want to trade Brooks Lee for one year of Burnes?
  17. Lee/Varland is a better offer than what the Brewers got and likely the asking price from the Brewers (or slot Raya/Festa in for Varland). I don't think the Twins had the right pieces to get a deal done because the Brewers would likely demand Lee, who is an overpay for one year of Burnes. If the Twins traded for Burnes, I was hoping it would be a Burnes/Wiemer for Lee+.
  18. Our newest partner site, Fish On First, has been covering the series comprehensively. Good stuff. https://fishonfirst.com/search/?&type=cms_records21&tags=caribbean series&search_and_or=or
  19. There are serious questions about Bellinger. I wouldn't want my team to sign him for more than four years and it's almost certainly going to take more than that.
  20. I agree. I was kinda hoping the Jays had just soured on him so much that they were willing to listen to offers.
  21. Jon Morosi tweeted today that embattled Blue Jays starter Alek Manoah will not be traded, as the Jays expect him to be in their 2024 rotation. Manoah, only 26 years old with several years of team control remaining, was phenomenal in his first two years with Toronto before collapsing in 2023, pitching to a 5.87 ERA in 19 starts. It has been rumored the Twins are still interested in playoff-caliber starting pitchers, particularly with the recent news that it's likely they will stay with Bally Sports this season, giving them a last-minute influx of cash to spend on payroll. It appears we can now cross Manoah off the possible list of acquisition targets. View full rumor

  23. I don't see them acquiring a good starting pitcher and keeping Desclafani. It just doesn't make much sense. That means you're optioning a better pitcher in Ober or Ryan just for depth.
  24. I'll save myself the words and just put this instead: Get your **** together, Twins.
  25. Jon Morosi tweeted earlier that Seattle inquired about outfielder Max Kepler during Jorge Polanco trade talks as part of an even larger deal than the five-player swap that happened. Kepler has been involved in trade rumors for years now but Minnesota execs seem to prize the 30-year-old lefty and remain firm at a high asking price. Unlike Polanco, trading Kepler would raise serious questions about the Opening Day outfield for the hometown nine. While Edouard Julien and Brooks Lee are available to play second base, the Twins would have to fall back on the likes of Trevor Larnach, Nick Gordon, or a free agent acquisition to fill Kepler's role. Kepler has one year remaining on his contract. Would you trade the veteran left-hander or keep him in 2024? View full rumor
