  1. No, just pointing out that the Twins sold on a guy who made one start (and isn't very good in the first place) and a second guy who made for a decent closer but always walked a pretty fine line between decent and "OMG MAKE IT STOP". I liked Kintzler and defended him quite a bit but under no circumstances will I pretend he was someone to rely on in the closer role. He did a good job with the Twins but he just as easily could have blown tonight's game. Sure, the front office sold on Kintzler. Maybe that will be a mistake but given the return and the $500k in international cap space given for him, I doubt it will. And it's very possible to get an equal, if not better, replacement in August for less prospect capital.
  2. Given this post, you'd think the Twins traded Greg Maddux and Mariano Rivera, not Jaime Garcia and Brandon Kintzler.
  3. This is where a guy like Dozier needs to earn his "clubhouse leader" title. If he's not in there making a speech right now, something is wrong. You can't expect the kids to recover from a situation like this without encouragement and the manager can't perform that role right now.
  4. One has to wonder if that's the season right there. I don't say things like that often but the loss stings. Hard to see the team rebound unless Ervin comes out firing peas tomorrow.
  5. Well, Belisle is certainly in the fire right now.
  6. Oh, come on! I love Torii. All he does is sit there and make fun of Bremer. Who doesn't love that?
  7. Berrios pitched a great game but the offense hasn't been able to support him.
  8. This team has some serious fight in it right now.
  9. Moving Kepler back to first is a colossal waste of his athleticism.
  10. As I understand it, everything from A+ upward is the high minors. If I'm wrong, I retract the statement. He won't make it higher than A+.
  11. I don't think Darvish will come in much higher than $25m. He's a stutter-step below guys like Scherzer and Price, who are $30m a year pitchers. In any case, I believe there are better targets than Verlander unless the Tigers are eager to move him, which I doubt they are. I don't trust Verlander to be a very good pitcher in 2018-19. He's entering his age 35 season. If you can lowball the Tigers in prospects and take the contract, sure, but the Tigers don't seem to operate that way.
  12. HOLY CRAP. Seriously. That's amazing to see a prep player jump to A ball the year he's drafted. At this rate, he could spend a significant portion of 2018 in the high minors.
  13. Because if the Twins are going to spend that kind of money, I want it spent on someone like Darvish. Instead of getting ages 34-36 at $25m per season, you're getting ages 31-36 seasons at $25m per season. And it costs you zero prospects to do it. If I was the Tigers, my starting asking price for Verlander would be "you pay 100% of his contract and give us Fernando Romero". I'd back down from that to maybe Jorge + Diaz and 100% of Verlander's contract but that's not a price I'd pay if I was the Twins. If the Tigers pay part of the contract, the price goes back up, maybe even Romero+. Verlander is still performing at a high enough level that the Tigers have no reason to trade him right now unless the offer is good. I'm not against trading some nice prospects for pitching but I'd pursue someone with legit upside under 30, not Justin Verlander. And I'd be willing to pay steeply for it to get that real upside. Verlander is simply too big a risk of sudden decline to hamstring payroll and the farm system in trade, IMO.
  14. Yeah, I'm skeptical of Sano sticking at third for 5+ seasons but I'm not willing to write it off, either. Athletes today are not comparable to athletes of the past. Look at your average NFL player. A modern cornerback looks like an old linebacker, a modern defensive lineman looks like an old offensive lineman, and modern offense linemen are no longer classified as human beings.
  15. I agree that using these kind of filters can be misleading but Belisle hasn't posted an ERA close to 2.00 (a good reliever ERA) if you remove the worst 8% of his starts, he has posted an ERA under 1.00 (an outstanding reliever ERA). That's above and beyond what you will see from most "mediocre" relievers. And games are singular entities. That means if you remove the worst 8% of his games where he either lost or helped lose the game for the team - he's giving up roughly one run per nine appearances in the rest of his games. I'll take four bad appearances if the other 43 look like that.
  16. The Twins are tracking ahead of 2015? That's a surprise to me.
  17. I don't see it that way. If you're selling someone like Sano, you don't plan to compete in the next two seasons. And if you're not competing in the next two seasons, then the opposing team has to pay Sano huge money to retain him during your competition window, something they could do anyway if Sano hit free agency. Very rarely do you see significant trades between teams that have overlapping windows of contention because those teams are essentially doing the same thing, which makes them mostly incompatible as trade partners. So you just make the trade that gives your team the best chance of winning given your timeline, division be damned.
  18. Brent Rooker. He's already in A+ and holding his own with a ~.750 OPS. In 12 months, we'll have a much better idea what to do with Joe Mauer and his expiring contract. There's a decent chance Rooker is in Chattanooga by mid-2018 and his performance there could dictate how the Twins move forward. Maybe Rooker isn't ready so the Twins retain Mauer. Maybe they find a stop-gap first baseman. Or maybe Rooker gets the call on Opening Day 2019. Lots to time to punt on this decision.
  19. I honestly hope they have this attitude. As Levine said in the GatG interview, he hopes teams think this way because the Twins will deal with 29 teams, no matter their record or division. You deal with whomever will help you improve your team the most. Refusing to deal within your own division is idiotic. You're limiting your own options to build a winning team. So, yeah, I hope Detroit absolutely refuses to deal within the division. They'll have a harder time rebuilding with that attitude.
  20. I want to see Gonsalves as much as anyone but is he going to be significantly better than Enns? I don't know the answer to that question. And the Twins are now holding down a postseason spot. Colon needs to be on the roster if he's pitching like vintage Colon. Gibson is expendable but I don't see much of a reason to jettison him, either. He'll get three more starts before rosters expand (and he could be replaced by Mejia before that point). Or he could be replaced by Santiago, who needs to be DFAed or added to the roster before they expand. Given the recent run, I understand the desire to keep everybody as-is for now until some guys get healthy.
  21. I've basically given up hope on Gibson. If he can flail around on the mound like he did last night for the rest of the season and the Twins prop up his starts with run support, I'd be thrilled with a .500 record with him on the mound. But what I'd really prefer to see is Mejia get healthy and Enns to have a promising start or two. Get Gibson out of the rotation entirely and see what you have in Enns through the end of the season. Hell, you don't even have to make it that long. Rosters expand in less than 20 days, at which point you can fill the fifth rotation spot with bullpen games.
  22. I highly doubt we're at that point quite yet. At season's end, Verlander will likely have accumulated ~11 fWAR over his past three seasons. Yeah, he's overpaid. Yeah, he's aging. But he's still a good pitcher and Detroit won't let that go for nothing (though I wouldn't pay much more than nothing for the rest of that contract). I suspect Detroit isn't quite ready to give away Verlander, though that point is probably coming soon if Verlander ages in a typical fashion. But if he keeps performing, his value will actually rise as the contract expires.
  23. Pretty sure Ted was the only guy who knew about it.
  24. If you want a laugh, go look at Rosario's career numbers and then filter Torii Hunter's numbers through his age 25 season. Players sometimes improve as they age through their 20s, strangely enough. Who knew?
