  1. Santana needs to get the Wild Card game. No way do I throw Berrios out there in a do-or-die situation (probably on the road to boot), even if he's probably the better pitcher by a slight margin. And if that gives Berrios two divisional round games, so be it.
  2. Alex Rios, I think.
  3. You can all thank me for this win. I got irritated and turned off the game the moment Belisle gave up a homer.
  4. Yeah, that's my take on it as well. So it probably wasn't a salary concern as much as a "get something for him before he goes" situation, even if that return was virtually nothing. Makes you wonder if Upton flat-out told them he was opting out.
  5. I hadn't given up on him - not even close - though where I once expected him to peak as an .850 OPS player, I was concerned he'd peak at .750-.775 OPS. Still a valuable player with that defense but no longer a franchise cornerstone.
  6. It's something I've noticed, though I'm reluctant to give Colon credit for the improvement. Then again, I'm not ruling it out entirely, either.
  7. This is my feeling as well. The Tigers have never shown a desire to dump salary for salary's sake. As a result, their asking price is likely higher than Verlander's worth as a player. If the Tigers don't care about salary, they can keep their asking price high on Justin, probably with the caveat the Tigers eat some salary to get a better return. Verlander is super-popular in Detroit and if he keeps pitching as he is now, his value actually increases as his guaranteed money lowers.
  8. Both Santana and Berrios qualify under those circumstances. Will either of them beat Kershaw? No, probably not, but that's an unreasonable standard to hold a human being. But both of them can give you a 3 ER, 6 IP game against the best teams.
  9. But honestly, we should feel that way about 60% of the rotation.
  10. While I agree that it appears he's been pitching differently - I haven't thrown up my hands in frustration watching 1-1 counts turn to 3-1 counts in two pitches - his most recent and pronounced success has come against two of the worst offenses in the league. I'm going to need more data to show me whether Gibson is actually better or the offenses he's facing are worse.
  11. I agree that three question marks is a terrible idea, which is why I want the front office to acquire an established, above average starter to complement Berrios and Santana.
  12. I'm not willing to say the Twins should bring back Gibson yet but I'm trying to keep an open mind.
  13. I'm still not sure they need to add two starters. Adding one legitimately good starter might be enough. May, Mejia, Gonsalves, and Romero might be enough to round out a rotation. And any savings found in the rotation can be applied to the bullpen, where I still want to see them pick up a good RH guy on a short-term contract.
  14. He was historically bad and changed his swing multiple times. I'm one of the more patient posters on this board when it comes to prospects and even I was really concerned about Buxton.
  15. Oh, definitely. I'm speaking mostly in the context of Gonsalves, who doesn't profile as well as Gordon. Gordon could bomb out, just like any prospect. But indications are that he should be a decent MLB starter.
  16. That's easily his biggest flaw right now but also not atypical for young LHBs. How he advances through AA and AAA will be telling (and his left/right splits are probably the biggest reason I want to see the front office take their time with the kid).
  17. Again, this is how Gordon gets undervalued. Look at his offensive line and say "meh". Look at his defensive scouting reports and say "meh". Look at this stolen bases... "meh". But how many of those "not so good but an okay starter" guys are average to slightly above average at everything? And that's Gordon's profile. He'll hit for acceptable average. He'll hit for acceptable power from short. He'll get on base at an acceptable clip. He'll play acceptable defense. He'll steal an acceptable number of bases. That's the kind of player that ends up sneaky good. Will he be elite? No, probably not... but a shortstop that can OPS at .775, swipe 20-25 bags, and play average or a touch better than average defense is a damned fine player, one that often can't be had on the free agent market because by the time your average shortstop hits FA, at least one of those skills is in decline (usually defense and probably baserunning). Basically, think of non-concussion Denard Span at short. Probably a little more power and a little less discipline. That's a player you want.
  18. Yeah, exactly. Just because Gordon won't be Correa doesn't mean he won't be really valuable. Never mind the fallback value of any player at shortstop. They can fall downward anywhere on the diamond and likely still be competent, if not good at the position.
  19. He had an OPS over .800 just a few weeks ago. And last season, he was in the FSL, which destroys hitters. He's 21 years old and appears to be wearing down again this season. That's not uncommon, particularly for a guy as lean as he is right now. But everything is trending in the right direction with his bat. He's more patient and he's showing more power this season. Give that guy a year or two more and maybe 5-10 lbs. He may end up an average bat or he may end up a .775-.800 bat, which is worth a ton at shortstop.
  20. Gordon is absolutely the higher reward guy of the two. You're underrating just how valuable a good defending, good hitting shortstop is in the majors. That's a 4+ WAR player. And that's if Gordon just performs to his reasonable capability. Gonsalves' reasonable capability is #3 starter if you squint a little. Probably more realistically, he's a #3/4. That's a, what, 3-ish WAR player? Gordon's ceiling is perennial All-Star, a 5+ WAR player. Gonsalves' ceiling... isn't that high. Maybe a very good #3 with the occasional #2 season. Gordon doesn't wow with any single skill but he's average or better in pretty much every regard. That's a very good up-the-middle player. I think people tend to overlook just how hard it is to find a shortstop who's pretty good at everything. The Twins haven't had that player since... Roy Smalley? Gagne couldn't hit, Guzman wasn't very good at anything other than running. We're talking four decades of not being able to field a guy with the rounded skillset of Gordon. And I'm not even that high on Gordon. I think he'll be an acceptable hitter, probably a good fielder. But add that up and it's super-valuable. There's a reason Gordon will be a consensus top 50 prospect this offseason.
  21. That's fair. Again, my concern isn't about Justin Verlander today, it's Justin Verlander in 2018 and 19. If you're confident he'll be the same pitcher in two years, you go get that guy. Well, within reason. If the Tigers ask for Gordon, you politely tell them the fastest and most direct route straight to hell. But for Gonsalves, you start negotiating.
  22. Yeah, he'll probably be in the $25m range, which doesn't really matter much compared to $20m. It's a utility infielder difference. And while Darvish hasn't been much better than Verlander recently, I have more confidence he'll be at that level for two more seasons where I'm not sure Verlander can do it. That's my biggest problem with a Verlander acquisition. He's been pretty good recently but he's at the age where he could turn pedestrian (or worse) in a hurry. And that two window season should be the Twins' primary focus, IMO. Maybe they're good for 4+ seasons but I think they'll peak in 2019-2020.
  23. The old rules shouldn't apply. If a big name FA is how you get it done, then do that. The Twins have the money and the old front office is gone. I suspect Falvey won't be a big FA guy but I don't know that for sure and I kinda hope I'm wrong.
  24. Darvish will come in over $20m per season but I'm not sure how much over. And five years was just throwing out a number, I have no issues with the Twins going longer term than that if required. And Darvish was traded so the QO does not apply. In any case, I'm far less worried about losing a draft pick than I am losing a prospect who may contribute in the near future. But I'm also not against trading prospects for a pitcher. Basically, go find a good pitcher with control. I don't really care how it's done but I'd prefer free agency if given the choice.
  25. Yeah, now imagine that guy playing a defensive position (not a defensive position plus DH) at a 25+ runs saved per season clip. It's possible but I don't think people realize what kind of season that would be. It's a 12+ WAR season, something even Trout hasn't done in his career (and Trout has never had a full 1.000+ OPS nor has he had a 25+ runs saved season).
