  1. To those saying this move was long overdue... How quickly did you expect the front office to willingly jettison $20m+? The guy didn't pitch his first game until April 22nd. He pitched all of two games out of the rotation before the front office put him in the bullpen. In the three weeks since that move, Hughes pitched in only five games. It was certainly time to move on but the front office gave Hughes a brief shot at the rotation, saw he no longer had the stuff to start, then gave him a brief look at relieving, ultimately coming to the same conclusion. Could they have moved a week earlier? Sure. But one week isn't exactly "long overdue".
  2. And thank god for that. Kids go to school 7-8 hours a day, five days a week, nine months a year. That hasn’t changed in a century. Except we live in the 21st century now. Do you want your kids learning cursive writing or computer UIs, new media, software, etc? You can choose one or the other.
  3. Correction: pure catchers never play 150 games a season. Even Posey, a model of health and consistency, has played 150 games (exactly 150, actually) in all of one season and he spends 20-40 games at first base every year. Mike Piazza did it twice. Pudge Rodriguez did it twice. Even the mighty Johnny Bench only did it four times in a wildly different era with different expectations and talent levels.
  4. Yeah, but the Jays need to play tough ALE teams and the Twins have played only seven games against the ALC. I don’t think people have really noticed how many tough out of division teams the Twins have played and how few in-division cupcake teams they’ve faced thus far. We’re already 25% of the way through the season. At some point, this team is going to feast on a month where they line up against Chicago, Kansas City, and Detroit for a string of home/away series.
  5. None whatsoever. I don't know if I'm ready to jump in on Realmuto - it all depends on the price - but there should be something available better than what the Twins have right now in Wilson.
  6. Also that. A mix of the two, actually... When Mauer's launch angle is in the negative (aka. ground ball), he's a pull hitter.
  7. Well, yes, but he's very likely to spend several years in MLB barring injury. He's the one guy I wouldn't move right now. I think he only continues to gain value.
  8. Realmuto has 2+ seasons left before free agency, not 3+ seasons. And the Twins will almost surely get 6+ seasons out of Lewis so you're passing on four seasons of Lewis.
  9. It was a questionable decision but not an indefensible one. We all figured Pelfrey was in way over his head but the bullpen was in pretty miserable shape at the time. The Twins needed a higher upside arm to pitch late innings and May was their best option. Of course, that meant weakening the rotation at the same time. It wasn't an optimal solution but there was no optimal solution available at the time.
  10. For a guy who never trains and is so out of shape, it's pretty weird how Mauer has an average exit velocity ~2mph faster than the MLB average (and IIRC, the gap was even larger last season). The reason he doesn't hit for power is his launch angle - a direct result of his swing - not any lack of strength or conditioning. His launch angle is 4.8 degrees while the MLB average is around 12.5 degrees.
  11. That's good in theory but rarely works in practice. You might go 5-6 days of getting 5+ innings out of your starters. You won't give a single reliever three innings in any of those appearances and May rusts on the bench. The reason you don't give one reliever three innings in that situation is because the game is usually close at that point and you want to use matchups to notch another win. If your starter goes 5+ and the game isn't close, you're probably kicking the other team's ass so it doesn't matter. On the other hand, you might get a couple of three inning starts in a 2-3 day span. You can't use the same guy for three innings that close together, either. And if your starter goes three innings, you're probably getting your ass kicked so, once again, it doesn't matter. The reality is that long men don't get regular work. There's a reason why long men are the back of the bullpen and very rarely a good pitcher. You use them when you need innings en masse and don't want to waste all those days off on a pitcher who can actually get hitters out on a regular basis.
  12. I think we’re just disagreeing that a couple of other good young teams existing makes none of them young. In my mind, I consider the Twins, Yankees, and Red Sox young teams. And it’s likely the Twins continue to be young for awhile because they are going to add more prospects this season.
  13. I think it extends beyond those guys’ arb years because the Twins can and should be able to keep 2-3 of them and fill in the rest of the roster with the guys I mentioned earlier. It won’t keep the window open forever because that’s impossible for a mid-market team. But it can extend a 2-3 year window to 4-5 years and that should be the goal.
  14. Why wouldn't anyone think of the Red Sox as young? I sure do. Like you said, they have five regulars 26 or younger. It causes me a lot of pain to see how young the BoSox and Yankees have become over the past couple of years. When Polanco and Sano return, the Twins will have the same number of guys 26 or younger in the lineup.
  15. Mauer has more fWAR than Pedrioa and is basically the same age. Pedrioa was mediocre in 2017 and hasn't played this year. Yet he's on the list and Mauer isn't. Lazzzzzzyyyyyyyyyyyy.
  16. While I'm not against trading Gordon, you don't do it unless you're confident it will pay huge rewards. Because if you trade Gonsalves and Gordon for a guy with two years remaining before free agency, you have two years, maybe three, to compete. Then the window slams shut in a hurry. Gordon and Gonsalves can keep the window open a lot longer than two years because they're not the end of the road on the farm. The Twins also have guys like Thorpe, Enlow, Lewis, Rooker, et al following Gordon and Gonsalves. Again, it's not wrong to trade Gordon and Gonsalves under the right circumstances, you just better be damned sure it's a good deal and/or you have enough firepower behind them to keep the window open. I'm not worried about how Gordon/Gonsalves align with Buxton and Sano as much as I'm interested in seeing the Twins compete at a high level for the longest possible time. Ultimately, that will mean trading prospects and narrowing your window a bit but I don't care about young player overlap because that's generally a good thing.
  17. Gotta upgrade asap. Priority #1 as of a few hours ago. The rotation is solid with reinforcements available. The bullpen less so but you can hope for the best with Jay and a few others filling in roles. But Garver shouldn’t be the full-time starter and Wilson is an afterthought, a guy you don’t mind giving 10-15 starts due to injury but not 30-40.
  18. Look at the scores of those games. If the offense is clicking, they add a couple more wins and are REALLY rolling as a team. The pitching has been *very* good more often than not. Here are the runs scored in those four losses: 5 4 1 0 The offense has stumbled quite often this season. You expect to see that from pretty much any offense over 162 but if the Twins were consistently posting 3+ runs (not exactly a lofty bar to reach), they'd be one of the best teams in the league in the month of May.
  19. Would he actually have an opportunity though? This is likely to be the first season Castro plays fewer than 100 games since he entered the league. If Mauer, Morrison, et al get injured, the front office likely turns to someone with more defensive acumen because the plodding hitters are interchangeable. Go with your best 25. Garver is one of those guys and he earned his place in Minnesota. Deal with injuries if and when they happen.
  20. Huh. Berrios is back out after a long inning. Didn't expect that.
  21. Honest question: with Buxton on third, do you play with the infield in? I don't think I do.
  22. Rosario would have slid into the dugout there.
  23. He's super young though and he was leaving a ton of balls down the middle of the plate. Those hits weren't lucky or an accident.
