  1. Yeah, I don't know if I'd call them "baseball instincts". He's an exciting player, one that seems to over/underplay, sometimes at really odd times. Those "overplays" lead to really good results a lot of the time. Other times, maybe not so much. I consider a guy like Dozier to have really good baseball instincts. He's prone to some bad plays but I don't think we can really argue whether he's getting the most out of his ability on the basepaths. He's not particularly fast but has been an above-average baserunner most of his career, with one or two of those years being very valuable. Mauer has loads of baseball smarts and instinct, obviously. Maybe throw Escobar in there as well? He's another guy that seems to be getting the absolute max out of his talent level. A few years from now, I think we'll include Jose Berrios on that list as well.
  2. Both. The WC game is almost complete luck, as one guy can lose or win the game. A seven game series is less dependent on luck, but it's still a significant factor. Especially if the series goes seven games... that final game, like almost any baseball game, is pretty close to a coin flip.
  3. It's probably time to move on from Hughes but if he's stashed at the back of the bullpen as a long man, I'm not too worried about whether he's on the roster or not. A long man has such a small impact on wins/losses that I'm not sure it really matters... and I'm not ready (not yet, anyway) to waste a prospect in the role, giving him little work and accruing service time in the process. When May comes back, it'll probably force a decision. I don't see Trevor going back into the rotation this season, there simply isn't much room for him. I assume Lynn will normalize a bit. Odorizzi, Gibson, Berrios are close to locks. Romero looked good in his first start but Santana is going to bump somebody out of the rotation and once that happens, I don't see where May fits.
  4. It's definitely more of a concern with guys like Rosario but he showed improvement in discipline last season. Hopefully that will carry over when he cools off a bit.
  5. I don't worry about guys taking walks when the baseball looks like a beachball to them at the plate. Even Mauer's walks take a nosedive when he goes on one of his patented .400 batting average months. The real test will be if he takes walks after he cools off a bit. That's when he'll need to step back, show more patience, and make the pitcher work to get him out.
  6. It seems to me that Lynn might be a good argument why you don't hold out through part of Spring Training to sign a contract, especially if you're around 30 and have another legit shot at a free agent contract. Come the first week of February, you take the best deal that's on the table and get your butt on the field. If Lynn manages to pitch to his ability for the rest of the season, this one truly awful month is going to make his overall line look pretty pedestrian. And that means millions of dollars left on the table next year when he tries to convince a team he's worth a 3-4 year contract.
  7. A couple of question marks going against a good team this series: Romero and Odorizzi. Take the split and get your asses back home, Twins.
  8. Sure, you can tilt odds in your favor but the Twins lost to some inferior teams in the 2000s. They already had the odds tilted and still didn’t pull off a win.* *not making excuses for the complete lack of deadline action some of those years
  9. They played Houston straight up. Then they completely collapsed. I have no idea what this team will look like in two months but I’ll be disappointed if their only shot at the postseason is by trouncing their terrible divisional rivals.
  10. With his old approach, I thought he could be average or slightly above at the plate and well above average in the field. Wrong on all counts.
  11. Rolling a seven once does not prevent you from rolling it a second time. Or a third. Or a fourth. I don’t think the MLB postseason is a total crapshoot but it’s heavily dependent on luck, far more than other sports.
  12. I’ve always underestimated Rosario a bit and he continues to prove me wrong. I’ll take being this kind of wrong all day long.
  13. It’s a pretty ugly situation on the farm.
  14. Yeah, that pretty good offense and good defense Castro gave the team last year was pretty terrible.
  15. Yep. You’re forfeiting potential gains in the here and now by holding on to a stock that may rebound in a year. Sometimes, you’re really concerned about that gain one year from now. Other times, you care more about the here and now. The Twins are the latter.
  16. Rosario is a prime example why we shouldn’t gnash our teeth over a hitter struggling through 15 games. Can we all stop doing that, please?
  17. A fourth outfielder doesn’t NEED to become a third outfielder at the first sign of injury. That’s a conscious decision, not something that happens automatically. And in the case of Grossman, it’s a bad decision. He can be a good support player but has no business going out into the field more than twice a week (and preferably once).
  18. Grossman is a guy I don’t mind having on the bench with the occasional spot start. He’s badly exposed as a starter and should not be used as such. Go get a real outfielder.
  19. Woof. That popup was a pitch he usually hits 400 ft.
  20. Still waiting to see an article on TD titled “The Eds Are Alright”.
  21. Like I say every spring, "too many pitchers" is a problem that usually sorts itself out before it actually becomes a problem. One injury and everything reorganizes itself.
  22. After that outing and coupled with the Twins' recent floundering, I believe there's something approaching a zero chance Romero gets fewer than 3-4 more starts before a decision is made either way.
  23. It's not that anything stands out as out of line with MiLB players, it's that the actual MLB results of rookies are all over the place and you may as well try to throw a dart at a board blindfolded as to accurately predict a rookie season. I'm not arguing that Steamer is wrong and I'm right, I'm saying that more often than not, everybody is wrong. See Sano, Berrios, and Buxton for examples. I'm almost certain Steamer didn't predict Sano's 149 wRC+ or Buxton/Berrios' epic meltdowns as rookies.
  24. That’s fair. I’m not saying they’re worthless but when I’ve tracked them, I haven’t felt comfortable relying on them at all.
