  1. He is not a good situational player. He screws up pretty often.
  2. Here's the Santiago we all remember. It's really interesting how a competent but marginal pitcher can fall to pieces with even the slightest loss of velocity or control. Some of these guys really walk a tightrope to stay in the majors.
  3. If they buy out arb seasons with an extension, I don't think it matters. Don't know that for sure, though... but it makes sense because players who sign extensions usually get more money than they would through arbitration, though it's a modest amount more ($1-2m per season).
  4. As I mentioned a week or two ago, I think the loss of Castro actually hurts Garver. Playing ~50 games and chatting up one of the better framers and receivers in the league 100 other days of the season could be a boon for Garver's game going forward. Because as it stands now, I wince when I see Garver in the starting lineup because I know I'm going to suffer through at least 4-5 really ugly catches in the game.
  5. Oh no, I don't think they could get away with a flat rate. But if you can offer $7m instead of $2m and then $11m instead of $6m, you can get the final couple of years for maybe $15m per instead of $20m per. Do that three times and it's an extra player you can extend. Normally, that would be hard for a team to pull off but the Twins have about $20-25m committed for next season and zero dollars committed for the following season.
  6. Yep, it makes sense from both sides of the deal, which is why it's frustrating that no one signed this kind of deal for so long. The team gets the potential for an additional 1-2 years of competition by signing several of these deals (and the only downside is the loss of 3-ish percent to inflation each season). A couple of years of contention can be worth tens of millions of dollars to the team, which makes a few percentage points on 2-3 players irrelevant. On the other hand, the players get money valued higher (pre-inflation), get "rich quicker" through bigger early payments, and can grow that money over 3-4 seasons, which could be an enormous amount of money to the player if done correctly.
  7. My point is that I'd like to see them more expensive next year. If you offer those guys $6-8m for the first season instead of $2-3m, you can try to negotiate lower rates at the end of the extension, which allows you to keep one more player. It makes all the sense in the world to operate this way because the Twins are flush with cash now but won't be in 2022. And Darvish has shown that players can be open to this kind of deal.
  8. If a lower court judge makes a bad decision, it will be appealed immediately and a higher court judge (also likely a smarter judge) will rip it to shreds. This isn't a bad decision for equality. Colorado f-ed up here and you should be blaming them for doing such a shoddy job investigating and ruling on this case, not the Supreme Court for calling them out for bad behavior.
  9. Well, the majority opinion (written by Kennedy, a moderate) had to fill the requirements of six justices while the minority opinion had to fill the requirements of only two. In the end, it doesn't matter. The ruling was clear and narrow. You're arguing that people who want to misunderstand the intent of the ruling would somehow be swayed by different wording in the majority decision, which assumes that people who want to misinterpret something are going to dig deeper and read the ruling at all. Lower courts judges will understand this ruling just fine and that's all that matters.
  10. It's not the court's responsibility to rule with the goal of preventing misinterpretations by stupid people, though. They should follow the law and do what the law requires them to do (and that's mostly what they do, IMO).
  11. I'd pump the brakes a bit on assuming Wilson is on his way out the door immediately. The Twins' catching situation is dire. One more injury and they're royally screwed. I suspect they prefer Rupp over Wilson at the MLB level but probably want to figure out a way to keep both.... hell, they need to keep both. A team can't function with two catchers available. They need a third.
  12. Agreed. And while my wife hasn't had time to read the entire decision, her initial take on it is that the decision was extremely narrow and doesn't impact much of anything outside this singular case (apparently Thomas, in his typical role of trying to be the biggest ass on the court, wanted a broader decision). There's a reason why the vote was 7-2. Half the liberal judges didn't suddenly lose their moral compass. There appears to be a lot more (or, maybe more accurately, less) to this decision than "bigotry is okay".
  13. I'd love to see a team work a bunch of extensions that are front-heavy in comparison to what we see most of the time. I'd love it even more if my favorite team was the first club to do it. There's no reason to pay Buxton $2m in 2019 and $30m in 2023 or whatever. Start him off in the $6-10m range and keep the later years flat around $15m or something around that number. It gives tons more flexibility in later years to maintain competitiveness for a longer period of time.
  14. My guess is that they plan to go hard at extending some combination of Berrios, Buxton, Sano, Rosario, Kepler, et al.
  15. But then why give up the draft pick? They forked over ~$4m last season to get Littell instead of a lesser prospect. Their 2019 payroll commitment is somewhere around $20m (Pineda, Reed, and...?). They literally have no reason to give up a draft pick to move salary unless they're planning something. They could easily come in under 2018 payroll and still be quite active in the offseason while eating Hughes' entire salary.
  16. Yeah... JR Murphy 2018: 8 HR in 87 PA JR Murphy rest of MLB career: 5 HR in 381 PA
  17. Maybe. I'm not super high on Gonsalves, either. But you're right, they're not terribly different pitchers.
  18. Paraphrasing here but the postgame interview was hilarious. Marnie: You already hit two home runs in the game. Did you go into the ninth thinking home run? Eddie: Hell yeah, why not?
  19. I have to admit that I've underestimated the guy. I thought he'd be a pretty good regular but never envisioned anything like this happening.
  20. I’ve been frustrated by all those one run losses over the past few weeks but I never lost faith in the offense. There’s too much talent there to be that bad for a long stretch of play. I mostly worried whether the starting pitching would hold up but I’m pretty confident in that as well. Cleveland is not a great team. This division can be won and Detroit sure as hell isn’t going to do it.
  21. Fourteen months ago, some were calling for Eddie to be cut. *cackles maniacally*
  22. I doubt recent performance is much of a factor. This move makes sense, as the candidates are: 1. May: no way do you call this guy up and end his rehab for one start when you don't need to make a decision for a couple more weeks, especially given his recent performance. 2. Slegers: eh, whatever. 3. Gonsalves: maybe you want to call him up but do you really want to do it for one start when he doesn't really align well in the rotation to do so? Also, he had an absolutely terrible outing last time around (0.2 IP). 4. Littell: a good enough prospect but likely nothing to write home about, a guy you don't really care whether you bounce him around a bit in spot starts. Slegers and Littell make the most sense here and the Twins have already seen Slegers.
  23. Well, yes and no. Rosario is only good when he lays off the unhittable pitches. He's doing that now. Last year (or the year before, can't remember), I argued that Rosario could be very productive if he laid off only the worst 4% pitches thrown to him. He has done that (and admittedly, is better than I could have hoped as a result).
  24. I remember one of the first games I took my wife to... She asked why everyone was standing still during an IFFB. I told her "Well, the infield fly rule is one of the most complicated rules in baseball. What happens is that when a pop fly stays in the infield with runners on base, the umpire will make a call while the ball is in the air and... oh, **** it. You don't care anyway. It's just a thing that happens in baseball." Her reply? "Thank you. You're right, I don't care."
