I've heard that this movie is really good, even more so by the last minute replacement. Ridley Scott and Martin Scorsese are basically my gods. Not only because they make good films but that they have the ability to keep their finger on what makes good entertainment well into their 70s. Ridley Scott just turned 80 years old, for ****'s sake. And Martin Scorsese made his first "kid's film" in his late 60s. It's amazing.

Yes, because they were worse people (by modern standards) without photographic or video evidence of their horribleness. The problem with sports is that you can't separate the art the from the artist. Say Steven Spielberg was a horrible serial rapist (knock on wood PLEASE STEVEN DON'T BE THAT PERSON), that doesn't mean you love the characters of ET or Indiana Jones any less. There's a disconnect with art and the artist that does not exist in sports. Puckett hits that home run in game six of the series and there's no filter of Luke Skywalker to separate the artist from his "art". And kids are going to worship at the alter of what they enjoy. When they watch a Pixar film, they won't give a rat's ass whether the creator of Wall-E is a double murderer. They only know Wall-E and he's great! But an athlete? There's no separation.

Agreed that it’s a shame it still happens but some people in this thread are giving a lot of consideration to Sano and virtually none to Bissen. They should probably ask themselves why that’s the case. I believe Betsy but have somehow managed not to say an ill word about Sano in the process. I’ll let the investigators figure that part out. The only thing I can do right now is support a woman who had the gumption to talk about a very bad situation.

Let me put this a different way with way bigger numbers. They say something like two out of three assaults go unreported. Numbers vary but whatever, the numbers are so large they don’t really matter for this example. So for every 100,000 assaults, there are 200,000 unreported assaults. That means for every 300,000 assaults, 6,000 are false accusations. A large reason why women are reluctant to come out and talk about their experiences is because of what we’re seeing in this thread (which pales in comparison to the crap I’ve seen in other places over the past two days). Dissecting every word of their statements, challenging their personal history, implying they misunderstood the situation and/or intent, literally focusing on everything BUT the potential crime under consideration. So I ask you this: Why are you worried so much about your 6,000 fathers, brothers, and sons but giving so little thought or consideration to your 294,000 mothers, daughters, and sisters?

1. 6% is not a lot. It's just a bit more than one out of twenty. No one thinks one out of twenty is a lot of anything. Add in all the unreported assaults we're up to, what, about 1 out of 80 assaults are falsely accused? That's an insanely low number. 2. See, the problem here is that these things should be considered sexual assault. Just because young men have gotten away with stupid things in the past (myself included) doesn't justify continued bad behavior.

You misunderstood the context of the conversation. I have no idea what the police would have done had Betsy gone to them with the accusation. But we were talking about Nick Nelson not going to the police, even though he wasn't there and it was well after the fact (by over a year, if I'm understanding the timeline correctly). The police would do nothing if Nick spoke up, which was the point I made.

Okay, so we're going to try this again, everyone. Be on your best behavior, as everyone (ownership and moderators) will be watching this thread closely.

Betsy herself has said the Twins had no knowledge of the situation.

And what exactly was Nick supposed to do about it? You realize that the police would do nothing about it, right? It didn't happen to Nick. He wasn't there. Nevermind that it's not Nick's place to go around reporting things he was told in confidence.

I'm not saying that wouldn't be a crappy move - it would be - but COME ON, MAN. Which is the greater crime here? 1. Sexual assault 2. Trading a player who may have committed sexual assault And, yes, forcing yourself on a woman and kissing her against her will is sexual assault. It's not "hang the bastard by his testicles sexual assault" but it falls on the spectrum of "sexual assault".

wut seriously wut So you'd have more of a problem with the front office dishing off a (in this theoretical situation, problematic) player than a player who committed sexual assault?

You should probably know that a large portion of this board has met Betsy, probably more times than they can count. There's no reason to doubt her statement. And we wonder why women are so reluctant to even talk about this stuff.

Article: Tampa Open To Trades
Brock Beauchamp replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah, if you're going to make a trade, go big. I'd prefer free agency but if a trade is to be made, I'd want it to be a blockbuster. -
Or maybe they're smart enough to not sign anyone for more than one year. I'm not really sure why you think longer contracts to relievers are a good idea. Now, I get the underwhelming response to Rodney's talent level (but still, he's a significant step up from most/all the relievers signed by Ryan) but the length of contract isn't a negative, it's a positive. It's also possible they just signed one guy and we have no idea what they plan to do in January. Almost any time you can sign a pitcher to a shorter deal, you do it. Would you rather have Darvish on a one year deal or a four year deal? I'd take the one year deal. Hell, I'd probably take Darvish for one year over three years.
-
Wait, so you want the Twins to sign a reliever to a multiple year contract? Why? Relievers are terribly volatile. If you can get a guy for one year, you do that nearly 100% of the time unless he's Mariano Rivera in his prime. I'm not thrilled with the Rodney signing but he's a decent reliever on a one year deal. Now go get another one of those, please.

Combined, the two players have ~400 professional plate appearances. Both were/are pretty highly regarded in some respects (Pearson was a mid 2nd round pick on some boards, Banuelos' defense is a plus). There's no need to put a positive or negative spin on either of them. They're both so inexperienced that no conclusion can be drawn from a stat sheet.

Yeah, but that kid actually had a vision problem. He floundered in the low minors and bombed out of baseball. The rumors being bandied about in this thread are suggesting Marte's vision problem isn't that big of a deal. And if it's not the big of a deal, it would require very little money to go get an independent physical and send it to 29 MLB teams, attached with a note "I'll sign for half what the Twins offered me". There are literally hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars at stake here. If the Twins are dealing dirty, it'd be very easy to prove otherwise and make a boatload of money (while the acquiring team still saves millions). This seems like a pretty clear cut example of Occam's Razor. The Twins said he has a vision problem that will hamper his baseball career, he probably has a vision problem that will hamper his baseball career.

The thing is that there are teams with more than high six figures in international money. If the Twins screwed him over, he would have plenty of other suitors. He was a $3m signing. If nothing is wrong with him, he could easily find another team to give him 1/3rd that money or more. Remember that the Twins just dealt $2m to other teams, at least one of which won't get Ohtani and will be sitting on a pile of cash. If Marte is just fine and everything is no big deal, that org would be insane not to offer him everything they have and get him in the organization.

Given that Marte claims there's no hard feelings over the voiding of the contract, this seems unlikely. If the Twins were pulling a fast one and trying to get away with something, it seems to me Marte would have a lot of ill will toward the organization, not brush off the voided contract and say he's open to signing at a reduced amount.

My understanding is that pretty much all of these contracts have a "pending a physical" stipulation. They get the contract done because that's the hard part. They worry about the physical later because it's a formality the overwhelming majority of the time.

They literally traded a $1m 2017 draftee for $1m in fake money. Not sure what you think they could have received that would be more significant than that.
