"The purpose of computation is insight, not numbers.”  Richard Hamming, 1962.

I was introduced to this quote from an early giant of computing at some point in my young career (no, I don't go back quite as far as Hamming).  That principle guides a good portion of what I try to do here.  Quoting a number, or a bunch of them, isn't intended to close a discussion, but to try to suggest how to look for something beneath the surface.  Take that for what it's worth, because disagreement about that certainly would be where to "agree to disagree."

Finally, please take the following in the playful spirit it's intended:

That's a great quote. It fits alongside the Mark Twain quote about three kinds of lies -- lies, damn lies and statistics -- and my college prof who taught us to question every single statistic we see to consider whether there might be something in the context that is leading to bias. Context, context, context.

(Aside: While questioning data and assumptions is good and appropriate in many contexts, I've learned over 40 years of marriage that it's not always a good approach in conversations with one's spouse. 🤣)

Mrs Ash has a PhD in an area of mathematics, so you might be surprised at the dinner table conversations at our house.  Assumptions are rarely allowed to ride unquestioned.

There were reports at the trade deadline that he already told the team he would turn it down.

Then you get the pick and find another dude to tag team with Caratini as a one year bridge to the kids.  Win win.
