(4:57 pm ET) The Mets announced Tuesday they placed starting pitcher Shaun Marcum on waivers for the purpose of his unconditional release. Marcum is out for the season after undergoing surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. Marcum is being released because of a different pay scale for being with the team as opposed to being on the disabled list, according to ESPN.

I have no idea the long term outlook after having surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome but if he is expected to make a full recovery I would be very interested in acquiring him for the 2014 season. When healthy he is a #2 starter in this league. I would also guess he is going to get a "show me" type contract that won't be too expensive. Win-Win if you ask me. Of course this all depends on what his prognosis is going forward.

Chris Carpenter had a similar procedure last July and is not back, likely done. Bonderman took 2 years to come back. Noah Lowry ended up done.
