Trading Beloved Players

Trade him for an average prospect? Very few if any average prospects will have 50 rbi's in their lifetime in the majors. Very few will even make the majors.

It's not about getting a good return. It's about opening up spots for guys that likely can replicate Morneau's production for much longer than 1/2 a season.

NOBODY is going to give us anything of value for Morneau. NOBODY! Don't trade him. Try and sign him for a reasonable contract (unless Colobello turns into a monster).

Last year Carlos Lee was traded for a top 100 prospect (3B Matt Dominguez) plus a AA starting pitcher (Rob Rasmussen). Lee was hitting .287/.336/.411 for an OPS+ of 102 at the time of the trade. Morneau is hitting .272/.330/.407 for an OPS+ of 101 currently. I think much of Morneau's value is dependent on how much, if any, of his salary the Twins are willing to pay. To say that he is worth nothing is a stretch.

A Christian Guzman or Alexi Casilla type are certainly possible returns. To me six seasons of a Guzman like player is worth much more than half a season of Morneau. It's even worth more than two and half seasons since the Twins won't be competitive during those years.

What's a reasonable contract for one of the league's worst hitting first basemen?

I am asking seriously, even though I think it's a bad idea to sign him at all, especially as we might be adding Plouffe's name to the list of players that might be fighting for time there.

Yet he is our best run producer. Guess there is work to be done!

RBI production is often a function of lineup position. Batting, for example, behind one of the league's best hitters. Coincidentally, it's also the reason our best hitter has so few RBIs, because he's consistently hitting behind a leadoff position that has been pretty terrible.

By extension, Morneau could have a lot more RBIs too. Right? ;)
