Yes, they went on a 11 game win streak to jump to top team in the league, and we even went on a 12 game win streak early in the year.  However, they are at 75 wins, 5 above the next best teams.  When I think of the Brewers there are not too many names that come to mind.  When you look they do not have a single player in top 10 in bWAR.  Even when broken down by position players or pitchers they still do not. They are not a crazy good defensive team.

I looked and they have one starting pitcher that is pitching well, but his FIP is still a 3.73.  Their bullpen is doing well overall so that must be a big reason.  Isaac Collins, by OPS+ has been their best hitter this year, you know that 27 year old rookie former 9th round pick that no one heard of outside the Brewers organization.  Yelich is next on the list and leading the team in HR.  Overall the players are just slightly above average hitters most around 110 to 120 OPS+.  Andrew Vaughn since coming to Brewers has gone off in 27 games, but before he got there he was terrible for the Sox.

So it begs the question how are they doing it? What really seems to jump out to me is that many of their players are having above average seasons for them.  They have a balanced line up and no huge holes.  They are getting production they were not expecting.

Easy. The Brewers play to win. They have a front office and manager that are committed to winning and that focus is direct with every player on the team. Christian Yelich is an established player who has suffered numerous injuries and yet he is bunting, stealing bases, putting his bat on the ball to advance a runner, and sprinting to first base on a one hop grounder back to the pitcher. A team with that ethos has a chance in every game.

Yes, it is wonderful that the Brewers are winning so often but their brand of baseball is attractive to anyone who ever liked baseball. Compare that to the turn off the radio and tV Twins.

Finally, I would argue that the Brewers expected to win a ton of games. They have been consistently competitive and because they develop players at the lower levels they are young hungry players with skills ready to perform.

110-120 OPS+ is a pretty significant difference.  Especially when most of your lineup is hitting that way.

They play a scrappy brand of baseball where they win on the margins.

That is kind of my point, that they have no big bashers top guys that earn the mega deals, but they have a lineup of slightly above average guys, and getting the most out of guys like Vaughn who was doing terrible until they took him.

They are not afraid of youth and they trust in their system of development.

It isn't just the Brewers, Cleveland, Detroit are also examples of development as the primary feeding the animal.

The Red Sox... just traded Devers and got better afterwards and they have a 2025 team full of youth. The Giants grabbed Devers and ended up selling at the deadline. After selling they got themselves back into contention with players like Drew Gilbert leading the way.

I ask everyone to look at all 30 teams and count how many times you ask yourself this question.

Who is this guy and where did he come from?

Once you start looking into those answers... the only conclusion that you can draw is this.

Pre-Arb players produce the same range of Bad to Terrible players as a lot of the vets. We just don't know who they are.
