The trade in which Mahle was acquired is completely immaterial. The trade did not cause this injury nor was there a way to anticipate this injury. Nor does the trade have any bearing on what happens from this point forward. So I hope the trade can be left out of further discussion on this matter.

Injuries are almost always mostly just bad luck, and I hope Mahle's recovery is complete and rapid. Regarding his future with the Twins, I'm sure it will be a difficult decision for Falvine. He has been a good enough pitcher to merit a spot in the rotation, but even if he had stayed healthy it was not certain we'd have had room for him next season depending on how much our starting pitching prospects progress this season. And depending on Sonny Gray. It's a gamble to keep Mahle and it's a gamble to let him go. I just hope our front office makes the best educated guess.

Offer him 3 years, $15M.  If he balks, he walks.  Tough to get a good contract at his age and his injury history, now undergoing TJS.  Not trying to be harsh, but that would be a fair sharing of risk for both parties.

Turns out to be a HORRIBLE trade by the FO.  10 starts over 2 seasons for 3 legit, good prospects/players. Yikes.

I can’t imagine paying him more than $5M to rehab in ‘24 and something around $10M per year for 2 more years with some easily attained incentives that can make him interested - but we can’t tie up $15M per year if he’s not pitching and at least .500. He’s not that good & good money after bad doesn’t seem wise.

Seems like a wasteful move with Mahle the more I consider.

Gray, 2 years, for $23M per year. He pairs with Lopez - Ryan - Ober - Varland …..with Paddack competing with all 5 guys - still need depth going forward!

When Gray is done at end of ‘25 we’ll have money for Ryan…..going to be paying Duran by then as well.

Sorry, should have been more clear.

3 years, $5M per year, $15M total.  Hell no, not offering $15M per year.

As for incentives, sure.  All Star, certain number of starts, ERA, WAR, whatever floats their boat.  Any team would be happy to pay well-earned incentive bonuses.

I don't see how you regret making a deal like this. You always have to give up something to get something, and arguably Steer and CES don't have a place on this roster

We gave up 2 legit prospects for a guy that will ending up pitching like 10 games for us.  The FO better regret making deals that turn out poorly.  Otherwise what's the point?

Also, if the worst hitting team in baseball can't find room for better hitters....yeesh.
