I just looked at who the Twins have going for their minor league teams. It should be fun to see how all four starters do.

What's the real story on Duffy and Baxendale? Are they just eating up the league or do these guys have actual major league potential? Because I don't know.

Short answer: I don't think we'll really know until AA. I can't speak to their actual repertoire and what they're throwing, but based purely on the competition, there are too many players in the lower levels that have no shot at the majors to make that call.

FWIW, both of these guys were college draftees in last year's draft (and I think they were both relievers). I'd expect both to flourish against A/A+ competition at this stage in the game. Both are 22 this season.

 

Baxendale is obviously doing this against better competition, so in terms of prospects, I hold out a bit more hope for him, but as someone else says, it all means nothing until they hit AA. I think the Twins will be more aggressive with these guys, as they will both see promotions in the near future.

 

Worst case, they become part of a power bull pen for the next wave, which is hardly a bad thing. Best case, they turn into useful starters.

Duffey was a relief pitcher while Baxendale was a starter.

I think Sickels called Baxendale a C+ sleeper prospect. He doesn't throw hard but is smart and has good control. Basically, your prototypical "Twins pitcher" typeset.
