Correia: Giving credit where it is due

BTW... Why are using the crabby looking chick avatar. We won yesterday... You need something appropriate for a win... Drag that girl out after losses only.

After I repurposed the Sunshine avatar for KC starts only, I decided that McKayla Maroney captures my attitude most days. The Bad Idea lady you are referring to seems best in small doses; I left her there overnight FTW (literally) but my doctor is concerned about too much stress on my heart.

To me, it was all about the Burton.

I don't know if we have direct information about that, but yes, that's the subtext I think is there too, that Burton was "meh" for that first night and they really had no better bridge to Perkins for the 9th than to roll with Correia, and last night Burton was Go. It's a compliment to KC to pitch the 7th, not a negative to turn it over to the bullpen in the 8th.

The reason that Correia went out for the 8th in his last outing was because he was dominating and his pitch count was in the low 80's. Last night he was taken out after 7 with a pitch count of 102.

yeah, that's why I wrote: 'What I'm curious about is why Gardy would leave him in with a 1 run lead, but pull him with a 3 run lead? I'm hoping it's just about pitch count, and I hope that was the reason, because if not then it's baffling to me. '

See, I mentioned pitch count.

To expand on that, I thought it was the right move to pull him last night as well, regardless of pitch count. So, in both situations, I figured it was the right move. I thought it was right this time, for the same reasons it was right the other time. What I'm curious about is why Gardy would leave him in with a 1 run lead, but pull him with a 3 run lead? I'm hoping it's just about pitch count, and I hope that was the reason, because if not then it's baffling to me.

My feeling is that #1 it was about pitch count. KC had 84 through 7 the previous game and 101 yesterday. At 84, it's reasonable that he can get through the 8th and be around 100. I doubt Gardy allows him (or any pitcher) much past that right now. The fact that Burton was unavailable probably has something to do with it also, but we don't need to get back into that discussion.

But was he unavailable...cause he came in...at this point it was just comparing the two situations. I would have loved it if he was at the same amount of pitches to see what Gardy would have done...

anyway, it was never my point to rehash that debate...

Sorry, I meant he was unavailable last time.

Three things he's doing now that he hasn't always done: He's mixing up his pitches well, he's moving his pitches in and out and he's keeping the sinker down. If he can keep this up, he'll give us the innings we need.

One moment from last night's game gave me particular joy. The hitter was Bourgos. Harris was on second after the Arcia error. Two outs. He got 0-2 on fastballs over the inside and outside corners. Then he threw a slider on the outside corner, which Bourgos was looking for and fouled off. Joe went to the mound and had a long chat with him. When Joe got back into his crouch, Correia threw two four seamers as hard as he could above the letters. Bourgos didn't bite. His last pitch of the night (#102) was the same slider on the outside corner (maybe a touch more outside than the first one), which Bourgos swung and missed for the final out of the 7th. Clearly Joe told him how to set up the hitter and get the strikeout. I doubt he's had a catcher with that particular ability in some time.

When I watched it on TV (live) it started inner-half, and finished right-down-the-middle, but low.

I'm getting a good chuckle out of how Slowey begins the year with a few good starts at it's "OMG! WE GAVE UP ON THE NEXT ROY HALLADAY!", but Correia does the same and it's "Meh, he'll suck the rest of the year."

Kwak, I was looking at Gameday while watching TV. Gameday uses a Pitch F/X like system to determine location.

You have to go over to the other thread. It's amazing.

I like the crabby woman. Crabby women are challenging but can be a whole lot of fun if you can find their sweet spots. Plus, she is a gymnast, which seems like a very good thing. That said, I like the blond goddess the best, even though she was ineffective against the Mets.

You don't ask much for your $4.5M this year, do you? Just better than league-average ERA for 200 innings? And since his salary bumps to $5.5M next year, that should dictate further improvement to <4.00 I suppose.

?

I expect him to be better than Livan, Marquis, Ortiz, Ponson and the rest of the retreads that the Twins have brought in. Is that too much? Correia would be worth his contract if he had a 4.50 ERA and I would be very happy if it was better than 4.25. Do you feel differently?

Yeah, my bad. I somehow misread what you wrote, to mean that this was the threshold for being happy with him and his princely two-year salary. Snark withdrawn.
