Rosterman Verified Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Hey, Michael Bowden is available ... again!
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Anyone feel any differently about Worley yet?I'm sure it was just a random lucky guess on my part... I'll venture to guess from the lack of serious responses that suddenly nobody is so eager to defend Worley's impressive "track record" at this point?

Either that or no one wants to explain the concept of "idiot luck" to you. But cool story otherwise, bro.

kab21 Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 As of now I will give Worley a mulligan for a couple of months. He had minor elbow surgery this winter and stuff like this is always a risk. Hopefully this doesn't turn into a lost season for him and another surgery (minor or major) but I think he will be a solid starter again.

Whiplash from spinning around to watch all the laser beams hit off him? In all seriousness, though, have you considered that maybe Worley just isnt any good? When do teams trade good, cost controlled young pitchers? Pretty much never, let alone for players who are serviceable, but have a pretty low ceiling (Revere). Worley's numbers in the NL were fluky, driven by a unsustainable fluky K looking rate that MLB hitters were guaranteed to adjust to.Philidelphia knew it, and they sold while they still could.
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 And I think Terry Ryan knew it too, which is why Trevor May was included.

Your analysis in this thread is very poor imo. It's not that uncommon for pitchers to need a 2nd surgery to remove bone chips or scar tissue. Sometimes this even becomes TJ (Baker IIRC). Yes, it's not that common that teams trade young, good pitchers but most teams don't have a rotation with Halladay, Lee, Hamels and other cheap, decent backend options. His numbers in the NL were fluky but there is no way that he is this bad. Something else is happening and it would not surprise me if something isn't right with elbow. Not every pitcher comes back 100% right away even though it's a relatively minor surgery.

I agree that he's probably not THIS bad, that would be pretty hard to sustain for anyone. But I don't think he's very good at all.I think he's probably a 5th starter on a poor team, and not on a playoff team's rotation. He's probably right around Nick Blackburn territory, IMO. I've yet to hear any suggestion of an injury, so I don't know why you are speculating on that. But, I guess in all fairness, considering the Twins medical history, I must say I wouldnt' be shocked if he had an injury and the Twins just didn't know it.
kab21 Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 I am speculating on that because it's one of those things that can happen after you have surgery. you are acting like you haven't heard of this before.

Just because it can happen, doesn't mean it has happened. If he has an injury he should be on the DL. I'm not sure how pitching in AAA is going to heal his injury.
kab21 Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Even if there isn't an injury it still takes time to loosen up an area that recently had surgery.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Even if there isn't an injury it still takes time to loosen up an area that recently had surgery. The surgery was almost 9 months ago, good grief. This was bone spurs, not Tommy John.
kab21 Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 The surgery was almost 9 months ago, good grief. This was bone spurs, not Tommy John. That's how it works. Pitchers delay this kind of surgery until the offseason all of the time and it's not uncommon that pitchers complain about scar tissue the next year. They don't really know it's an issue until they are going at full intensity and pitching on a normal schedule. Sometimes they need a 2nd surgery. I'm still not sure why this is such a surprise to you.

drjim Provisional Member Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 Worley has 0 swing and misses on around 50 curveballs this year. That tells me is stuff is not as sharp and my initial thought goes back to the offseason surgery (and that he is probably a little out of shape). Brooks I have no idea what great analysis you provided on Worley earlier in the thread, but I generally saw him as a back of the rotation starter along with Diamond. That and a prospect is about what you should expect for Revere.

IMO, we have plenty of back of the rotation candidates, I don't really think we needed another one. I'd rather have kept Revere over a replacement level pitcher.

Worley is at worst a placeholder. Given his minor league track record, it's quite possible we develop something out of him... It isn't like he's holding back the next Johan Santana here.

For all this talk about Ryan needing to sell high on prospects, that's pretty much what he did with Revere. I'll be surprised if Revere ever gets a season where his OPS tops out well over .700. I get that there's GG defense in center, but his bat (and arm) don't play well. He's a 4th OF that Ryan managed to spin into a decent pitching prospect and a back of the rotation arm.
