Butera, Duensing File for Arbitration

Today, LHP Brian Duensing and C Drew Butera were among 133 MLB players who filed for free agency.

 

Duensing could get between $1.5M and $2.0M.

 

Butera will likely get somewhere between $0.6M and $0.8M.

I realize that the numbers you present are not the amounts submitted by the respective sides, but ... I can understand why someone like Drew Butera might feel compelled to fight for an extra $100,000 or so he is not being offered by the team, but I can't quite understand why the team would fight for that same amount. If the Twins were to have gone ahead and given Drew what he wanted, will Kevin Correia notice and resolve that next time he negotiates for a two-year contract with the soft-touch Twins he'll remember to hold out for $10,100,000? Or mightn't the big-money guys notice and nod in appreciation that the bit-players are treated like they matter?

The team fighting for an extra 100k isn't what's troubling, it's that the opportunity to fight is even there in the first place. He should have been released and offered a minor league contract with a spring training invite long ago. That they continue to allow him to eat up a 40-man spot and draw a guaranteed major league salary is baffling.

Clean yes/no bet this year: Butera will make an appearance as a pitcher this season. I'll say no, but not a firm no.

It wasn't my point to debate whether Butera ought to be on the Twins' (or anyone's) roster. But given that he is, and has a certain amount of service time, he will be paid something, and he can go to arbitration. The question is why nickel and dime the few guys who have this amount of leverage but still will come in under $1M? Isn't it better to be known as a franchise players will want to come to?

They aren't nickel and dimeing Duensing and Butera. Since they are only signing them to 1 year deals, they just haven't negotiated with them as there has been no need to yet. I don't believe the Twins' have submitted their offers yet for arbitration. I'm willing to bet that both players will be signed long before their arbitration hearings come up.

 

The only Arb. player the Twins dealt with was Burton and the only reason they did that early was because the gave him a multiyear deal.
