Berrios vs Parker

What "type of thing" did Berardino do, exactly? Shouldn't he follow up on potential stories?

Escalate a non-story.

Sure he should follow-up on "potential stories," but that's not what happened here. Did he ask Parker to clarify? Doesn't look like it, so he DIDN'T follow up on the "story" being discussed. It wasn't an accusation (in my opinion) until he made it into one.

I think what Parker did was actually pretty cool. He found some interesting images and videos and shared them, possibly giving everyone an insight into baseball that is rarely provided. Criticizing him as if he committed treason just because you don't like the information seems like complaining about not respecting the RBI as a time-tested measure of stardom. I hope Parker continues to share all of his analyses with us, on an unfiltered basis.

Then it went into the news - even Keith Law picked up on it. It would have been professional negligence for beat writers not to pursue the story. One of my last worries in life is whether sportswriters are careful enough with their language not to hurt the feelings of pro athletes. I think most pro athletes don't really care, either.

Beradino isn't making this up out of thin error. Accusation or not, when you are taking video, zooming in on "spots" on cap and pointing out what berrios is do in between pitching it's pretty clear what you are "saying" between the lines. It was heavily implied that Berrios MIGHT be cheating. I'm not saying Parker is wrong for looking into it, just that he prob owes an apology to Jose now that it's clear Berrios wasn't cheating.

Beradino followed up on it because there was interest.

If Parker (big fan of his work, by the way) thought it was a non story, he wouldn't have twittered about it, so I disagree.

That could be fair point. I applaud the awareness that goes into noticing something like that.

I was hoping the story was how well he pitched this go-round (I was up north this weekend so catching up on this today). Instead, I see this and go read what Parker said and I just don't agree that it was accusatory until Berardino made it so.

La Velle also touched on it, and I think framed the topic better.

Agree! Berrios just has a nervous tic like many other players, but who knew that brand new ballcaps stain that easily.

A few years ago, some fan made an internet video about how Joe Mauer was stealing signs from the Tigers and showed, as an example, an at-bat against Jason Kubel. It was great and both newspapers covered it and got quotes from the players (they all denied that the Twins steal signs while the Tigers catcher said the Twins were sorta known for that). (The NYTimes ending up reporting on the story, as well.  https://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/01/joe-mauer-and-tipping-pitches/?_r=0)

So that's a long winded way of saying I'm not sure the papers covering this tweet isn't that unusual. It's a story in the middle of May. Seems like a real story to me.

It's one thing to pursue the story.  It's another to get it right.  There was an observation and no accusation.  Now there's an accusation, because pursuing the story entails generating clicks.... and getting it right does not.
