With about a month left in the regular season, I thought it would be a good time to discuss the award races in the MLB, and there are some interesting ones.

I'll start with my picks for the AL:

MVP: Jose Altuve

Cy Young: Cole Hamels - A case can be made for Zach Britton too

ROY: Michael Fulmer - Fulmer has struggled a little lately. Could open the door for Naquin or Kepler... or Gary Sanchez (smh)

And for the NL:

MVP: Kris Bryant

Cy Young: Madison Bumgarner - A close second for me is Max Sherzer

ROY: Corey Seager - This is an easy one, but I would've liked to have seen the numbers Trevor Story could have put up.

Thoughts?

Well, Trout is still the best player so he could/maybe should win it.  Betts is having a great season for Boston as well.  And Donaldson is even better than last year we he won it.  I'd probably have those three ahead of Altuve, in some order.  But Altuve's a pretty interesting/fun pick, too.

The AL MVP race is going to be fun. Altuve with his video game like numbers. Donaldson, Trout, and Betts in the mix. I'm rooting for Altuve personally.

NL MVP: Pick your poison from the Cubs. Bryant or Rizzo.

AL CY: Kluber

AL ROY: Fullmer

NL MVP: Bryant

NL CY: Jose Fernandez (unless Kershaw comes back real soon);

ROY: Seager (easiest pick).

P.S.  It's been fun to see the Verlander of old (or at least very close to it).

I think you guys are selling Arenado short, especially with the national love he's finally getting. It's as if owners didn't realize he existed before last season, but he's been phenomenal this year, and he's getting a lot of mention when national guys are talking about NL MVP.

I might be the biggest Arenado fan on this site, with the Rockies being my 2nd favorite team.  I'd still go with Bryant.  My #2 would be Seager, actually.

AL MVP:  I think Ortiz could be up there because he is having a great season at the plate and it is his last season.  But my guess is Trout or Altuve.

NL MVP: Bryant

I'd probably have Arenado 2nd or 3rd, along with Daniel Murphy.

Arenado and Bryant have pretty similar numbers, and the Coors effect gives Bryant the advantage I think.

Thing is that Arenado has been playing other-worldly defense this year. Fangraphs' WAR really kills Arenado for park effects when Bryant plays at a bandbox as well, which I just don't understand. What is crazy to me is this - their numbers are near mirror images of one another in the traditional roto stats and slash line stats, but Bryant has a .344 BABIP while Arenado is actually slightly UNLUCKY compared to his career BABIP this year with a .275. Add in that while they walk at the same rate, Arenado strikes out 10% less than Bryant, and he's to me a far better hitter. He'll have my vote in IBWAA if the election was right now.

Bryant has a wRC+ of 160, Arenado is at 124.  Bryant has him in each part of the slashline and Bryant can  play/has played multiple positions well, which has value.

Again, I'm more of a fan of Arenado than Bryant, and would love if he got MVP, but Holliday lost out to Rollins for goodness sakes and Tulo never won one, so I doubt we're going to see a Rockies MVP any time soon.

Which is 100% park factor BS.

Is it?  Bryant leads him in BA, OBP and slg% too.  Has him in OPS by 49 points.

In any event, I think one has to take into account home park too. Coors Field is the #1 offensive park with Wrigley being 25th.(park factors).  And that's 25th WITH having a great offensive team playing their home games there.

Arenado has an astonishing +.217 OPS split at home. Bryant is actually OPS'ing. 154 WORSE in his home Park.

The Coors Field effect is legit.

I never said it wasn't. However, he'd be a legit 4+ WAR player right now with his defense and his road numbers.
