Oh, they got off light, no doubt.....not losing a first rounder is ridiculous. But there is no evidence of harm to the Astros, that I know of.....

I think it's a huge hit on the Cards and a very nice get for the Astros. According to what I just heard on MLB Now, the top 100 picks is where a huge chunk of talent comes from and the Astros get two more (have five total). Those two picks plus 2M.

I do wonder if the Cards saw the penalty coming and that's why they were willing to give up the draft pick to sign Fowler.  They would have lost it anyway.

Absolutely. That's why many have said that you penalize their next two drafts - give the Astros picks this year, and remove picks next year.

I think the penalty is fine, especially when it was shown it was a one man thing and that one many is spending 4 years in jail.

Um, that's not exactly true. The org knew it happened and never once self-reported, even after being asked by MLB about a possible issue, they denied knowledge. Correa produced evidence of emails he sent to upper level Cardinals brass immediately after cracking into the Astros information with multiple files attached that were all opened, via "read" receipts he posted on the documents themselves and had the emails to verify.

Did he do the hacking independently? Most likely, yes. However, did the Cardinals upper level brass both 1) have the information he acquired, and 2) lie about both having the information and that they had any knowledge of his activities? Absolutely, and that was shown in court.

The Garnett bit makes me sad panda. Of course, I've always said that Malik Sealy passing was the nail in the coffin of Garnett leaving Minnesota. I think he would have fought through in spite, but there was just too much still present there with memories of a friend so fresh.

This might also might help explain why there never seems to be much talk about other teams hiring Cardinals front office personnel despite the team being perhaps this centuries most consistently competitive team.

Where did you hear this?  This is a direct quote from the story on MLB.COM

"Major League Baseball's investigators interviewed dozens of witnesses, examined thousands of documents and did a forensic search of both teams' computer systems, and were convinced that the case began and ended with Correa."

It was published by Jeff Passan on his Twitter feed as publicly available court transcripts. The actual documents are unable to be viewed as blocked evidence, but they are logged as evidence in the case against Correa, and the emails indicating he sent them and they were read by Cardinals officials were also admitted.

There is no evidence that the Cardinals did anything with the information, however, they did have it. There's not a way to deny they saw it and knew he had done it.

Yeah, everything I've read said no one else was involved (from what I've read, Manfred said the same thing) but I have better things to debate than this.  For me, regardless, I'm fine with the punishments. the teams that should be mad are the other teams in the Astros division, that just saw their division competition get more draft picks,

MLB also was not allowed to see any of the documents in the court case due to the protection of the court case and Correa and his lawyer refused to release the emails and such to them. The court testimony, however, was unsealed.

Also, this is a little bit of BS in the fact that the other 14 AL teams also get penalized in so far that the Astros gain two picks at the expense of a NL team.

I wish the Twins got hacked and the other team caught....

The Cardinals got the direct benefit of the hacking, but any harm the Astros suffered would have also been an indirect benefit for the Astros competitors in the AL.

It is hard to judge from here, but I wouldn't be surprised if MLB made that determination. Remember the Cardinals weren't just getting info to help themselves, there was some intent to hurt/punish the Astros too (remember that leak of documents?).
